Buried Future (madison Wisconsin U.s.)If the listener is willing to pay attention, and not get discouraged after hearing the dizzying blasting, the music m a k e s a l o t o f s e n s ea n d t h a t ' s w h e n t h i n g s g e t f u n : w h e n t h e chaos and different elements come together and things become clearer. There is here basically none of the main elements that some expect (singing, melody, rhythms and riffs that are easy to remember). What I mean by this is that you can't have countries without having war, becausecompetition always follows division. You can observe this at every level: Capitalism vs. Communism, U.S. vs. Iraq, Yankee vs. Dixie, Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings. All of these conflicts exist because both groups considertheir ideology to be superior, and they want to impose their "superior" ideology on the "inferior" group, causing that group to submit and recognize them to be superior. That's never going to happen. So the way I see it, we can keep beating our heads against the wall to try and make everyone think like we do, or we can try to understand why o t h e r p e o p l et h i n k d i f f e r e n t l y .A t t h i s p o i n t , I d o n ' t h a v e t o t e l l you option. what I is bqtter th ink the I also want to clarify one last thing about that song, which is that while it is about the U.S. insofar as I'm an American, it's really a more general criticism of every country's n a t i o n a l i s m .T h e l i n e s y o u q u o t e i n y o u r q u e s t i o n a r e t h i n g s that are true for almost every person in almost every country. Everyone is told that their country is the greatest country on earth, and that everyone else is an infidel/demon/heathen whose fellow countrymen are unethical bastardsthat would let him starve. That's what makes the whole situation so ridiculous. Every country can't possibly be the greatest country on earth, just like every religion can't possibly be the one true path to salvation. To think so is delusional at best, worst. m ur d e ro u s at and Do you think that people who say that vour vocals are "monotonous" are reallv listening to the sonos? Is this legitimate? or for intelliqibility credible demand ANDY: Certainlythe vocal issue is one of the more common c r i t i c i s m s .F r i e n d sw h o h e a r u s t e l l u s o f t e n t h a t t h e y l i k e t h e music a lot, but can't stand the vocals. Personally,I find it very strange that they even make that distinction, because to us, the vocals and the music aren't separable elements. The vocals are a part of the music as much as any of the instruments. The death growl is less of a set paradigm so much as a break from the set paradigm of what constitutesa song. Most people are conditioned to think of a song as something that they can sing along with, and they generally expect the vocal track to be presented as the most important part of a tune. Death metal rejects that idea, in favor of bringing the vocals into the mix as a rhythmic element. The vocalist doesn't sing so much as he plays. Though I will say this: It seems like a cruel joke that we have a writer of Dave's caliber who puts together extremely well constructed lyrics about very thought provoking subjects, that nobody can really understand without a set of liner notes in front of them. Moreover, when people tell us that the music is great but the vocals are crap, they're likely iust trying to be nice. It's hard to imagine the people who have said that sitting around l i s t e n i n gt o i n s t r u m e n t a ld e a t h m e t a l a n d t h i n k i n g t h a t i t ' s j u s t the bee's knees. The vocal track is just a default complaint from people who are used to listening for the vocals in particular. If we didn't have Dave, it's not like they wouldn't find anything else to complain about. "Oh, it's just too fast", or "it sounds so angry", or "what the hell is going on? How many beats was that?" In the end it doesn't really matter' We're not doing this to please everyone, and the people who get that. who ones the are like us really BOBBY: What people don't understand about technical death metal is that, unlike most pop-metal bands and other forms of mainstream music in general, the music is focused around the whole band as opposed as the band being there to serve the vocals. The vocals in death metal are there to add to

the intensity of the overall sound, just as the guitars and drums are. You don't really have the option to "sing" over music that is atonal, asymmetrical, and that rapidly changing. The lower guttural vocals go great as a boosting rhythmic instrument with the rest of the music, not to mention how evil they sound help heighten the mood. So you can call them about as "monotonous" as any other instrument in the band What do you look for in a guitar solo? Also, how much i m p r o v i s a t i o ni s t h e r e l i v e ? Nefandus (sweoentNefandus'music carries a vision that, it seems, maybe could be summed up as: keep metal black/death in atmosphereand feel, as there is a strong, twisted, raw, somber feel, resulting i n i m a g i n a t i v ey e t v e r y c a u s t i c m u s i c . However, in addition to the fact that this is raw and twisted, what gives Nefandus its identity, besidesthat black metal foundation, is the way the music builds and uses variety in different vocals: there is lots of throat-burning black metal vocals and done well, includingthe more sickening/disgusting moments. That's one major thing. Another one: there is additional atmosphere created through what I will here call chanting/singing,but it's loud and projected, not whispered' The result is an atmosphericvocal feel. "Death Holy Death" is the name of the album and it is serious quality, creative black metal with a good, solid, unpolished production. It's improbable that your path and Nefandus'path will be crossing often in the future, so might want to investigate this music for yourself' In addition, Nefandus is related to other bands (mentioned in this interview)that also have particularmusical perspectives' Kristoffer "Ushatar" Andersson - Lead Guitars, Bass Belfagor V o c a l s ,G u i t a r , B a s s , D r u m s questions here. these Belfagor answered i . w w w . n e f a n d u s o r g o r m . b e l f a g o r @ h o t m al .c o m Who olavs the drums, guitars and bass? Belfagor is credited with "all vocals" and "all instruments" on tracks 1-5. Does that mean that Ushatar does not play anything, except for songs 7 and 8? Do vou use a drum machine?

I play all instruments on mentioned songs, yes, as well as I peform all vocals on the entire album. yes, this means that Ushatar plays no single instrument on songs 1-5, and on tracks 7 and 8, I play only the drums, while Ushatar handles the rest of the instruments. I would never use a drum machine on any of my musical projects. You cannot capture that same magical vibe that can be captured with human hands. I see recording with your instruments as a kind of ritualisticprocedure, as is the creation of a song, which also occurs while holding and playing an instrument, until you reach the state of trance required for the qliphothic forces to begin to flow out into manifestation through you and the instrument you are using. This is of course true only for the musicianwho works with the anti-worlds of qlifhoth magically as well as musically. Do you have plansto tour? Is that a goal? No. We are both busy with our main bands, myself with Ofermod and Ushatar with SargatanasReign and The Legion, that we have no time to plan too much when it comes to N e f a n d u s .W e g o i n t o t h e s t u d i o a n d c r e a t e s o m e D e a t h M e t a l magic, and what comes after that simply comes. What do you mean bv "Qliphothic"? The Qliphoth are the opposing counterparts to the Sephiroth, which in the Qabalah, a Hebrew system of mysticism and magic, are the emanations of all life, from the loftiest of heavenly heights to the grossest of matter. The eliphoth are the anti-words where all demonic forces have their i n h a b i t a n c ea n d a r e u s e f u l s y m b o l s i n t h e d a r k m a g i c o f t h e Left Hand path. They are not directed at anything outer, but are invocations to the mighty forces of Sitra Ahra and sometimes poetical storys about them, often with profound mystic meaning. My words are between the demonic forces and myself, and if the listener finds them stimulating, then maybe he is worthy of the entire Nefandus experience.

We love metal and punk and go to the shows, whether it's at a bar or in a basement, and hang out with the people that love doing that too. It's been a great experience for all of us in Upon Extinction. I think a way to help the scene for bands is that when they ask another band for a show to return the favor. It shows that you have respect for the metal scene and are willing to help out bands. I get too many requests for shows, but bands don't return the favor. It's not required, but if you 6

It's history about the dahomey wars, the enslavement from muslim africans and the grand kingdom that was the oyo kingdom. Ok, mostly fact. The factual part is that in medieval times and before, West Africa had the largest kingdom on the continent, mainly becausethe prime resource was gold. This attracted muslim arabs, 300 years later, which in turn enslavedthe blacks for their gold and then started the trans atlantic slave with the europeans. Gage: Life and Death was my first forray into writing an entire Erebus song. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out - it's much darker than other Erebus songs, and it has a sort of tech deathy feel to it. I find this one a lot of fun to play because it's challenging and catchy at the same time. The Great Satan is another more death-metal oriented song. It also dabbles into doom metal with the brooding opening and carries a harmonic dark minor feel throughout. So. how many new songs have you recorded then? Is there you'd other info like about that? share Dave: We have recordedthree new songs, Hegemon, Life and Death in the Land of Hope, and Good for Nothing. Since we were only able to record three songs, we chose these three because they really demonstrated the versatiliiy and genrehopping madness that Erebus brings to the table. Our hope is that record companies hear Life and Death, say to themselves "Oh, ok, another tech death band," and then BAM!They hear G o o d f o r N o t h i n g a n d c o m e t o t h e i m m e d i a t e r e a l i z a t i o nt h a t i t s o u n d s p r a c t i c a l l yn o t h i n g l i k e t h e f i r s t s o n g . Few bands bring that diversity to the table, and we hope it will be our selling point. You tend to make people want to mosh. Maybe it's the "hammer of Erebus" vour vocalist Dave Frazer waves and swings about. At anv rate, how's your music received in Illinois or Minnesota or other places you have played? Dave: Haha, well that is certainly our intent. We stafted off playing basement shows for all ages crowds all around the s t a t e , w h i c h r e a l l y g a v e u s o u r s t y l e o f e n c o u r a g i n gt h e c r o w d and involvingthem in our shows. As we have played around, we have played for more older crowds, and have found that that style isn't always appreciated(such as the time I jumped on a table, spillingdrinks all over a patron, or when I dumped a n a s h t r a y o n a t a b l e f u l l o f n o n p a r t i c i p a t o r s ) ,b u t w e s t i l l stay true to our roots and never hold back when it comes to a performance. Either way, everywhere we play we get some people who don't like the in your face style, others that get totally into it, and that's great for us. That way all the scene kids and bar flies make room for all the real metal heads to enloy the show!! Gage: Yeah, I don't think I've seen us do a show without someone moshing. People seem to enjoy it the same pretty much everywhere (especially when there's beer involved). What do you think the metal public can do to support metal m u s i c i n W i s c o n s i ni n g e n e r a l ? Gage: Going to shows is an obvious one. sceneoverallcold be improved if bands were able to unite and work together to build a scene. There is too much cutthroat competition and rivalry in the scene, at times it seems like bands have'turf'that they don't allow other bands to encroach upon. The Loft is a great example - Erebus has never been allowedto play there due to our 'bar band' image. Dave: The WMA is a forum that brings metal heads from all around the state together to support their favorite independentWisconsin bands. With both bant members (all members of Erebus frequently post on the forums) and fans combined, the Alliance is a great way to network, meet people, build bands and just hang out and talk about metal. Can you explain the storiesor ideas behind the songs"The Old Corpse Road," "The Wild Hunt." and the Oakmen of Naddle Forest"? Each track is told from a different perspective, be it personal or third person etc. The Old Corpse Road was inspired by a corpse road in the UK Lake District, more specifically Haweswater. The song tells of lengthy trail people used to walk when carrying coffins to a cemetery. The legends tell that these roads led over harsh terrain and were haunted by f ai r i e s and spir it s. The Wild Hunt is told in the first person perspective. The story is about a man who is subjected to the terror of a fabled hunt known throughout Europe in many differentforms. In our take of the story a traveller is swept up and then becomes part of the hunt itself looking to claim more innocent souls. The Oakmen of Naddle Forest is told from a storyteller's point of view. The story is an amalgamation of two ideas. Oakmen are legendary creatures thought to haunt bluebell woods in nodhern England and be protective of oak trees. Naddle Forest is a woodland in the vicinity of Haweswater (home to the Old Corpse Road) famed for its oak trees and bluebells. The story is told as though speaking to a group round a camp fire and serves as warning to beware of the protectors forest. Old Corose Road ru.r.tMy impression of their recording "The Echoes of Tales Once Told" is that Old Corpse Road has a lot of musical ideas that they implement in their blasting and atmospheric black metal. They, of course, do lots of blasting, frenzied music, but they also include other elements to balance things out with a feel/mood of spoken word and narratives. In this manner the band creates an imaginative type of black metal based on myths, histories, stories and traditions akin to those. The music is already very developed, as are the lyrical concepts, ll

Yes, the vocals on the recording are reproduced by the same members in the practiceenvironment. The Revenantand The Bearer share equal amounts of the main vocals, whilst The Wanderer provides narrative. All of the aforementioned and additionally keyboardistThe Watcher all provide clean vocal harmonies both on recording and in practice.
