what is this exhibition about?

the subject of the exhibition is about this notion of visually representing a subjective

experience of space. for this we have surveyed two spaces in london, a studio apartment

and the gallery space we are exhibiting in. This survey is composed of film, film editing,

drawings representing objective and subjective views, an musical interpretation and

this small, descriptive zine. the exhibition’s substance is an effort by s.m.a.c. to continue

threads of research in architecture beyond academic institutions

event 1. the gallery opening, where we’ll be introducing the exhibition with a live

performance by sound architect Vincent Oliver.

event 2. special guest speaker architect Dr Lorens Holm is going to lead an exploratory

thinking last night about a film we could make...kinda in the same vein as the joiner montages we made for the previous motion picture.

...about the creation of new architecture and spatial experiences out of existing urban/non urban landscapes?

we’ve scored the gallery space for something like a month beginning in february!

i had a great 3 hour long chinwag and pitch with these two good guys who run a small gallery space down redchurch street, luke and bradley. i pitched the basic premise of an installation piece, based on our rolling discussions over the last month or so, and our thesis research.

the idea i spoke of [and we all got rather excited by] is a simplified version of the ideas you and i were discussing before and so we’ll have to agree on that - but i think they genuinely enjoyed the ideas behind it!

yes, i would be honoured to support you in your endeavours, if you think i am the right person to discuss your work. it is good to see that you are productive.

as with all things, it is the dates...at the moment, in february, i have to be in dundee: at some time in the first week but i am not sure yet when (for another exhibition)wednesday 09wednesday 16wednesday 23these dates will probably fill up fast.

sean and myself have been chatting with luke and bradley recently about a proposal for an exhibit in the gallery space in lo records [i think you know the space]

for this installation we propose two objects and a short film. it is essentially going to be a piece of research exploring our relationship with the space we are in and how it is perceived.

so to cut to the chase, would you be interested in designing the audio to accompany the film, to create a more immersive environment when watching the film?

meta architecture is the title of our new work. it will explore themes that we were researching into in our 5th year. [remember the video we made?]

we want the event to have two nights; the opening night and a night where we invite a guest speaker to give a talk and have a discussion afterwords.

our question to you is firstly, would you like to do it? your book has influenced our work and it makes sense to ask you. . . you could plug your book too!

we thought being objective would be the most telling counterpart to our representations of an experience of space.

we found we couldn’t do that; we could only represent objectivity, not achieve it

between the technical limits of the cameras’ lens and an intuition that makes a space,these drawings analyse the [dis]joiners’ warped space, from through the lens.an appreciation of our visual field allows us to create an architecture of the self.’
