Messiah

VIsIONFriends

2009 will be a great Händel celebration year. What better place to celebrate his greatest masterpiece, the Messiah, than in the city of its premiere?

Bring your voices and your choirs to join us in a spectacular performance of the most exuberant, moving, triumphant and heartrending oratorio of them all.

I am very excited to be bringing choirs from the US, my adopted home, back to Ireland and then on to the country where I was brought up and from where I launched my career with The King’s Singers!

Please note that choirs can opt to sing Part 1 or Parts 2 & 3 and all choirs sing Hallelujah, Worthy is the Lamb & Amen.

Please consider joining us for this wonderful musical celebration.

LeaDerSIMON CARRINGTON is director of the Yale Schola Cantorum and professor of choral conducting at Yale University, where he has also led the introduction of a new graduate voice degree for singers specializing in oratorio, early music, art song, and chamber ensemble. From 2001 until his Yale appointment in 2003, he was director of choral activities at the New England Conservatory, and from 1994 to 2001 he held a similar position at the University of Kansas. Prior to coming to the United States, Professor Carrington was a creative force for twenty-five years with the internationally acclaimed British vocal ensemble The King’s Singers, which he co-founded at Cambridge University. He gave 3,000 performances at many of the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls, made more than seventy recordings, and appeared on countless television and radio programs including nine appearances on the Tonight Show with the late Johnny Carson! He maintains an active schedule as a freelance conductor and choral clinician, leading workshops and master classes all over the world. Most recently he has conducted combined choirs in the Monteverdi Vespers in Barcelona and the Fauré Requiem in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, and Dornoch Cathedral, Scotland, Beethoven’s Meeresstille with the Texas All State Choir, Händel’s Messiah in Kansas City and the Rachmaninov Vespers in Victoria BC with singers from all over Canada. He has conducted several times at the Monteverdi Choir Festival in Budapest and is a regular guest conductor at the Tokyo Cantat in Japan. He leads workshops every year at the Chamber Choir Festival in Sarteano (Italy), and the Yale summer festival in Norfolk, Connecticut. He has taken Yale Schola Cantorum to perform at the two major choral conventions in the US where they received standing ovations and his recordings with the choir of baroque masterpieces by Bach, Biber and Bertali have received rave reviews. In 2007 he gave the keynote address at the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors conference, presided over the international jury at the choral festival in Leipzig, Germany where he’ll return in 2008, and guest conducted the Camerata Vocale in Utrecht, Holland.

DesTINaTIONIreland is deservedly called the Emerald Isle. It is famous for its pastoral countryside, thatched cottages, pubs, music, humor, charming accent, distinctive villages, castles and a capital city steeped in history yet vibrating with youthful energy. Dublin boasts medieval, Georgian and modern architecture which provides the backdrop to a friendly city with a thriving cultural heritage. Dublin is justifiably proud to have been the setting for the first performance of Handel’s Messiah, on the 16th April 1742.

rePerTOIre THE MESSIAH I have conducted the Messiah in England, Hungary, Brazil, the US, and sundry other places round the world; with my college students, with professionals and with community choirs. I have sung the so-los and in the choruses and I have played double bass continuo for everyone from Benjamin Britten to John Eliot Gardiner and David Willcocks. Every time this amazing work comes up fresh, sizzling with glorious energy, colour and vibrancy.

Messiah is a masterpiece of which one can never tire and I look forward immensely to conducting again during the Händel 250th celebration year.

I had a wonderful experience with my ensemble, and credit Kingsway with outstanding concert venues as well as a beautifully organized tour. Dr. Nina Nash-Robertson, Director of Choral Activities Central Michigan University

From the planning of our itinerary to the flight home, Kingsway’s professionalism and first-class service made our tour of England and Ireland that “once-in-a-lifetime” experience I was hoping my students would get to enjoy . We performed at the best performance venues, had great food and hotel accommodations, and had the best itinerary with the friendliest and most informative tour guides, all for a price that was incredibly reasonable . After experiencing what the other agencies offer, there is no chance I will ever tour internationally with anyone other than Kingsway International!

Keith Hancock, Tesoro High School Choral Music/Guitar Las Flores, California

Our recent choral tour to Scotland was ‘State of the Art’ if this phrase can be used to describe our experience . Kingsway International and our European tour guides provided for every detail and more than what would normally be expected! Definitely a highlight of our choir’s life experiences that will never be forgotten!

Shawn P. Portell, Director of Music Ministries/Organist Webster Groves Presbyterian Church St. Louis, Missouri

I am completely satisfied that – with Kingsway – my ensembles will continue to experience the very best that performance touring can provide, outstanding service and attention to detail, incredible venues and audiences, appropriate balance of cultural exposure and free time and knowledgeable and confident guides.
