THE PRESERVICE PRAISE “Way Maker”

THE GREETING

THE OPENING MEDLEY “Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds” LSB 465

Today we are surrounded by special sights— the liturgical colors in the sanctuary, the various hues in the stain glass windows and perhaps the special notes of beauty added by floral decorations in the church. We are blessed in what we see in God’s creation and in the faces of loved ones. The hiddenness of Jesus was experienced by two disciples on the road to Emmaus. But ultimately, their eyes were opened, and they beheld the risen Savior. In worship, we seek to see Him as He chooses to be known to us.

“Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord”

THE INVOCATION

P: Christ being raised from the dead will never die again;

C: Death no longer has dominion over Him.

P: Christ has risen from the dead. Alleluia!

C: God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor,

P: He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands;

C: He has put all things under His feet. Alleluia! Alleluia!

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

P: Let us confess our sins to God our merciful Father.

C: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our creator and

preserver, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We are stained by

sin from our very beginnings. We have sinned again and again in

thought, word, and deed. We have not loved our neighbors as

ourselves and have turned away from one another in our thinking,

speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not

done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for all

of our many sins. Have mercy on us, gracious Father; forgive us all

that is past, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, direct our lives so

that we serve You in true faithfulness. Grant us victory over all that

oppresses us, and build Your kingdom among us here through Jesus

Christ, our Lord.

“The early Christian Church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14 P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23)

Chorus: Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, open the eyes of my heart,

I want to see You, I want to see You.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, open the eyes of my heart,

I want to see You, I want to see You.

To see You high and lifted up, shining in the light of Your glory,

Pour out Your power and love, as we sing “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Chorus

To see You high and lifted up, shining in the light of Your glory,

Pour out Your power and love, as we sing “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy we want to see You.

Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy we want to see You.

P: In His boundless mercy, God has promised forgiveness of sins to those

who repent and turn to Him for restoration and renewal. Therefore, as

a called servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. God keep you in His grace

by the Holy Spirit, and grant you a life on earth in which you tell of His

greatness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up the fallen

world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting

death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our

Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

C: Amen.

THE SONG OF PRAISE “Holy Water”

The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, the pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer.

God I'm on my knees again, God I'm begging please again

I need You. Oh I need You.

Walking down these desert roads, water for my thirsty soul

I need You. Oh I need You.

Chorus: Your forgiveness is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips,

Like the sound of a symphony to my ears,

Like holy water (on my skin).

Dead man walking, slave to sin I wanna know about being born again.

I need You. Oh God I need You.

So take me to the riverside, take me under baptize.

I need You. Oh God I need You. Chorus

I don't wanna abuse Your grace; God I need it ev'ry day.

It's the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change.

I don't wanna abuse Your grace; God I need it ev'ry day.

It's the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change.

I don't wanna abuse Your grace; God I need it ev'ry day.

It's the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change.

I don't wanna abuse Your grace; God I need it ev'ry day.

It's the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change. Chorus twice

THE FIRST LESSON Acts 2:36-41 36”Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has

made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37Now

when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and

the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38And Peter said to

them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus

Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the

Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you and for your children and for all

who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40And

with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them,

saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41So those who

received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about

three thousand souls.

THE EPISTLE LESSON 1 Peter 1:17-21 17If you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each

one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your

exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited

from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without

blemish or spot. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world

but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, 21who through

him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him

glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

THE GOSPEL VERSE

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 24:13-35

13That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus,

about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were

talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with

them. 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to

them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as

you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, named

The First Lesson today is taken from the New Testament, and is found on page 910 in the pew Bible. The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Peter’s letters. Today’s lesson is found on page 1014 in the pew Bible. The Gospel Verse may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. The Gospel Lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 885 in the pew Bible.

Yeah it’s like holy water on my skin-oh it’s like holy water.

Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does

not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19And he

said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of

Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God

and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up

to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third

day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women of our

company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and

when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even

seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who

were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said,

but him they did not see.” 25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and

slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not

necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his

glory?” 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to

them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28So they drew

near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going

farther, 29but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward

evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and

broke it and gave it to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each

other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road,

while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33And they rose that same hour and

returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were

with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and

has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they told what had happened on the road,

and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third

day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at

the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come

to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by confessing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith.

THE OFFERING ANTHEM “Love Like This”

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the Church, for all in need, and for the whole of God’s

creation. As our world has changed in a way that we never could have

imagined we wonder what Your plan is in the midst of the anxiety,

suffering, and death that surrounds us. We cry out to You for help. We

cry out to You to end this pandemic and strengthen our world for Your

purposes.

C: We pray for world leaders. Help them to work together during this

time to fight the coronavirus and it’s effects on families, businesses,

and the global economy. Help them to contain the virus and

eradicate it.

P: Give our nation’s leaders wisdom as well. Show them the steps they need

to take to fight this virus on a national level. Help them to stay strong

and healthy. Let their hands be Your hands at work. Move through them

and lead them into making right choices for our country.

C: Lord, in this time of anxiety, fear, and isolation, we come to You for

support, encouragement, and direction. We lay our worried minds

and troubled souls before You and in Your care. We pray for those

who have lost jobs, for those who have lost businesses or are

struggling to keep their companies going, that You would give them

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. Here the congregation, established and gathered by God according to His purpose, agrees together on earth that it may be done for them by the Father in heaven, as prayers, supplications, and thanksgivings are offered for all in authority and all sorts of human need. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please use them for your prayer time this week.

When I am a wasteland, You are the water.

When I am the winter, You are the fire that burns.

When I am a long night, You are the sunrise.

When I am a desert, You are the river that turns to find me.

Chorus: What have I done to deserve love like this?

What have I done to deserve love like this?

Your voice like a whisper, breaking the silence.

You say there's a treasure; You look 'til You find it.

You search to find me. Chorus

I cannot earn what You so freely give.

What have I done to deserve love like this?

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Chorus

I cannot earn what You so freely give.

What have I done to deserve love like this?

hope and meet their needs.

P: We ask for Your Spirit to be close to those who are afflicted and those

who have lost loved ones due to the coronavirus. We ask for that same

Spirit to be with them and us in uncertain times.

C: Great Physician, may Your hand be upon every doctor, nurse, and

health care worker as they care for the sick. Lift up and care for these

men and women risking and sometimes sacrificing their very lives for

the public good. Guard and defend them against every harm.

P: We pray for all who are struggling in this quarantine; for all who are

depressed, lonely, and afraid; for parents who are exhausted and children

who are restless. Give us all strength, creativity, and inspiration.

C: Help us to model Christ, who often retreated to quiet spaces to seek

solace and intercede on behalf of others. Give us insight into ways we

can celebrate community from a distance. Give us purpose and show

us how to use this time to honor You.

P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in

Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

C: Amen.

THE SILENT PRAYER

Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, who in giving Your only Son,

Jesus Christ, to accomplish our salvation have manifested Your grace and

glory. Give us lips to speak of Your glory and to tell of the power of our

Lord’s resurrection. Joined in the name of our Lord and bound together in

the communion of saints, we pray You to send Your Holy Spirit upon us to

sanctify and strengthen us in fervent love toward You and at peace with one

another. This we ask for the sake of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, who

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 & Luke 11:2-4) Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Numbers 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20)
