THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS P Let us confess our waywardness and sin in order that we may rise to newness of life

by faith, that we may be His own and live under Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness.

C O God, our Creator and Redeemer, hear our pleas for mercy. We have turned away from You and rebelled against You by going our own way. Because of our sin, we have discovered it is not good for us to be alone, without You. For the sake of the glory and honor of the salvation won for us in Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, forgive us and restore in us the image of Your own life and love. Amen.

P God offers all His treasure of justice, truth, and righteousness, His love is beyond all measure and as high as heaven above us. Since He has loved us, He puts our sins away. Therefore, in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

LUTHER’S EVENING PRAYER C I thank You, my Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that

You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray You to forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON Romans 7:1-13

Do you not know, brothers-for I am speaking to those who know the law-that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. 7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me?

Page 4: Messiah Lutheran Church We Welcome You to the Lord's House...God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of

By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. THE TRIPLE ALLELUIAS

THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 10:34-42 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

P This is the Gospel of our Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all

things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets, and I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE SERMON HYMN “Church of God, Elect and Glorious” LSB 646 Tune: LSB 700

THE SERMON THE RESPONSE “Church of God, Elect and Glorious”

THE OFFERING PRAYER THE OFFERING THE OFFERTORY “Give Thanks” LSB 806

Church of God, elect and glorious, holy nation, chosen race; Called as God’s own special people, royal priests and heirs of grace: Know the purpose of your calling, show to all His mighty deeds; Tell of love that knows no limits, grace that meets all human needs. God has called you out of darkness into His most marv’lous light; Brought His truth to life within you, turned your blindness into sight. Let your light so shine around you that God’s name is glorified And all find fresh hope and purpose in Christ Jesus crucified. Once you were an alien people, strangers to God’s heart of love; But He brought you home in mercy, citizens of heav’n above. Let His love flow out to others, let them feel a Father’s care; That they too may know His welcome and His countless blessings share.

Church of God, elect and holy, be the people He intends; Strong in faith and swift to answer, each command your Master sends: Royal priests, fulfill your calling through your sacrifice and prayer; Give your lives in joyful service, sing His praise, His love declare.

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son. Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son. And now let the weak say “I am strong,” Let the poor say “I am rich,” Because of what the Lord has done for us. And now let the weak say “I am strong,” Let the poor say “I am rich,” Because of what the Lord has done for us. Give thanks, give thanks.

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P O God, whose love we cannot measure, and whose blessings we cannot count

we bless and praise You for all Your goodness. In our weakness, You are our strength, in our darkness, You are light, in our sorrows, You bring comfort and peace. From everlasting to everlasting, You are our God.

C Ever-present Father, You have not left us without comfort and hope. Be with us in our isolation, close to us in our distancing, healing in our sickness, joy in our sadness, and wisdom in our confusion.

P You set all things in accordance to Your time. Remind us to wait on You, and find peace in Your plan even when we do not know what that is.

C Strengthen us during this time so as doors continue to open we may have the zeal of the early Christian Church to inhabit our communities and share Your goodness with the world around us. Give us a clear purpose to know what You would have us do.

P We pray for those whose purpose is to help care for the world. Give them skill, sympathy, resilience, and spare them from any illness. Give them peaceful sleep when they are able to rest and when they awaken, give them energy and help them focus clearly on the job at hand.

C For all who are diligently working on finding a cure, we ask You to grant them Your divine wisdom. We ask You to work quickly, so that through their efforts we see an end to this pandemic across the world.

P We praise and thank You, O God, for You are without beginning and without end. C Through Christ You are the creator and preserver of the whole world; but

above all, You are His God and Father, the giver of the Spirit, and the ruler of all that is, seen and unseen.

P You made the day for the works of light and the night for the refreshment of our souls. O loving Lord and source of all that is good, mercifully accept our evening sacrifice of praise.

C As You have conducted us through the day and brought us to night's beginning, keep us now in Christ; grant us a peaceful evening and a night free from sin; and at the end bring us to everlasting life through Christ, our Lord; through Him be glory, honor, and power to You in the Holy Spirit now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

THE PREFACE AND SANCTUS P The Lord be with you. C And with your spirit. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them up unto the Lord. P Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God. C It is good and right so to do. P It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to

You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who with Your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the communion of all Your saints gathered into the one body of Your Son, You have surrounded us with so great a

cloud of witnesses that we, encouraged by their faith, may run with perseverance the race that is set before us and receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

THE LORD'S PRAYER C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when

He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me." In the same way after supper He took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C And also with you.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord, that

with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and you desire to serve Him as a dynamic

disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED"

communion. "Close" communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek

to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have not communed with us

before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak to our Pastor or an Elder before

communing.

1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's mercy in Christ?

3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and the power of the

devil?

4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion with His true Body

and Blood?

5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the common cup, are

offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the Sanctuary proceed to the altar first,

standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind

the usher. This will provide a prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.

A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear glasses in the individual

trays. Gluten-free wafers are available at the usher tables in the back.

Go in the joy of sins forgiven to serve the Lord with gladness!

Make a difference in this world

through Christ by sharing His Light
