Philosopher Sir Bernard Williams is credited with saying, “The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day He created Spring.” Indeed! Although our Pennsylvania winter was mostly very mild, the excitement of spring cannot be contained. Fresh blooms, green grass, warmer days, birds chirping – the sunny days and gentle breezes make us feel hopeful, expectant, and ready to meet whatever challenge or opportunity lies ahead. The spring and summer will be especially exciting and active times for our Messiah Village campus as nursing care renovations and Project Envision construction move ahead at full steam. Our two senior centers will be thinking about staying fit as Senior Health & Fitness Day and the Cumberland County Senior Games are on the horizon in the weeks ahead.

I hope you’ll take time to read this issue which is full of interesting and insightful information. You’ll catch up on the latest home design and style trends from our in-house design guru Nadine Frey. “Foodies” should be sure to read pages 8 & 9 for a preview of culinary news, including what’s on the menu in our new Village Square restaurants, Kathryn’s on the Square and Café 100. It’s hard to believe that by the fall, Village Square will be home to new residents and bustling activity. And, as you noticed, our cover features the dynamic duo of Kelli Mills and Kelsi Sullivan who have both forged interesting caregiving careers with our organization.

As our state (and our globe) continues to age, we need more enthusiastic, exuberant people like Kelsi to serve older adults well. Be sure to read their story on pages 10-11. Please join me in thanking God for the promise and hope of spring, and please continue to join us in praying for the safe completion of all our construction projects. I appreciate your partnership!

Sincerely,

Curt Stutzman, President & CEO

Center for Vitality and Wellness

Shortly after Messiah Village relocated to Mt. Allen Drive, a new swimming pool was built – making the Village one of the first senior living communities in the area to have this amenity. That means we now have one of the very oldest pools in the area! Our Wellness team and Wellness members are thrilled about the new Center for Vitality and Wellness slated to open in Village Square later this year.

According to Supervisor Heidi Koch, the beautifully designed new saltwater pool will be about 50% larger with 3 lap swimming lanes. From larger changing rooms with more showers and lockers to a swimsuit dryer, the new aquatic center will be at the center of a robust program suited to older adults.

“Our team focuses on functional fitness; training the body for activities performed in daily life,” says Koch. The new fitness and aerobics studios will give space for more classes and will be outfitted with

brand new equipment from Keiser Air and SciFit. Koch says they hope to extend hours of operation and add classes for members who are still working. Presently, the Wellness Center has 345 members actively using the current facilities. This group includes community members, Messiah Village residents, and Messiah Lifeways team members. Koch hopes that the new Center for Vitality and Wellness will attract new people looking to improve their health.

“So many older adults express frustration with the traditional gym atmosphere and approach, which is not always inviting for them. They are relieved to see that we offer a variety of exercise classes suited to their needs.” If you aren’t convinced, Koch offers this advice “Be our guest – put our service to the test! Visit and make sure we can meet your needs. Investing just a small amount of time in being active can produce big dividends in better health.” To view current wellness offerings, visit or call 717.591.7222.

Excitement is building as the new pool takes shape and begins to look like the inviting rendering pictured below! It won’t be long until the doors are open and residents and community members can enjoy all the amenities offered at Village Square.

The “cat is out of the bag.” If you hadn’t heard by now, long-time Director of Volunteers, Lois Hutchison is retiring this July after 28 years of faith-filled service at Messiah Village. Like many soon-to-be retirees, Lois and her husband Steve have done their fair share of planning for retirement, but like most others, it revolved primarily around finances. But what about planning for things like health and wellness, personal development and productivity, and purpose in retirement?

Lois considered these other aspects, but really needed more guidance and structure in her approach. She was a prime candidate for a new service being offered by Messiah Lifeways Coaching, known as Retirement Options Coaching (ROC). This new program assists retirees and those nearing retirement plan for the next phase of life by assessing, focusing, and guiding retirees through a Life Options Profile™. Lois worked with Lifeways Coach, Matthew Gallardo, to attain a personal, practical, and relevant self-portrait of her lifestyle. Messiah Lifeways Magazine recently sat down with Lois to discuss her experience.

MLM: What did retirement mean to you prior to participating in the ROC program?

LH: It was a bit of a mystery. I have worked all my life and wasn’t sure what my life would look like after I retire.

MLM: What were your thoughts on the ROC program before starting it?

LH: I wasn’t sure how it could help, but was interested because I felt I needed more help in planning and feeling prepared in retirement.

MLM: What did you like most about ROC?

LH: I loved the [self-study] book What Color is Your Retirement? It had lots of great information and insight. It really reinforced and affirmed certain ideas I had about retirement. It was also very encouraging and easy to read.

MLM: What did you learn about yourself by enrolling in this program?

LH: I wasn’t taking care of myself as well as I should have. My self-care was really lacking, and I’ve changed some of my behaviors to improve my health. I also realized that I need to get back to enjoying the simple things in life like reading, which used to be one of my favorite pastimes. It helped me realize – this retirement thing is REALLY going to happen! And that it’s time to prepare, and you need to get yourself in order as early as you can.

What Color is Your Retirement? By Matthew Gallardo, BASW, ROCC

MLM: What would you tell others on the verge of retirement about the ROC program?

LH: Definitely do it! Retirement Options Coaching helps give perspective on your preparedness by analyzing and putting those results on paper. It shows where you are doing well and areas that you need to work on [with simple color patterns that assess 6 arenas of life after retirement]. I liked the process of self-reflection, and it was a very positive experience. It helped me figure out where I am in life, but also provides a clearer path to move forward. Lastly, I appreciated the opportunity; I found it very helpful and am thankful to have a plan in place.

If you want to learn more about Retirement Options Coaching, please contact Matthew Gallardo at 717.591.7225 or email [email protected].

As part of Retirement Options Coaching, the Life Options ProfileTM concentrates on six key life arenas: Career and Work, Health and Wellness, Finance and Insurance, Family and Relationships, Leisure and Social, and Personal Development.

Since you started working at Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village have you noticed a change in the customization preferences of new residents?

What I notice most is that folks are more aware of current design trends and which of these trends they personally enjoy. I attribute this to the vast exposure that cable tv shows and the internet have brought to the world of design. Knowledge of “good design” is now attainable to virtually anyone! It’s our responsibility to stay on-point with those same trends when offering resident selections. We are currently examining our overall design offer to ensure it’s still working.

What happens when new residents move to an existing cottage or apartment?

Even though some physical structures might be over 20 years old, when our skilled Construction Services team is finished with the work, the home looks brand new. At the very least, they’ll choose all new flooring. We paint the entire space, including walls, ceilings, doors, and trim and update all of the appliances throughout the residence. Often this includes new kitchen countertops and hardware. Older residences will also get a thorough review of heating and air conditioning systems, replacement window updates, install raised bathroom vanities and commodes, and walk-in showers in lieu of bathtubs. The average timeline from reservation to the completion of construction is approximately 90-120 days.

Retirement Living in an “HGTV”

What has been your favorite or most interesting customization request so far?

I really appreciate it when a resident requests a new design challenge for me tackle. So far, I have made accommodations for walk-in bathtubs, wash tubs for Fido, and the removal of bathrooms to make room for additional closets. I’ve designed custom closet installation plans, moved laundry rooms into bathrooms, created great outdoor spaces, and expanded cottages by finishing out basements. The options are endless!

Do family members ever get involved in the design process?

In many cases, yes! Recently, I collaborated with a resident’s daughter-in-law who is also an interior designer. She was very involved with the entire evolution of the apartment design as her mother-in-law was in New Jersey. We developed a great working relationship, and she brought some unique ideas to the apartment that will visually set it apart while increasing storage and functionality. The result is simply stunning! (see photo of the newly designed apartment on page 5)

Is there anything currently available in residential living or do you have a long waiting list for someone wanting to make the move?

We have a number of available apartments ranging in size from a studio, one bedroom, and up to two bedrooms – with or without sunroom options. We also have a limited number of cottages available.

If you think retirement living means cookie-cutter design, moth balls, and faded wallpaper, let us change your mind! We interviewed with Nadine Frey, Residential Living Counselor (and unofficially named design coach extraordinaire), to understand retirement living in an “HGTV world.” Nadine joined the Messiah Lifeways team nearly 3 years ago and brings a diverse background of experience and education, including a degree in Interior Design from Drexel University and a Masters from West Chester University. She’s got that knack for design that residents love when planning their new living space.

What is Personal Care?As a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Messiah Village offers 3 distinct levels of living: Residential Living (RL), Enhanced Living (EL) and Nursing Care (NC). And though the care continuum is valuable, understanding the differences can be challenging.

Residential Living at Messiah Village is often referred to as Independent Living (IL) by many. It offers an independent maintenance-free lifestyle for those age 62 and better. Here many residents still remain very active, but no longer have to worry about cutting grass, shoveling snow, or making home repairs. They enjoy assurance that when they or their spouse need more care, it’s available right on this campus.

Enhanced Living, which is licensed as Personal Care, offers the next tier of care after RL residents begin to consistently require help with activities of daily living, meals, and medication monitoring. Mobility and memory issues, along with other chronic health problems, also warrant either a move from RL or a direct admission for those coming from off campus. Though EL residents enjoy daily assistance, they still maintain a certain amount of autonomy, and we encourage them to be as independent as possible.

Nursing care provides constant 24-hour care due to chronic and more serious health issues, immobility,

or higher degrees of dementia. These residents also receive periodic physician visits.

Of the three levels of living, Enhanced Living cares for the widest array of residents ranging from those who need a bit more help than what RL provides, to those with mild to moderate mobility and memory impairment.

Still a bit confused? Determining what your loved one needs is not something you have to figure out alone. In Pennsylvania, admission into either personal care or nursing requires a physician’s order. Secondly, our admissions team administers a medical assessment to help determine what level is most appropriate. For additional insight, take a look at the infographic on this page to get a better sense of when a loved one may need personal care.

If you’d like to learn more about Enhanced Living at Messiah Village, please contact the Welcome Center at 717.790.8201.

Sandy Achenbach quickly asserts that moving to Mount Joy Country Homes in 2016 is one of the best decisions she’s ever made. After retiring, Sandy wanted relief from the responsibility of home maintenance and repairs. “From the first time I saw the community, I knew it was where I wanted to be. The residents I met were welcoming and kind – it’s a caring community.” She recalls that while she was moving in, with boxes stacked everywhere, a neighbor walked over, smiled and simply said, “Just so you know, it does get better!” The two became fast friends. Sandy enjoys having walking buddies, shopping companions, and people with whom she can share prayer concerns.

Sandy certainly loves the maintenance-free lifestyle but she really enjoys the fellowship and activities like movies and shuffleboard. “Monday morning coffees are great for talking, catching up on news, and hearing about upcoming events. The events are mostly resident initiated and directed, which means they are things we especially enjoy.”

Sometimes people are hesitant to make a move to a senior living community. Sandy appreciated having a great realtor who walked her through

the process. “I knew I wanted to move so I sorted my belongings. I only kept what I really needed to maintain the lifestyle I wanted.” Sandy readily admits that maintenance-free living has relieved a lot of pressure. “I don’t have to be concerned if anything breaks down, and the campus is safe and well-maintained.”

If you or someone you know is thinking of making a move in the Lancaster area, consider Mount Joy Country Homes. Although the campus is currently full, it’s never too early to start planning. And, as Sandy wisely suggests, “decide what type of community will enable you to have the life you want…then come visit and see if Mount Joy Country Homes fits the bill.” To schedule a tour or campus visit, please call 717.653.2356.

Think Fresh. Think Farm-to-Table.

As we head into the summer season, the Messiah Village campus is bustling with excitement over the opening of Village Square with its brand new apartment homes and many new amenities including two new culinary options – Café 100 and Kathryn’s on the Square.

“The culinary line-up this fall at Messiah Village will be nothing short of extraordinary,” remarked Lindsey Clinton, Executive Chef at Messiah Village. “We have been developing the fall menus for both new restaurants and have been in contact with a number of local farms and vendors so we are able to provide residents with healthy, delicious meals featuring locally sourced ingredients.”

The menus at both venues will be distinctly different from Messiah Village’s two existing restaurants: the Fireside Café & Grille and Evergreen Café.

Chef Lindsey (pictured left) recently met with a group of future Village Square residents and current residents (pictured on page 9) to discuss the menu options and to taste test several proposed dishes including Moroccan Lamb Lollipops with Yogurt Dipping Sauce. A hands-down fan favorite from the focus groups was Crispy Wild Mushroom Crab Cakes with Rosemary Dijon Aioli. “We have such a talented group of chefs on our culinary team, and it is an honor to lead them. The skill set and enthusiasm for what we are creating at our two new venues, Café 100 and Kathryn’s on the Square, is very exciting and fulfilling,” concluded Chef Lindsey.

Café 100 and Kathryn’s on the Square are slated to open fall 2017.

In the 120+ years of its history and heritage, one of the fundamental pillars of Messiah Lifeways is its continual commitment to caring for and enhancing the lives of older adults. It takes a dedicated and special person to fill these roles. Imagine all the caregivers and workers who have graced the halls from Bailey Street in 1896 to present day Messiah Lifeways; from dining to laundry, maintenance to hands-on caregiving and beyond, it’s awe inspiring. More recently, some of these marvelous people have worked here for decades, like Barbara Faranov, who recently celebrated 35 years at Messiah Lifeways and Greg Witters who’s worked here 36 years. We’ve also been blessed with multi-family and multi-generational team members working here, helping to build a legacy of care.

For instance, Kelli Mills has been working here nearly 26 years and began as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). She has subsequently worked her way up to the VP of Residential Services & Operations. Then in March 2016, her daughter, Kelsi Sullivan, began working at Messiah Lifeways as an aide in Enhanced Living and a home care aid. While working here along with another part-time job at a local diner, Kelsi is working toward getting her RN degree from Harrisburg Area Community College. Kelsi shared, “my mother always encouraged me to consider nursing and try a caregiving job at Messiah Lifeways.” She listened to mom and quickly fell in love with it. Once she earns her degree, she hopes to be able to continue working for Messiah Lifeways as a nurse. We’re very excited for Kelsi and what the future holds for her.

Opportunity Knocks The need for long-term care in this country continues to grow, and so too do the job opportunities. This is largely in part to the 76+ million baby boomers that may need hands-on care and medical care as they age. Kelsi is part of the future of caregiving in America, and others like her will have the opportunity to fill a great need and serve others through jobs such as nursing, CNAs, home care aides, and other medical assistant positions. Kelsi’s enthusiasm and passion for helping others shines a bright light on the future. If you know someone searching for this same opportunity, please encourage them to visit MessiahLifeways.org/Jobs.

“I love that Kelsi works here! I’m excited, proud and happy all at one time! Kelsi grew up at Children’s Family Center (where U-GRO currently is located) and has been exposed to older adults her entire life. I believe that is why she has the love that she does for older adults.” – Kelli Mills

Change is one of the realities of operating a non-profit ministry for more than 120 years. People change. Buildings change. Policies change. Needs change. But when you strive to keep the mission at the center of decision-making, you often find that old things become new; and that returning to our roots is always right.

A volunteer noticed that some nursing care residents needed new clothes as she assisted them to the Chapel for Sunday morning services. She cared enough to notice some well-worn sweaters and wondered how we could discreetly provide updated clothing choices. Sharon Engle, VP of Gift Development, recalled the original intent of the Clothing Sale was to provide a convenient way for nursing care residents to choose personal items. She and others recalled how folks would go to

the Fellowship Hall and “shop.” After the nursing residents finished choosing, the remaining sale items were made available for others to purchase. And the proceeds of any cash sales benefitted the Auxiliary. Over the years, the sale moved to the Community Room, making it less convenient for nursing residents to shop on their own. But that didn’t stop the team from developing a creative solution. Case worker Ike Schlossberg rallied his colleagues to provide a list of clothing items needed by current nursing residents. A small group of team members did the “shopping” before the February 2017 sale opened to the public. They chose everything from socks and pajamas to shirts, slacks, and shoes. Ike and his colleagues distributed the goodies to nearly 2 dozen residents. Ike shared, “The gifts were very well-received; and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Auxiliary and its members for their generosity. It was no small task to organize this meticulous and thoughtful shopping trip…I am very thankful for the efforts to coordinate this donation. I look forward to being part of this renewed annual tradition of sharing Christ-like love with residents in need.”

If you’d like to donate gently used clothing or personal items for the June 2017 clothing sale, please contact Becky Steele at 717.795.5579 or Rosene Miller at 717.697.4666 x5411.

Shopping for a Good Cause

“One of my favorite things about caregiving is just getting to know the residents. You learn so much about them and their lives by just helping them with their everyday tasks. I also love how rewarding my job is. Leaving work every day knowing you did good in someone’s life and made them smile is the best feeling in the world. I love making the residents laugh and smile! The conversations you have and the connections you make with residents makes it hard to not love working at Messiah Village.”

- Kelsi Sullivan
