Hunger for God – A Poem

March is the season of Lent. What makes us hungry during Lent?

Forty days of prayer and fasting, forty days of hunger and thirst; Forty days to put self behind us, forty days in Jesus immersed! In this Lenten time we hunger for God, come to know that Jesus comes first.

May our hunger not be for manna, may we thirst, instead, to be blessed. May our hunger be for justice – justice for the poor and oppressed. In this Lenten time we hunger for God, come to know that Jesus knows best.

May we come through Lent’s forty trials to a truly God-centred place! May we cease obsession with mirrors, come to look, instead, on Your face In this Lenten time we hunger for God, may we all encounter Your grace.

Dear Friends

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship, persecution or famine, nakedness, peril or sword? It is written, ‘For your sake we are being put to death all day long, and reckoned as sheep for the slaughter.’ In all these things, however, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. I am convinced that nothing can separate us from Christ’s love. Neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, nor the present nor the future, nor any powers, nor height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is ours in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 8:35-39] During my time in ministry I have conducted several services in which couples renewed their wedding vows, one of which, a wedding anniversary celebration, included the giving and receiving of rings. I thought it was a really fitting gesture as these rings symbolised a bond that had stood the test of time, a companionship that had grown and a celebration of a loving relationship that had been through so much in their time together, but which was stronger now than when they first got married. Thinking about it, this is exactly the sort of relationship God wants us to enjoy with God. An unbreakable, special bond, rooted in love and in time spent together. Too often our relationship with God is hopelessly one-sided, with our rejections and betrayals. But whilst so many human partnerships flounder and fail because of such betrayals, God does not give up on us so easily. The love of God is as strong as ours is weak, as sure as ours is fragile. However often we go off, thinking we don’t need God, we will be continuously sought out, as God longs to draw us close again. The reading from Romans is one of my absolute favourites. It tells me that whatever I get wrong, whenever I go astray, God yearns to welcome me back. I only have to respond, to experience once again God’s love in all its fullness. And if any of you would like to renew your wedding vows, do get in touch, it is a lovely service!

God bless,

Yvonne

Mothering Sunday – 4th Sunday in Lent

There is an old Jewish saying: God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers.

Mother Church, Mother Earth, Mother of the Gods – our human mothers – all of them have been part of the celebration of ‘Mothering Sunday’ – as the fourth Sunday in Lent is affectionately known. It has been celebrated in the UK since at least the 16th Century.

In Roman times, great festivals were held every Spring to honour Cybele, Mother of all the Gods. Other pagan festivals in honour of Mother Earth were also celebrated. With the arrival of Christianity, the festival became one honouring Mother Church.

Mothering Sunday is about the freedom that we gain through the promise of Jesus Christ delivered through our Mother the Church. People were encouraged to go to their ‘Mother Church’ (their home church or their home Cathedral) to worship and give thanks.

During the Middle Ages, young people apprenticed to craftsmen or working as ‘live-in’ servants were allowed only one holiday a year on which to visit their families – which is how ‘Mothering Sunday’ got its name. This special day became a day of family rejoicing, and the Lenten fast was broken. In some places the day was called Simnel Day, because of the sweet cakes called simnel cakes traditionally eaten on that day.

In recent years the holiday has changed and in many ways now resembles the American Mother’s Day, with families going out to Sunday lunch and generally making a fuss of their mother on the day.

2020 World Day of Prayer

Warwick Road URC - Friday 6 March 2020, 11.00 am

Come along and be part of the largest church congregation in the world! In the late 1800s and early 1900s, groups of women came together to pray on a common theme of mission. In 1926 a group of American women produced an order of service that was sent out worldwide. This was the beginning of the World Day of Prayer. The inspiration led to other countries joining in, and the UK joining in the 1930s. Each year the service is prepared by women from a different country, with the focus on the culture, faith, history, geography, economy and politics of that country. This year it has been prepared by the Christian women of Zimbabwe who call us to: “Rise! Take your mat and walk” (John 5. 2-9). It is a challenge to each one of us, to respond to Jesus’ call. Zimbabwe is a former British colony which has suffered a great deal in the past. In the 1890s, Cecil Rhodes exploited the country’s mineral wealth with his British South Africa Company. Missionaries brought Christianity to Zimbabwe just before the establishment of colonial rule. They built schools, hospitals and churches, many of which are still in use today. The church became increasingly critical of the government and supported the movement for black majority rights. Independence came at a huge price as thousands of lives were lost when people rose against the colonisers. In 1965 Ian Smith, as Prime Minister, declared unilateral independence under white minority rule, but it wasn’t until 1980 that Zimbabwe eventually became independent, led by Robert Mugabe, the first African Prime Minister. In 2000 Zimbabwe embarked on a land reform programme aiming to redistribute land, resources and wealth, but this led to the deteriorating economic situation that the country has suffered for many years. Last year Hurricane Idai devastated South East Africa. Zimbabwe suffered greatly and is still struggling to survive. How urgently do they need the world to pray. As we participate in this service, we are part of a great wave of prayer encircling the globe, which begins as the sun rises over Samoa and ends some 36 hours later back in the Pacific. We will be joining with people in over 120 countries and islands across the world.

News in brief from around the UK The Diocese of London is “On a Mission” expected to take 25 years. London has had much regeneration of its docklands in Sweetwater, Eastwick and Hackney Wick but no new churches have been built. The Diocese has invested £650,000 in a floating church.

A canal barge has been converted, complete with a concertina roof (think VW Camper Van) to enable the boat to travel the canals, including low bridges. It should, with roof raised, have a height of 3.5m (11ft 6in) and able to have a congregation of 60.

Research has revealed worshippers would walk no more than 1.5 miles. Many Londoners do not have cars and rely on bus and tube to travel. The Reverend Mark Edwards is a Church of England vicar in Newcastle with two parishes; he is also an author, father of four, two grandchildren, and chaplain to Northumbria Police. He is now training to become a Special Constable and says the roles are similar in terms of value - honesty, integrity, caring, compassionate and wanting to serve - but admits his new role will have to be on a part time basis.

The 64 mile Fife Pilgrim Way is Scotland’s first officially designated waymarked route linking two important religious sites on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. The route is similar to the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage in northern Spain as it has been planned to go through deprived areas (www.fifecoastandcountryside

trust.co.uk/walks/fife-pilgrim-way).

West Fife has communities of former coal mines and it is hoped that this route may bring some economic and social regeneration, e.g. with former Miners’ Welfare Institutes offering refreshments and accommodation; also there are plans to create a hostel in the former guest house of the medieval Franciscan friary in Inverkeithing.

The route from Culross follows in the footsteps of monks, miners and Reformation martyrs culminating in the ruins of St Andrew’s Cathedral. In 1559, following a fiery sermon by John Knox in Holy Trinity Church, St Andrews attacking Catholic idolatry, statues, ornaments and windows in the Cathedral were destroyed.

Already interest in the Pilgrim Way has exceeded expectations since the opening in July last year and it is hoped that more communities and churches along the route will see the benefits of engaging with the pilgrims.

POETRY CAFÉ

Thursday 5 March Theme: ‘Wales and Whales’

Thursday 2 April

Theme: ‘Purity & Imperfection’

Open Doors Café Warwick Road Church Centre 2.30-3.45 pm

In June, many of the churches in Coventry will join together and attempt to prayer-walk every road in Coventry. I have taken the liberty of volunteering both Warwick Road and West Orchard URCs to take part. More details to follow but for now I would like an indication of who is available to venture out in groups of two or three (not alone), to prayer-walk a number of roads adjacent to our churches. To this end I will put a list at the back of the two churches for people to be sign up to walk our roads in June. I would also be grateful if a couple of volunteers (one from each church) would make themselves available to help me coordinate our walking. As the event is going to be organised via a smartphone application, volunteers must be comfortable using smartphone apps.

In so doing, he is forced to examine his own failings as an absent husband and father. Starring Kenneth

Branagh, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and screenplay by Ben Elton.

A Look Around … the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, Ashow Recently, a friend asked if I would like to do a 4 mile circular walk from Kenilworth, taking in Ashow on the way. I agreed, although the walk turned out to be 8 miles! It was very enjoyable nonetheless. A highlight was visiting the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Ashow.

I have visited Ashow on numerous occasions before but for some reason never looked inside the church; it is well worth a visit. It is by far the oldest building in the village dating back to at least the 12th Century, and is situated in a lovely peaceful position overlooking the River Avon with its footbridge close by.

The oldest part of the church is the north wall of the nave (furthest from the river) dating back to c.1180. The chancel was built at the same time in the Norman period but has been altered in parts and re-built in other parts, probably due to the proximity of the river causing instability. Warwickshire red sandstone has been used throughout with red roof tiles, although originally the building was thatched. The square tower was added in the late 15th or early 16th Century.

By far the most impressive interior feature of the building is the fine medieval roof, with the original timbers now clearly exposed after considerable repair and restoration in 1957. There is evidence that the walls and ceiling of the chancel were highly decorated in the Norman period. In the late 18th century the moveable bench seating was replaced with the fine oak box pews. The imposing oak pulpit, reading desk and dado date from this period also.

At the entrance to the churchyard is a large yew tree, dated in 1988 to be 380 years old, reminding us of the association of yew with the English longbow. Markings on the church’s south wall nearby reveal where archers sharpened their arrows before practice shooting, with their backs to the church, across to the targets in the adjacent meadow. Practices were dictated by Edward III to take place on Sundays and holy days.

The church was originally built to serve the villages of Ashow and Bericote, though the latter was lost with the depopulation of the countryside around 1540. Ashow is now in the parish with Stoneleigh.

MORE News in brief FROM beyond THE uk

A Paris correspondent has advised that in 1936, a barge built in 1919 was converted to a chapel and is now moored at Conflans St Honorine near Paris at the confluence of the Rivers Seine and Oise. Still used by many, including canal bargemen and women, and weddings are frequently held (www.bateaujesers.org). A six year project has commenced at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, by more than 100 researchers including archaeologists, engineers, historians and chemists, to study not only the medieval structure but also the charred debris from the fire that occurred nine months ago. It could shed light on a Gallo-Roman temple to Jupiter and a Christian basilica that replaced it prior to the laying of the foundations in 1163.

Statement from British Church leaders and representatives as the UK

leaves the European Union

On 24 January 2020, Church Leaders and representatives of ten British Church

denominations and networks released a joint statement regarding the UK’s

imminent exit from the European Union. This was accompanied by a letter from

Church Leaders addressed to partner Churches and Church organisations in

Europe.

They state that “We are, and will always be, European Churches, as part of the

worldwide church. The diminishing of political ties and accountability will not affect

or impede our commitment to our partners in other parts of Europe. We will

continue to play a full and active part in European ecumenical organisations and

we will support our congregations and partners in other parts of Europe.”

The signatories include Revd Nigel Uden and Mr Derek Estill, Moderators of the

URC General Assembly.

Church and Church Centre Maintenance

There is always work to be done in the maintenance of our premises. Fabric Committee meets every quarter to review the work, and to put forward a programme for the year. Some work, such as refurbishment of the church kitchen, is very much planned. However, especially at this time of year, there is the need for unexpected expenditure. Sometimes it seems that expenditure never ceases.

Recent outgoings so far in 2020:

• new freezer for staff room (c£600)

• LED lighting in café and church window recesses (£255)

• light fitting in gents’ toilet (£45),

• cleaning and repair of gutter above main room and repair to roof above

disabled toilet (c£1,000)

• repair to gents’ toilet (£?)

• unexpected repair work for no 12 (c£2000)

• Windows upgrade to PCs in office.

The church kitchen refurbishment has a budget of c£1,800.

Most of this recent expenditure has been unplanned, but thanks to the sterling work of our treasurers Derek and Richard, the books are reasonably healthy.

In memory of … Janet Reeves

Janet Reeves died peacefully on 13 January 2020, after a short illness. From an early age, Janet attended Warwick Road Congregational Church (as it then was) with her parents. She went to Stoke Lodge School and later became a dental nurse. Others remember her as she was in the Warwick Road Youth Club – social activities included speakers on a variety of topics and were well attended. This was to be where Janet met her future husband, Peter (Pete), and they were happily married for many years. Janet was active in the life of the church and the changes that were taking place. A current choir member remembers in particular that when the new Church Centre was built, Janet decided that the new kitchen was a cold place and would be all the better if it had a microwave. So, without any further discussion or any other permissions being given, she went out and bought a microwave, and set it up! Janet took a particular liking for the Coffee Shop in the new Centre, and became a volunteer. When she finally retired, her carers and family friends would still bring her to the Centre for coffee, a snack or lunch. She simply loved being there – and the greetings were mutual. It is not clear whether Janet was ever in the church choir; however, her family have told me that she did join Warwick University Chorus, which was a very large choir that also gave performances abroad in places such as Paris, Austria and Budapest, and Janet may very well have accompanied them on those concert trips. I once visited Janet as part of my visiting group as an Elder. She was friendly and easy to talk with. I noticed two or three very nice paintings in her room and she told me that her late husband Pete had painted them – it was his hobby. God bless you, Janet.
