Messages

It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the Combined Asia Pacific Spine Society Congress and the APOA Paediatric Congress, which is being held in Kuching, Malaysia. The focus this year is on the management of difficult cases, complications and infections. We have partnered with the Infection Section of the APOA and POSNA to bring you a world class faculty and programme. Both general orthopaedic surgeons and specialists in spine and paediatric orthopaedic surgery will benefit from the numerous lectures, courses, symposia and debates. We encourage you to bring your difficult and interesting cases for discussion during the relevant sessions and we encourage active participation from the audience to provide an all-round learning experience.

We will be offering the APSS Operative Spine Surgery Course again this year and we plan to do live surgery on a number of local patients with difficult spinal pathologies. We will invite experts in the field to teach and assist our local faculty. Spaces for the APPS Operative Spine Surgery Course are limited so I encourage everyone to register

early online.

No conference is complete without some free time to meet new colleagues and reconnect with old friends. The Organising Committee has worked hard to build in some interesting activities for participants and their families. Kuching, being on the remote island of Borneo, offers some exciting local sights, sounds and experiences not to be found anywhere else in the world. I therefore strongly recommend browsing our website to plan your trip and make bookings through our secretariat.

It will be a great honour to have you all in Kuching and we look forward to welcoming you.

Dato’ Dr K S Sivananthan Organising Chairman (SPINE)

It is my great pleasure to invite all those who are interested in managing musculoskeletal conditions of children to attend the combined Congress in Kuching, the “Cat City”. Kuching is the state capital of Sarawak, from where the “White Rajahs” ruled the territory for more than 100 years (1841 to 1946). Sarawak is located at the Northern shore of the Borneo Island, which is the third largest island in the world. It is fast becoming a popular tourist destination with a wide variety of attractions from eco-tourism to high-class golf courses.

For the Congress, we managed to invite many world experts in paediatric orthopaedic surgery to share their knowledge and clinical experience during the Congress. A group of senior members from Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons of North America (POSNA) will also be joining the team to provide high quality training programmes to specialists and health personnel from this region.

I hope that you can also help us to disseminate the message to all those interested in both the clinical and research aspects of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. The Organising Committee is working hard to ensure that all those who set foot on Sarawak will not only improve their clinical knowledge, but also have the chance to have experience the unpredictable yet enchanting tropical rain forest (one of the oldest in the world) as well as the unique variety of flora and fauna.

See you in KUCHING.

Regards,

Dr Saw Aik Organising Chairman (PAEDIATRICS)

sarawak general Hospital, Kuching, sarawakThe Operative Spine Surgery Course, organised by the Asia Pacific Spine Society, is a very popular course attended by the spine surgeons from the region. The fact that the course gets overbooked many weeks before the deadline speaks well of its popularity. This is mainly because of the excellent faculty members and in-depth coverage of all the relevant topics for a practicing Spine Surgeon. There will be live surgical demonstrations of difficult cases and discussions, and input by leading faculty from around the world. In Kuching, the course will not be an exception and showcase spine surgeons from the Asia Pacific region with invited faculty from North America and Europe.

The Organising Committee will highlight the advanced level of the course focusing on cases like osteotomy for spinal deformity, non-fusion techniques for early onset scoliosis and surgical navigations and a number of surgeries will be performed live in the two days. This will also be the first time that we are holding a concurrent spine ORP course.

The APSS welcomes you to Kuching, the land of the hornbill, to experience this unique learning opportunity and the great nature.
