COMMUNICATION SKILL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
Centre for Training and Placement of St Joseph’s is largely responsible and
committed towards the identification and catering to the need of training of students
so that they are able to develop a good personality; and assist them to find right job
and help them place in right companies before they pass out. We realize that in order

NGO ACTIVITIES The current day society is plagued by poverty to an extent that it
has numbed the lives of the orphaned and aged poor. Bereft of support systems, they are left in abject misery. It is to their aid that the St. Joseph's college have meticulously planned and executed Non–governmental organizational activities, for the past one year. These

NGO activities, a brain child of our beloved Managing Director are organized by young and emerging engineers of our college to make a difference in the lives of the marginalized and impoverished. The main aim of these activities is to promote the interest of the poor, Protect the
environment Provide the basic social services, to relieve suffering & undertake community development
These activities are funded from the management to work for social change so that we create a society in which our institutions and organizations are equitable and just and all people are safe, adequately fed, adequately housed, well educated, able to work at safe, decent jobs, and able to participate in the decisions that affect their lives.NGO activities were introduced in the college on the premise that students would evince academic gains from their volunteering efforts. STUDENT ACTIVITIES St. Joseph’s college acts as a platform for the students to bring out their hidden talents and
cultivates experiential learning options outside the classroom. Also, it encourages students to actively
participate in the greater educational society through student activities. Student activities help to create
and foster leadership and involvement opportunities enhance personal escalation and development. We
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering 29
are proud to say that our students outclass in Curricular, Co-Curricular and Extra Curricular Activities.
CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Curricular activities have a number of values like educational value, development of social spirit,
character training education for leadership, worthy use of leisure time or recreational value, team spirit,
development of civic virtue, physical development, improved discipline, aesthetic development and
development of cultural values. “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never--in nothing,
great or small, large or petty--never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense” said Winston
Churchill. Similarly our students have succeeded in reaching greater heights in publishing papers in
various international journals and conferences.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
As the saying goes “Stand up to your obstacles and do something about them. You will find that
they haven't half the strength you think they have”, our students have stood up, competed and won
various prizes in symposiums conducted by other colleges.

NATIONAL LEVEL WORKSHOP ON FPGA BASED PWM CONTROL FOR POWER CONVERTERS
RESOURCE PERSON: Mr. Govindasamy, MiY circuits,
Bangalore.
On 20th August 2015, IEEE-PELS, IEEE MADRAS SECTION in
association with IEEE Student Branch Chapter of St. Joseph’s College of
Engineering which is situated at OMR, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India, conducted
a national level workshop on FPGA based PWM control for power converters. A
total of 69 participants participated in the event of which 15 are from various
reputed colleges in and around Tamilnadu, the participants are from various
levels such as U.G. students , P.G. students and also some are research
scholars and teaching faculties from other colleges who have utilized this
opportunity to a great extent. The resource person of the event was Mr.
Govindasamy, MiY circuits, Bangalore. The content of the workshop was based
on fundamentals of FPGA, FPGA development boards and interfaces and
converter design using PWM control. The workshop was conducted in two
sessions (Forenoon and Afternoon).
The Forenoon session started at 9.00 a.m. and it was a lecture session
on fundamentals of FPGA such as the structure of FPGA, Applications of FPGA
in various fields and also the interfaces and development boards built using
FPGA. The participants had a great opportunity to know how to interface an
FPGA development boards for various applications and what is their need in
those application. They also came to know some development board such as
SPARTAN 3A, Alter a which are used in various applications. The participants
also got knowledge on how to program an FPGA using VHDL or Verilog HDL
and also its design flow was well explained by the speaker, some simple
sample design programs were taught using Xilinx 14.5 ISE simulation and
synthesis tool.
The Afternoon session started at 13.00 P.M. and it was a hands on
session where the participants enjoyed by getting some practical exposure of
designing a simple program to designing a complex PWM controlled converter
using FPGA and knowing it how to interface the development boards with the
system for their respective application and this gave more practical exposure
to the participants in the field of FPGA Design. Thus the workshop came to
excellent conclusion with this tremendous knowledge sharing in the field of
FPGA.

BEST OUT GOING STUDENT AWARD Success is not the destination that we reach. Success is the quality of our
journey. The quality of the journey depends upon the goals we set the mentor we

Struggles – Seeds of Success
Sabarita (III yr)
Life always begins with struggles. Even the birth of a baby begins with the struggle of its mother.
When we are in the hard phase of life we may feel that life is dreadful. But behind every struggle
there is a surprise that awaits us. The path we choose may not always be a bed of roses. It will
definitely give us challenging situations. That is the time one must not lose courage. Even if the
paths of thorns in which we walk do not provide us the direct road to success they will definitely
leave some lessons for us. Struggles are actually the interesting parts of life. A life without
struggle is just a fantasy.
Let me tell you a story. Once, a man brought a butterfly cocoon. After some days a small opening
appeared on it. The man was eagerly waiting for the butterfly to come out. It was struggling so
much that the man thought of helping it. He brought his scissors and snipped of the cocoon. He
thought the butterfly would enlarge with large colourful wings and start flying. But that did not
happen!
The butterfly came crawling out with a swollen body and ended up spending the rest of its life
like that. The man had acted with kindness but he had not understood the consequences. The
struggle experienced by the butterfly in coming out of the cocoon enables it to fly. In the same
way struggles make us stronger. Every one of us are given a life, it is in our hands to make it
good or bad. Struggles are the key to progress. Once we start facing struggles, bravely, we will
definitely experience the joy offered by them. Don't give up in life just because things get hard.
Take up the challenges and embrace the struggles. It will make you stronger.
