John Therry Catholic High School Term 2 Week 7A Recta Sapere” To Know, Love and Relish what is Right and Just Message from Karen Young Principal Champagnat Day This year Marist schools are celebrating the Montagne Year. The word ‘Montagne’ comes from the surname of a teenage boy who grew up in the area of France where Marcellin Champagnat resided. When Marcellin was asked by the boy’s mother to visit her dying son, he found a boy who was ignorant of God. This event shocked Marcellin and encouraged him in his plans to establish an order of teaching Brothers, known today as the Marist Brothers, to help evangelise young people. Nearly two hundred years later, not only are there over two hundred Marist Brothers serving the Australian community but also many hundreds of men and women Marists educating young people in the Catholic faith as well as preparing them for full and wholesome lives as adult Christians. The Marist Brothers began their ministry in Australia in 1872 and it continues in all States and Territories today. It began when Marcellin Champagnat said ‘yes’ to God, through the invitation of a local priest for him to go to the seminary and begin his training as a priest. By 1817, Marcellin was ordained and had begun his educational work in the parishes around Lavalla in southern France. ‘Every diocese fits into our plans’ he declared. We are grateful this now includes dioceses in Australia. Marcellin died on June 6th 1840 and so each year, around this time, we celebrate Marcellin’s commitment to God and young people during what is called ‘Champagnat Week’. In this Montagne year, we are invited to focus on the ‘Montagnes’ around us, those searching for God in a world confused and distressed by a lack of opportunity for some and peace for all. Back in his time, in post revolutionary France, Marcellin supported such people, speaking out through his firm words and clear actions. In this way Marcellin displayed his deep personal faith and his generous love of people. On Saturday June 6th 2015 we once again celebrate Marcellin’s life, a life devoted to the teaching and caring of others. May he guide us in our endeavours to do the same here in Australia and beyond. Happy Champagnat Day!

Message  from  Karen  Young  -‐  Principal  Champagnat Day

This   year   Marist   schools   are   celebrating   the   Montagne   Year.

World  Environment  Day  4th  June  2015

Celebrating The Garden Planet  St   Francis   of   Assisi   lived   in   Italy   800   years   ago,   but   is   remembered   all   over   the  world   and   throughout  history  for  his  love  of  the  poor  and  his  closeness  to  God’s  creation.  For  Francis,  every  creature  was  like  a  mirror  of  God.  He  felt  a  special  closeness  to  the  poor.  He  saw  creation  as  his  family  and  spoke  of  Brother  Sun,  Sister  Moon,  Brother  Wind,  Sister  Stars.  Like  our  indigenous  people,  he  referred  to  the  earth  as  “My  Mother”.  He  loved  the  animals  he  met  in  the  woods  and  they  responded  to  him  in  a  special  way.      St  Francis  of  Assisi  was  declared  the  Patron  Saint  of  the  Environment  in  1979  by  Pope  John  Paul   II.  The  same   year   religious   leaders   from   all   different   religions  met   at   Assisi   with   the   Pope   to   pray   for   world  peace.  Francis  was  a  man  of  peace.

St Francis of Assisi

“we are interconnected in a web of life, in symbiotic relationship in food chains”

in local ecosystems,. in a biological community of Earth,

in a community that stretches beyond Earth to the solar system

and beyond the solar system to the universe.

In a theology of the Creator Spirit,

we are ever more profoundly, deeply inter-connected with all other creatures,

because the one Spirit dwells in all of us.

In the communion of the one Spirit we are in kinship with other creatures”

PROOF  OF  AUSTRALIAN  CITIZENSHIP  OR  PERMANENT  RESIDENCY

In  2014  John  Therry  was  audited  by  the  Federal  Government  Census  Bureau.    Following  that  audit  we  were  advised  that  all  students  who  had  been  born  overseas,  or  whose  parents  were  born  overseas,  had  to  have  proof  of  citizenship  or  residency.

Parents  of  students  involved  were  sent  a  letter  at  the  beginning  of  this  year  asking  to  provide  the  necessary  documentation.    To  date  not  all  have  been  returned.    If  you  have  a  student  who  falls  into  this  criteria  could  you  please  send  the  relevant  documentation  to  the  school  as  soon  as  possible.

Parents  who  have  not  replied  should  have  received  a  letter  in  the  mail  during  the  last  week.    It  is  important  for  us  to  hold  this  documentation  so  we  comply  with  Australian  Government  Census  regulations.

If   we   do   not   hold   the   documentation   we  will   be   denied   federal   funding   for   the   students   involved.     The  school   relies   heavily   on   this   funding   to   ensure   we   can   offer   all   students   the   facilities   required   for   their  education.    If  we  were  placed  into  a  position  of  having  to  pass  this  cost  on  to  the  parents  it  would  equate  to  a  significant  increase  in  your  fees.

If  you  have  any  questions  regarding  this  matter  please  call  Mrs  Josephine  Geer  via  the  school  office  on  4645  8100.              Josephine  Geer  School  Secretary

Top Tips for Moving Information into Long Term Memory

The  following  are  some  tips  which  may  help  you  to  move  information  from  short  to  long  term  memory.   1. BE ENGAGED: If  you  are  interested  in  what  you  are  learning  you  are  more  likely  to  remember  it.    Ask

questions,  pre-‐read  information,  make  summaries  and  follow  up  on  things  you  don’t  understand.

2. USE REPETITION: Repetition  is  key  to  transferring  information  from  short  term  to  long  term  memory.    The  more  often  you  practice  a  technique,  or  revise  your  information  the  better  it  will  transfer  to  long  term  memory.

3. RECORD INFO: Don’t  just  write  down  everything  your  teacher  says,  or  copy  straight  from  a  textbook  or  the  Internet.    Think  about  what  is  being  communicated  and  create  notes  that  are  accurate,  meaningful  to  you  and  build  connections.    Mind  maps  are  a  helpful  tool  for  this.

4. ORGANISE INFO: When  you  are  studying  for  a  topic,  make  sure  you  organise  the  information  into  small,  distinct  chunks.

5. VISUALISE INFO: Build  a  mental  picture  of  what  you  are  trying  to  remember,  like  the  parts  of  a  plant  or  a  battle  in  history.

6. BUILD ASSOCIATIONS: This  might  mean  developing  some  kind  of  sensory  cue  which  enables  you  to  remember  information  such  as  smell  or  sound.    Try  turning  your  notes  into  a  song  or poem.

7. SHAKE THINGS UP: Write  in  a  crazy  font,  use  lots  of  colours,  use  your  left  hand  to  write  instead  of  your  right…anything  that  makes  your  brain  have  to  engage  more  actively  with  what  it  is  you  are  trying  to  learn.

8. FUEL YOUR BRAIN: If  you  want  your  brain  to  work  well  for  you,  you  also  need  to  work  well  for  your

brain.    Eating  foods  rich  in  Omega  3  and  essential  fatty  acids  (such  as  fish,  nuts,  legumes  and  leafy  green  vegetables)  will  help  your  brain  to  function  optimally.    Drink  lots  of  water  so  that  your  brain  doesn’t  dehydrate.    Keep  away  from  too  much  caffeine  which  may  impair  brain  function.

9. REST YOUR BRAIN: Getting  fresh  air  and  exercise  helps  your  brain  to  process  information,  as  does  sleep.    Most  students  need  8-‐10  hours  of   sleep  a  night.  The   last   stage  of  memory  consolidation   takes  place  while  you  are  sleeping  so  ensure  you  get  enough  sleep  each  night.

Mr  Morris  Mr  Tannous

  No  Game  –  Bye  round

7  Boys  Soccer   Mr  Wakeling   Lost  7-‐1

A   really   fast   paced   game.   Some   amazing  touches  and  play  by  both   teams.  However  lack   of   focus   in   defence   allowed   the  opposition   to   score   4   quick   goals.   The  second  half  was  a  much  better  team  effort.  MVP:  Hayden  Keith

8/9  Boys  Soccer   Mr  O’Connell   Lost  1-‐0

The   boys   played   extremely  well   and   both  teams   were   evenly   matched   throughout  the  game.  One  opportunity  was  capitalised  by   St.   Benedict’s   which   saw   a   1-‐0   result.  Boys   were   great   representatives   for   the  school  and  should  be  proud  of  their  efforts.  MVP:  Brodie  O’Neill

10-‐12  Boys  Soccer   Mr  Williamson   Draw  1-‐1

A   game   we   should   have   won   given   the  number   of   chances   created,   especially   in  the  first  half.  Well  done  to  Jayden  Anthony  who   raced   away   to   score   from   a   Tyler  Faust   goal   kick.   Strong   work   through   the  midfield  and  central  defense.  MVP:  Lucas  Rando

9  Girls  Netball   Ms  Patterson   Won  27-‐11

10-‐12  Girls  Netball   Ms  Hogan   Won  33-‐1

An   exceptional   game.   The   team   worked  hard  and  the  ball  flowed  beautifully  up  the  court.   Strong   defensive   pressure   forced   a  number  of  turnovers.  Well  Done.  MVP:  Kiri  Maika
