Coal is Cool!Mrs. Kinner’s 3rd Grade Science students explored the nonre-newable resource, coal during our Earth’s Resources unit. We had a guest speaker. Mr. Cornett come to visit us and teach us a little about his job as a coal miner. We learned the importance of taking care of our resources on Earth and the many uses of coal. Mr. Cornett also brought us a sample of coal from the mine that he works in and some of his tools and gear that he uses/wears daily to do his duties. We appreciate Mr. Cornett and our other Maysville family members that work hard in the mines!

Have you moved? If so, please contact your child’s school with your new address and update any other information that may have changed.

It is important we have current contact information.

Recently, Mrs. Branch invited a group of her 5th grade Science stu-dents to participate in a Marble Challenge as a culminating activity for their Force and Motion unit. Th e goal of the Marble Challenge was to have students work in small groups to build an index card ramp that would allow a marble to travel through it at the slowest speed possible.

Each group of students worked together to design a blueprint before they began the actual building process. Th e next step was for them to use 3 X 5 inch index cards to build their ramps, which they taped onto a large sheet of poster paper. Th ey completed many "unoffi cial" trial runs during this process to see how slow the marble was traveling through their ramps.

Th e groups ended their work by completing 3 "offi cial" time trials and determining the average time it took the marble to move from start to fi nish without stopping. Th e group of Liam Wahl, Nathan Davis and Carter Parks had the slowest time and won the challenge.

Finally, students moved the ramps to the foyer, taped them to the windows and participated in a Gallery Walk for fourth and fi ft h grade students. Th ey demonstrated the ramps to students and teachers and were eager to answer "Science" questions about their group's project.

Students used their knowledge of force and motion to build their ramps, practiced skills needed to eff ectively work together in small groups and were successful in cre-ating a fi nal product.
