Christopher Wallin, a fi ft h grade student in Ms. Emler’s home-room and son of Sabrina Woft er, has just completed a solo proj-ect and presentation in Social Studies. Chris met with the gift ed teacher, Mrs. McHugh, several mornings a week for several weeks to research, plan, and create a map of an imaginary con-tinent. Chris used a variety of resources to connect and relate several concepts within the topic of Geography. He used globes and other geographic tools to gather, organize, and report in-formation, create maps, and use latitude and longitude to make generalizations about climate and location. Chris is very inter-ested in Geography and Cartography. Chris’ project displays his signifi cant depth of knowledge in this area.

Maysville Elementary Peer Mediators were trained Tuesday, October 14 and Th ursday, Octo-ber 16, at Rolling Plains Church. On Tuesday, 5th grade mediators were trained and on Th ursday 4th grade mediators were trained. Th is is the fi rst year we have trained 4th graders.

Mediators are there to help disputants listen to each other and fi nd a solution to their problem. Mediators do not take sides and are there to help the disputants listen to each others side of the sto-ry so they can see the whole story, not just their point of view. Th e disputants are then responsible for fi nding a fair win/win solution to their prob-lem.

Our mediators will be on duty at recess to help with any confl icts that might arise. Th e following students are our fi ft h grade peer mediators: Mal-lori Bradley, Codah Bunting, Tyler Factor, Kassie Greiner, Ryan Gundlefi nger, Christian Hillis, Luke Huff , Garrett LaFallette, Emma McPeek, Camryn

Mercer, Carin Parks, Connor Rusnak, Karli Sidwell, and Emma Watson.

Th e following students are our 4th grade peer mediators: Ashton Croston, Tanner Greiner, Olivia Heckel, Abby Hoover, Mathew Jar-vis, Kyrie Kepler, Marlee Lawson, Karrah McConiha, Gracie Meredith, Casey Moore, Leandro Ramos, Julie Ramsey, Zailor Val-entine, Kamyn Walker, Kierstin Wayne, and Bryce Wilhite.

On October 23, 45 students from Mr. Dreier’s computer graphics classes, Mr. Waite’s photography and engineering classes, Mrs. Ros-siter’s traditional art classes, and Mrs. Seagro’s French classes trav-elled to Pittsburgh for a day packed with cultural experiences that many had never experienced.

Students visited the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, ate at Pittsburgh fa-vorite Primanti Brothers Deli made famous by “Man v. Food” TV show. Aft er travelling up to the top of Mt. Washington via Pitts-burgh’s incline, a cable powered rail car that travel 635 feet at a 78% incline students were also able to ride on the city’s subway.

Student got to experience Pittsburgh also through a unique “DUKW or Ducky” tour. Th e designation of DUKW is not a military pun - the name comes from the model naming terminology used by GMC; the D indicates a vehicle designed in 1942, the U meant "utility (amphibious)", the K indicated all-wheel drive and the W indicated two powered rear axles. Students were

treated to an entertaining guided tour of downtown Pittsburgh on the streets…and then driven into the river in the same vehicle for a short tour of the three rivers of Pittsburgh. Some students were even lucky enough to captain the vehicles while in the rivers.

Th e middle of the day was spent at Pittsburgh’s historic Gothic style First Presbyterian Church which gave students a good feel for what a European Cathedral would look like. First Presbyterian is also the home of 13 Louis Comfort Tiff any (the premiere glass maker at the turn of the 20th century) stained glass windows, along with over 250 other stained glass windows.

Late aft ernoon was spent on the campus of the University of Pitts-burgh and the Cathedral of Higher Learning and Carnegie Mellon which gave the students a little taste of campus life. Th e day fi nished with a docent guided tour of Th e Carnegie Mellon Museum of Art.

Th e day was fi lled with “fi rsts” for the students of Maysville. Th is was just one more way Maysville Local School’s School Board and Admin-istration has shown its commitment to providing its students with great educational experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

2013-2014 Maysville Yearbook Staff RecognizedTh e Maysville High School 2013 yearbook staff has been recog-nized by Balfour Yearbooks with an Honorable Mention Certifi -cate of Recognition for its outstanding contribution to scholastic journalism. Th e Maysville High School yearbook is recognized in the 2014 Yearbook Yearbook. Th e yearbook adviser is Greg Waite.

Yearbooks published by Balfour for the 2013 school year were evaluated in one or more of the following areas: theme develop-ment, layout design, photo content, secondary packages and cover design. For their outstanding yearbook achievement, Balfour honors approximately ten percent of yearbook staff s with Honorable Mention recognition in Yearbook Yearbook.

“To be recognized in Yearbook Yearbook, a book isn’t just good, it’s great,” director of marketing Mike Cobb said. “Balfour is proud to honor the best in Yearbook Yearbook. Every yearbook staff receiving Honorable Mention recognition can take pride in knowing that the Maysville High School 2013 yearbook was great when it came out, and it will retain its relevance 50 years from now.”

To kick off a unit on community businesses and economics, third graders recently trav-eled to several area businesses to see produc-tion in action. Th ey were treated to a tour of Conn’s Potato Chips, where they viewed the process that a potato goes through to become a potato chip, then enjoyed tasting chips fresh and hot from the assembly line. Th en they visited 5B’s, and learned about the embroidery business. Students learned how both of these local businesses began as small family enterprises, and grew into successful companies through hard work. Maysville third graders thank both Conn’s and 5B’s for allowing them to visit and learn more about community businesses. Each student will now be working on constructing their own business which will be displayed at our third grade business fair coming up in December!

Financial Aid night for seniors and their parents will be Monday, December 8th at 6:00 p.m. in the high school study hall room. All seniors attending college next year should attend with their parents. Th is is an important night to get information, from a fi nancial aid advisor, on the FAFSA form before completing it.

here from Zane State, Ohio University Zanes-ville, and Muskingum University. Senator, Troy Balderson was present to discuss further plans with students. Mike Jacoby, executive director at the Port Authority spoke to seniors about future job outlook and the importance of training and/or education aft er high school. Students completed college applications, registered for their fi nancial aid identifi cation number, and heard a presenta-tion from Ohio Means Jobs.

Th ird Graders in Mrs. Newland’s class have enjoyed learning how to play Scrabble. Th ey have found that word placement and spelling are key skills when play-

ing this board game.

Scrabble helps students with spelling, vocab-ulary, math skills, and teamwork. Th ey work well helping one another create words with their tiles. When playing Scrabble, they have so much fun they don’t even realize they are learning!

During the Monthof November

Travis Harper, top left , is representing the Harper Family shown with Mrs. Dixon, top center, Mrs. Harlan, top right, and their class, presenting them with a donation for their classroom.

Mrs. Dixon's Special Education Class at Maysville Elementary, has been chosen by the Cory Harper family to receive a donation from the Cory Harp-er Memorial Fund. Each year Cory's family has a golf outing to honor Cory's memory. Th e money raised is used to help local families in need or help with community projects.

Mrs. Dixon's class has been working to earn money to purchase tablets or laptops for their daily use. Th ey have been cooking, sewing, shopping and organizing for staff lunches. Th ey are learning many new jobs during this experience. At this time they are still working towards their goal.

Class Working Towards Goal

Mrs. Melsheimer’s class has been working on many diff erent Th anksgiving topics. We learned how the Pilgrims traveled to Amer-ica and how the First Th anksgiving became a National Holiday. We discussed many diff erent things that Pilgrims are thankful for. As a writing topic each child was asked to write about what they are most thankful for. We also made handprint turkeys and a Native American headband to celebrate Th anksgiving.

Th e preschoolers took a fi eld trip to Newton Fire Station! During the fi eld trip the preschoolers took a tour of the fi rehouse, and were able to see where the fi reman kept their special fi re clothing and fi re helmets. Some preschool-ers even tried on the heavy fi re helmets! Each preschooler pretended to put out a fi re with the fi re hose. Th ank you Newton Fire Station for teaching us about fi re safety!

In November our themes have been focused on Restaurant, Grocery Store and Th anks-giving. Th ese themes allow us to relate real life experiences your child has had into the classroom. Each child shared their grocery store and restaurant experiences with their teacher and then as a teacher we are able to watch their true experiences in dramatic

play. We t u r n e d the house area into a pizza res-t a u r a n t . Th e kids pretended to be a chef, waiter, and a customer. With all three of these themes we are able to relate them all together for the chil-dren. We are able to relate them for the children by talking about go-ing to the grocery store to buy the food for restaurants, or to go to the grocery store to buy food for your Th anksgiving dinner. Th e focus of our Th anksgiving theme is to share what we are thankful for, family traditions, and the food we like to eat at Th anksgiving!

No Reason Your Children Should Become Bored! As the days get colder and the nights get longer, you may fi nd your family spending more time indoors where it’s warm. Th at is no reason your children should become bored! Maysville Elementary has many options for students to continue to learn and be challenged using online resources during those wintery months. All students have accounts with Raz-Kids, which off ers students the opportunity to develop and sharpen their reading skills.

First through fi ft h graders have accounts with learning.com, which provides interactive learning cours-es in Technology.

Fourth and Fift h Graders also have accounts in TypingMaster, which needs to be entered using the Maysville Elementary Webpage (your child has to login using Maysville Elementary Login Portal) , click on “Teacher Pages,” then click on “Special Areas,” which will take you to Ruth Birchfi eld, Technology Teacher. Click on the red website button to enter the website. Learning.com will be listed fi rst, and then Typ-ingMaster’s login portal will be next. “Keyboarding Fun” is also ac-cessed here; it provides keyboarding resources and games for all levels of learning. All intermediate students are familiar with the website because they use it during Technology Class. If your child cannot re-member his/her login information, or if you have any problems using these resources, feel free to email rbirchfi [email protected].

Kindergarten and 1st & 2nd grade links are also available on the web-page for our primary students, which they use in Technology Class also.

Th e Muskingum County Library also has many learning opportunities; Tumble Books, Searchasaurus, Kidsearch and World Book just to name a few. In a tech savvy world, any opportunity you can provide for your child to strengthen and promote the use of their computer skills will help prepare them for the exciting future that awaits them!
