Message from the Rabbi (continued from page 1)

spirit, and you can find yourself making deeper connections to those around you.

Doing this can often be hard - finding the time to study, a class that fits our busy schedules, or feeling that traditional learning just doesn’t speak to you. I would like to help breathe life into Judaism for you – whether that be through discussion on Jewish parenting books, looking at modern commentary on ancient texts, or exploring Judaism through art, music, or dramatic arts. Not only do we want to be remembered for life, we want our Judaism to be alive!

This year, I ask you to join me in encouraging God to remember us for life by not only saying this prayer, but by also putting it into action. Along with all the typical “New Year’s Resolutions” to get physically healthy, invest in your spiritual and emotional self. Learn Hebrew or Torah Trope. Read an online weekly Torah commentary (or join us for Gutsy Torah on Shabbat morning!) Engage in conversation with your family about how you can celebrate Shabbat in your home.

We hope you’ll put your new skills to use by being a part of our leading and reading teams - leading services on Shabbat evening or morning, or reading Torah. These roles not only are helpful to the synagogue community, but also elevates your experience of participation as a leader.

I am excited to support you in this endeavor by being available to brainstorm the best learning path for you, practicing Torah readings, exploring texts, and perhaps by creating new oppor-tunities for spiritual growth here for everyone at Kol Ami. I look forward to learning with you! L’chaim!

Request from Rabbi Blatt Please keep us informed of significant events in your family life. It is our desire to be of help and service to you in times of special need. It is especially important that we know of those in the hospital, and assisted living or nursing homes, so that we can visit and they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shab-bat Services.

Have a Happy and Healthy Sweet New Year Shanah Tovah From Mitch Weiss, Executive Director and Staff and Kol Yeladim Teachers.

B’Yachad By David Pearlman, President

Shalom Kol Ami!

After literally years of focus groups, search committees, interview weekends, and all those surveys, the fu-ture we have been so

actively talking about has arrived. We are delighted to have welcomed Rabbi Blatt and her beautiful family last month to Kol Ami. Having her here on our first Shab-bat in August was amazing. We came together as a Kehillah and welcomed her with large crowds Friday night and Satur-day morning. It was lovely and the ruach was palpable. Yet, it was the events of that Saturday evening and the days that followed that I believe we will reference when we speak of Rabbi’s arrival years from now. It was not the welcome we wanted for her or for us. I know I have written about Mike Korenvaes already and am grateful for all the supportive words you have sent me upon reading it. We are indeed a close community, and this proved it to me. I just wish to conclude my thoughts about that weekend by making sure each member family is also extremely proud of her. Rabbi was amaz-ing for the Korenvaes family AND also the Kol Ami family. All those surveys and all those interview weekends all spoke to Kol Ami looking for a mensch. Well, I think we found one!

So what now? The work of the Transition Committee continues. Rabbi Blatt and I continue to meet every Tuesday morning to talk about how things are going. The Transition Committee meets every other Wednesday to make sure we are planning and communicating effectively. We have been announcing and are hopeful you will respond by emailing [email protected] to provide feedback. As President of Kol Ami, I want you to know that I could not be more pleased with the work everyone is doing. Todah Rabah!

And yet, with Rabbi’s arrival and all the other things happening here, it is import-ant to remember as we close out Sep-tember, Rosh Hashanah will be upon us. I am excited to see so many of you over this holiday season. This year, we will be sending out a Volunteer Booklet of Com-mittees that Sharon Cross and her team have put together. I encourage you to look that over and find something that is your passion. For far too long, we have been operating with committees of one. Our best committee in my opinion is Sue Dvorchik and her Ma’asim Tovim Com-mittee. They are truly what makes Kol

Ami special, and how do they do that? It is not only because of Sue’s leadership, but also her ability to build a tremen-dous team. If Sue were a committee of one, this would not be the case. So, find your committee, and help us reach new heights as we enter this new year.

I eagerly await greeting you this High Holiday season! This is our year. I hope you will come and be a part of it!

Shanah Tovah!

B’Yachad, David Pearlman

Please join us for our next Howard Kanter Kiddush Fund Luncheon on Saturday, September 7. These complimentary luncheons are catered by Nosh Caterers and are also

open to non-members in the greater Jewish Community.

Although members are not required to RSVP to attend, we do ask that any non-members who plan to attend contact the Kol Ami office at (813) 962-6338 to make reservations so we can prepare appropriately.

The Kiddush Fund, created by Kol Ami member Howard Kanter (z”l), provides one Kiddush Luncheon per month on a Shabbat that does not have a Kiddush Luncheon sponsored by members or another committee of the synagogue.

Your extra donations (in addition to your usual contributions to Kol Ami) help insure this effort for years to come.

We hope to see you on Saturday, September 7. Also, please be sure to mingle and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at these wonderful opportunities to make new friends and enjoy fellowship with your Kol Ami family.

Facility Focus & Security Spotlight

By Jon Zimmer, Security Committee Chair

In lieu of posting an article this month or describing what the security team at Kol Ami is doing to improve safety and security issues at our shul, I have decided to write about my mentor and my friend, Mike Korenvaes (z”l). Mike is the reason that I am in the position I am in now, as Security Chair, and

more importantly, why Kol Ami is significantly more secure and safe than in years past.

I want to list just a few things that Mike got started doing: He strengthened our relationship w/ the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) and the individual officers who regularly help protect our shul; He chaired the security team and through his efforts, organized a great crew of volunteers; He did the rigorous and strenuous application process for TWO Homeland Security Grants, both of which were approved; He also took care of the aftermath, which is arguably even more grueling – dealing with vendors, paperwork, and most cumbersome of all, dealing w/ the government!; And he did this all with one thing in mind – helping his congregation and his fellow congregants at Kol Ami.

As you likely know, Mike had his own office at Kol Ami, and did it all as an unpaid volunteer. He was our Executive Director, Mitch Weiss’s right hand man, and helped in other ways than just security. Mike was in charge of Chai Guys and organized efforts of volunteers to do yard work, clean up, and efforts to beautify the building. He dealt with various vendors that come to the shul regularly (landscaping, air conditioning, ADT alarm, etc). It’s a testament to the type of person Mike was that so many of these folks came to Mike’s funeral and/or to shiva. He wasn’t just “some guy they did business with” to them, he was a valued partner and a person they enjoyed working alongside.

Selfishly, I miss my friend. I wish he was still with us. It’s a loss to us all as a congregation, but of course as a devoted fam-ily man, he will be missed most by his loving wife Cindy, his sons Bill and Drew, and his family. Mike’s memory already is a blessing, as his legacy is lasting with the shul every time you look at it. From the fencing, the cameras, the gates, and more, Mike had his fingerprints over all of it. He’s irreplaceable. To honor him, I will do my best to devote as much time as I can to keeping his vision alive of a safe and secure Kol Ami, and try and keep up his good deeds.

My life was better for knowing Mike Korenvaes. And whether you knew him or not (and most of you did!), as a member of Kol Ami, yours was too.

Welcome Amy Feder-Binder, our new House Committee Chair

It is my pleasure to inform you that Amy Feder-Binder will be our new House Chair. Over the past several years, Amy has helped around our building doing various projects with Mike. Amy’s knowledge of our property will ensure safety and security. I look forward to working with Amy and the House Committee.

Kol Ami Sisterhood

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a relaxing summer. Sister- hood is off to a busy start of

the year. Lots of planning went into the Brotherhood/Sistehood Welcome Shabbat for Rabbi Blatt on August 10th. More than 135 congregants came out to show their support for our new Rabbi. Sisterhood Board members came together to support our sister Cindy mourn the passing of her beloved husband, Mike Korenvaes (z”l). He was the backbone of Kol Ami and he will be missed by everyone. The outpouring of kindness was overwhelming.

Kol Ami’s Sisterhood is a group of community-minded women. When you put us together, the group ensures that their service is given to the whole community: we volunteer at the Tampa Jewish Family Services Commu-nity Food Bank; we knit hats for Warming the World; we feed the families at the Ronald McDonald House and do a Tzedakah project in conjunc-tion with each event. My Board of sisters represent Chesed, which means kindness. That is why great things are sure to happen this year.

Our next big event is Fashion Fun for Everyone, the paid-up membership event on Sept. 22nd from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.

Jen Zimmer will feature LuLaRoe clothing. The Sisterhood Board members will be cook-ing, preparing, setting up, and decorating to make this a wonderful event. Thank you to all my board members for your hard work and dedication.

I urge everyone to get involved in our Sister-hood. The women of Sisterhood are dedicated to improving our synagogue and our Jewish

community. Their energy and passion to do Mitzvot is inspirational. Come be a part of our Sisterhood and make a contribution. Serve on our Board. We have a year full of events. Pick one that interests you and become a committee member. I look forward to greeting you as a new member.

A Mazelgram is a quick and easy way to send your Kol Ami friends and family Rosh Hashanah greetings. Just look through the enclosed list (alphabetized by first names) and check off who you want to send greetings to. Then complete the first page order form and return that with your check written to Sisterhood of Kol Ami. You don’t write checks? No problem; Mazelgrams can be charged to your account at Kol Ami. Mazelgrams are $1.25 each, which includes postage. You also have the option to send greetings to the entire congrega-

tion for only $118! That is less than 30 cents per greeting. You can even select a greeting for your Mazelgrams when ordering.

By supporting Mazelgrams, you take care of purchasing, writing, addressing, and mailing out all those cards in one easy step. You also support Kol Ami Sisterhood’s ability to carry out so many of the things we do for the synagogue throughout the year, including most of the Oneg Shabbats and Kiddush Luncheons, religious school activities, and support of the Kol Ami community.

Remember to watch the deadline of Friday, September 20, 2019 and be sure to get your Mazelgrams order in early! Look for your Mazelgram order form in the mail. Send all Mazelgrams to Sisterhood, c/o Congregation Kol Ami. Order forms for Mazelgrams are also available in the office.

Watch for Your Mazelgrams!

Sisterhood Needle Workers meet weekly, every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Jaffe Board Room. It is open to everyone and provides crafters an opportunity to social-ize, exchange information, and learn new techniques.

One of the current charity projects the group participates in is Warming the World, a local nonprofit organization that provides hats to newborns around the world. Hats can be knitted or cro-cheted; however, many of our group prefer to use a circular loom. Last year, the organization sent hats to six states (IL, TN, MS, AL, FL and MN), Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Brazil, Iceland, Guam, Burundi, Somaliland, the American Heart Association, several organizations that help mothers worldwide, and one organization that helps babies locally.

For information about the Sisterhood Needlework Group or contributing to Warming the World, contact Carol Tarica at [email protected].

“How are you… today?” This is what I’ve been asking people – namely my brothers and sisters at Kol Ami – as well as myself, on an almost daily basis

since the unexpected and untimely passing of our beloved friend, brother, col-league and (for many) men-tor, Mike Korenvaes (z”l). No matter who I ask among those who knew him, the responses I’ve been getting include, “Not good,” “It’s been really hard,” and “I’ve been better.” Sometimes there is no verbal response at all, only silence and a solemn look, something in their eyes that simply conveys that “there are no words.” Like all of you who knew Mike personally, I was shocked beyond belief and momentarily speechless when I learned that Mike passed away on Saturday, August 3rd (the 2nd of Av), 2019, unexpectedly, while resting at home after a wonderful vacation in North Carolina with his family. “Mike? Mike Korenvaes? Are you sure?,” I asked incredulously. “No, it can’t be!” I’ve been struggling to accept the fact that one of the greatest guys I’ve ever had the honor and pleasure of knowing and working with, and one of the first people I think of when I hear the word mensch, is gone. He was one of the

healthiest and most physically fit, and vibrant men of his age I’ve ever known. Mike was an avid runner and competed in many races and marathons. He never smoked, didn’t drink alcohol (or even coffee!) and he went to bed early almost

every night so that he could get up at 4:00 a.m. to run and then begin another productive and goal-focused day. How is it possible that someone like Mike could be gone so much before his time? Why?

Kol Ami Brotherhood (cont’d)

How do we go on?

I’ve been struggling emotionally to cope with the shock of Mike’s passing, feeling his absence whenever I enter our shul (especially the front office, where he spent so much of his time on a daily basis serving our synagogue community), and seeing the sorrow, grief, and pro-found sense of loss in the faces of every- one who knew, worked with, laughed with, and loved Mike. My heart is broken for his family as they mourn his passing: Cindy, his beloved wife of 44 years, his sons Drew and Bill, his daughter-in-law Melanie, his granddaughter (his princess) Claire, and his sister, brother, nieces and nephews. Needless to say, it has been more than very difficult. The words just feel empty and hollow, trying to convey the emotional impact, deep sadness, and profound loss we feel as his spiritual family and as a community in mourning. We will never be the same, yet we are not alone.

Normally, I would be sharing with you exciting news about our upcoming

programs and events. I would be ex-pressing my pride and sense of accom-plishment about our latest successes in our efforts to serve our congregation and strengthen our bonds of friendship as a Brotherhood. Normally, I would be promoting the Brotherhood and encour-aging all of you to participate and to get involved. (Don’t worry, you can count on me, along with my fellow Brother-hood Board members, to continue to do so.) But not today. Instead, today I find and offer comfort in the belief that through our mutual support and caring for one another, our reminiscences and cherished memories of Mike, and our deep desire to honor and memorialize him, HaShem will hold us up, comfort us, and give us the strength and courage to go on, despite how our loss and grief has changed us as individuals and as a community. With time, G-d will heal us. That said, I believe that we must do more. We must open our eyes, hearts, and minds to feel inspired by the incred-ible person that Mike was, and to recog-nize and appreciate the legacy of service,

dedication, integrity, generosity, and caring for his Kol Ami family that he leaves behind. We must come together, to support one another, to serve one another, and to love and nurture our Kehillah Kadoshah as Mike always did, and as he would want us to do.

As we approach Rosh Hashanah, the Day of Remembrance, we remember Mike and the ideals that he stood for. We remember what we could have done, the missed opportunities we had to help out, to volunteer, to participate, and to do more. And on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, through introspection, repentance, and Teshuvah, we commit ourselves to make amends, to do better, to try harder, and to be more of who Mike wanted us to be, who HaShem calls us to be. This year, especially during these High Holy Days, we find inspiration and motivation to “Be Like Mike.”

May his memory always be for a blessing.

L’shalom, in brotherhood, Mario

Hayden Cross is an 8th grader at Ben Hill Middle School and Kol Yeladim Religious School. Hayden’s family just moved back to Tampa from a few years in Orlando. Hayden’s hobbies include coin collecting, Boy Scouts, and making

robots, and he also really enjoys going camping. Hayden says he is most proud of becoming a patrol leader in his Boy Scout troop.

Hayden explains,“The person who really inspires me is my dad, because he works hard so that my sisters and I can have a great life.” As part of his future plans for that great life, Hayden says, “In ten years, I see myself finishing up college and getting my dream job as a Physical Cosmologist and working for NASA.”

Hayden’s favorite holiday is Passover, because “I get to see a lot of friends and family I don’t get to see very often.” Many of those friends and family will be coming to Tampa to help cele-brate Hayden’s Bar Mitzvah with him, from Virginia and other parts of Florida like Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Mazal tov to Hayden and his family!

Fall is here! My favorite time of year! Back to School fun for every-one…maybe more so for the parents, but fun was had by all. Kol Yeladim has been very

busy so far! We had an amazing opening day and Congregational Kick-Off event, and we jumped right back into the swing of things with school on Wednesday. Our B’nai Mitzvah class is also off to a great start with a group meeting with Rabbi Blatt, parents, and students focused on understanding the importance and expec-tations as an upcoming B’nai Mitzvah!

Kids’ KonnectionsBy Jennifer Halls, Education Director

We are looking forward to our new B’nai Mitzvah Chair, Ellen Ehrenpreis, planning even more events to honor and make this year a special one for our 7th grade class!

This month we have some exciting pro-grams that we can’t wait to share with our students! We will be working on fam-ily tree projects in some of our classes, as well as several High Holiday activities and studies in all of our classes. We are thrilled to bring back our Challah Baking with Sisterhood again this year. A big thanks to Jody Rappaport for volunteering to provide her recipe and her skills to make the most delicious challah.

We will also be starting our first Academy classes this month! I am honored to be able to take what I have learned while I was in Israel and teach the 8th & 9th grade class! We will be focusing on the family and doing research on Biblical family trees and our own family trees. We are also going to have our Academy classes help film our monthly “What’s Happening at Kol Yeladim” YouTube show. We are going to name the program after the students have had the opportunity to give their input! Rabbi Blatt is looking forward to working with our 10th-12th graders this year! We know it will be a new and reinvigorated Academy at Kol Ami!

And last but not least, we need High Holiday Help!!! We are always looking for volunteers to help with snack time for all the kids during the High Holiday Youth Services. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Debbie Newhouse, our School Board Chair. Our first day and second day of Rosh Hashanah is Monday, 9/30 and Tuesday, 10/1, so if you are able to help, thank you in advance!

I look forward to another amazing year here at Kol Yeladim.

For those of you who may not know, my name is Abby Salem-Goldman, and it is my great pleasure to serve as your Youth Director this year! Jennifer Cohen will be returning as your Youth Advisor for all groups, and we are very excited for the amazing programs we have planned this year!

If the Congregational Open House Kick-Off was any sort of indication, we are going to have a blast together this year, with holiday parties, playtime, Jewish learning, volunteering, and lots of silly fun! We enjoyed a wonderful Bubble Magic Show perfor-mance by Blaise Ryndes and raised $105 at our annual USY Car Wash! Thank you to all who were able to attend our Kick-Off event! It was so nice to see so many returning faces at the Open House, and I look forward to seeing – and meeting – so many more of you throughout the year!

At this time, I invite you all to register to be a member of our Kol Ami Youth Groups! Registration can be online at: https://www.kolami.org/2019-2020-youth-group-application. Register by September 8th to receive a 5% discount! Families
