Things to Know at AHSHow do I Manage Attendance?Leave early for an appointment• Call the attendance line at 503-356-2762. We appreciate your

help in keeping students in class. Last year we celebrated our 90% attendance rate. Medical, dental or professional appointments require verification from the provider to be excused. Your student may turn in the appointment verification the following day. All doctors, dentists and court offices are able to provide you with a note.

Go home when I feel sick• Students should get a pass from their teacher to go to the

health room. The office staff will call parents for a ride home. Unfortunately, we do not have a nurse on campus. The Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center is located at Beaverton High School 503-356-3985.

Pre-arrange an extended absence• A blue pre-arranged absence form can be found outside

the counseling office. It should be signed by teachers, parent and counselor. Turn the form into attendance.

Call in for a whole day for illness• Call the attendance line at 503-356-2762. Kandra Luna is

our new attendance secretary.

Yearbook Photo v.s. FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy ActAs part of the verification of enrollment papers parents are asked to sign a FERPA notification. New this year, the form had opt out boxes for directory and photograph information. This year close to 100 parents opted out of the photograph option. In the past, we’ve had less than one student per year opt out. We think there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding regarding the use of student photos.

At AHS we strive to highlight our student’s victories and achievements. Many times we do this through school magazines, websites, social media, the yearbook, newsletters and the mainstream media. If you have checked the opt out box, your student will not be able to participate in those events. A FERPA form is attached to this newsletter mailing. Please reconsider allowing your student to participate in these aspects of high school life by turning in a new form. Your yearbook and Aloha staff thank you!

Chrome Books, Digital Resources and October 17th DeadlineYour AHS technical crew has trained and distributed Chromebooks to the 1600+ Warriors who turned in their Chromebook insurance forms and their Digital Resource forms. We have a warning for those 400 students who have not turned in their Digital Resource form. Without that form, you cannot have access to Beaverton School District digital resources; No internet, No email, No Chromebook. Students are not required to have a Chromebook but they do need to get the Digitial Resource form turned in by October 17th or the District will disconnect their access. We hope that students are getting used to the machines, enjoying the technology and making great academic progress. Please get your forms turned in to the office!

Aloha Theatre take Southern Oregon Inspiration for their, Twelve Angry Jurors

Aloha Theatre students visited the Ashland Shakespeare Festival and drew inspiration for their upcoming show, Twelve Angry Jurors. The students saw, "Hamlet" in the Elizabethan Theater and "Twelfth Night" at the Bommer. They were lucky to meet and talk to Oregon Shakespearean Festival

actor Rodney Gardiner. The young thespians got a taste of college life by staying and touring Southern Oregon University.

12 Angry Jurors performances are November 3-5 and 12th. See the AHS website for ticket details. Twelve Angry Jurors is an adaptation of 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose. It follows the closing arguments in a murder trial, the twelve members of the jury must deliberate life or death of the accused, an inner-city teen. As the sequestered jury attempt to reach a unanimous decision, one member unsettles the delicate process that will decide the accused’s fate.

Welcome and WillkommenOur Ms. Freeborn and her German classes have been hosting 15 students and their teachers from Branschweig Germany for the past two weeks. The students enjoyed a walking tour of Portland, the Oregon Historical Society, Tillamook Forest Center, Ecola State Park, Cannon beach, Pacific University and the Oregon Zoo. While at the zoo both American and German students worked on a photography and identification project. Use your QR reader on the code below to see their polar bear project. Our Aloha students spent two weeks in Germany this summer seeing the sights with these same students and their teachers.

News from the District

Early Release/Teacher Collaboration for 2016-19The Beaverton School District and the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) ratified a new contract for 2016-2019. The agreement provides students with more full weeks of school and improves overall continuity for learning. Another important element of the agreement is providing teacher collaboration and professional development time to address gaps in student achievement and improve teacher practice.  Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, the District will implement a 90-minute  early release  on Wednesday afternoons to allow  teachers time  to  collaborate  and participate in professional development opportunities. Over the course of the next three years, nine additional student contact days will be added to the District calendar.  • 2016-2017: Add 2 student contact days • 2017-2018: Convert 4 staff development days to

student contact days • 2018-2019: Add 3 student contact days

Why Take the PSAT? Six Good Reasons

• Open the door to college. The PSAT may be a student’s first official step on the road to college. It can prompt some to consider college as an option and others to jump-start their search.

• To practice for the SAT. On average, those who take the PSAT earn higher scores on the SAT than those who don’t. One reason: The tests have the same formats, directions, sample questions, and question types.

• To earn scholarships and academic recognition. By taking the test, juniors may be eligible to enter National Merit Scholarship competitions.

• To begin the college search. The Student Search Service gives PSAT test takers the option to voluntarily place their names in a pool of college-bound students interested in receiving admission and financial aid information from certified colleges, universities, and scholarship agencies.

• Compare academic skills compare with other college-bound students. PSAT test results will give students a chance to compare their skills with their peers.

• To help direct a learning plan for high school. Test results in the PSAT Score Report give students feedback on their college-related verbal, math and writing skills. Students can use this information to fine-tune course selections, which will get them ready for college-level work.

For more information, visitwww.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about

The PSAT will be offered at Aloha High School on Wednesday, October 19th. Sophomores and

juniors are welcome to register by paying the $25 registration fee to the bookkeeper in the main office. Don’t delay! Limited seats available!

Counseling

Money and Slurpees for SeniorsAre you a senior? Do you need help paying for college? Do you like slurpees? If you answered yes to any of these

questions, then get out your planner.  The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, opens on October 1st and Mrs. Brennan and Ms. Bondra are challenging all seniors to fill it out by the end of October. Unsure what the FAFSA is or how to fill it out? There will be a FAFSA workshop during tutorial in

the CCC on October 4th and 6th. Just bring your chrome book and have your social security number memorized. The first 130 seniors that can prove they have completed their FAFSA will receive a coupon for a FREE 7/11 Slurpee!
