Creative Generation
Last week I wrote about our students’ participation in
Creative Generation. This week I can say that we took part
and our Senior Choir achieved the gold award. We will now
wait to see if the adjudicator will put our choir forward for
the next level of performance competition. Congratulations to
all our students and to their teacher, Mr Warryn James. I
would also like to thank our parent volunteer, Mrs Sophie
Hills for her accompaniment at many rehearsals and at the
performance itself.
New Parent Information Sessions
Information sessions were held this week for parents who
might be considering sending their children here in 2018. It
was great to see so many people here. Parents were advised
that last year for prep, we were only able to take students
from our enrolment catchment area. There simply was no
capacity for the enrolment of any students from outside our
area. This is becoming increasing the case for the rest of the
school.
It is difficult to tell whether we will have vacancies next year
for prep. For parents who are outside catchment or who do
not have other children who will be attending in 2018, it
would be a very good idea to get names on a waiting list as
soon as possible. If we do go to that list to fill vacancies, the
system we use is chronological in that we will contact
prospective parents beginning with who registered first.
In talking to parents at this week’s meetings, I mentioned
the things that make our school distinctive. I have provided a
brief summary below.
We commit to our motto of Striving to Excel where we
define excellence as being the best we can be in terms
of academic, cultural and sporting pursuits as well as in
being positive citizens of the school.
Our early literacy program for Prep to Year 2 is giving
us results of which we are very proud. We will be
putting a paper forward with our partners at Griffith
University for presentation at upcoming conferences of
teachers and principals.
Philosophy is providing a great thinking and problem
solving framework for our school that will be of great
benefit for all students whether they continue it at
Cavendish Road High or not.

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL CONT’D
Our Year 3 to Year 6 program is still new but already we are getting good results. Its main
purpose is the teaching of reading through the explicit attention paid to:
Reading comprehension
Fluency
Vocabulary and
Guided Reading
Our Asian focus is unique from the point of view of being supported by language instruction and
cross curriculum applications. This is, of course, all supported by the amazing relationship that
we have with our sister school, Otemon Gakuin Elementary in Osaka.

Creative Generation Voices 2017 Celebrating Holland Park’s State School Senior Choir
Creative Generation Voices is Education Queensland’s biannual Choral Festival and Competition.
Creative Generation Voices is run by Regional Music coordinators for their regions and continues to
showcase the state’s best state school choirs and is a celebration of the wonderful work being done
by music teachers, choral directors and students across the state.
On Tuesday 16 May Holland Park State School senior choir attended Creative Generation Voices at
Coorparoo Secondary College accompanied by Mr James.
The choir performed the following three items:
I’ll tell Ma, a traditional Irish tune.
May it Be composed by Enya
Firefly composed by Andy Beck
The senior choir was awarded a Gold certificate for their
Showcase Performance in recognition of their excellence and
commitment. Congratulations to all members of the senior choir.
Special thanks to all parents who came to the performance we
wish to acknowledge Sophie Hills the accompanist who played for the senior choir. Thank you Mrs
Hills. Congratulations to our talented music specialist Mr James for his dedication to the music pro-
gram at Holland Park State School.
Philosophy Training at Holland Park State School
On Thursday 18 May year one and year five teachers participated in day 2 of level one training here
at Holland Park State School
This training was facilitated by our thinking coach Desley Alexion and Selina Blanchfield. We thank
them for their professional preparation for this day 2 training.
Gina Black berry from Griffith University who is helping lead our action research in Philosophy
also attended this training day and was very impressed with the professional learning that took
place.
Teachers were given the opportunity to reflect on their first day of training with meaningful
conversation. They engaged in more inquiry skills and also engaged in how to develop reasoning
when conducting a community of inquiry with their students. Teachers engaged with a number of
analogies and created a questioning framework to consider with their students.

QParents if you haven’t already registered. This
will be the only way to view student report

school, i.e. advising the office of any absences,
changing addresses, medical conditions,

This week at Cav Road Science club—A whole
new world under a microscope
A Dutch tradesman and scientist, Anton Van
Leeuwenhoek made the first ever microscope.
Using it he discovered living things so small that
they cannot be seen by the naked eye which he
called ‘little beasties’. They are called
microorganisms are everywhere, on the couch,
on your bead and even in the bath. There are
many types of microorganisms all in various col-
ours and sizes examples of these
are amoebae, protozoa (these
two are made of just one cell),
daphnia and gastrotrichs. Many
microorganisms are harmless but
though they lack in size some
can make you very sick.
CAV ROAD SCIENCE CLUB
During the class we examined a drop of pond
water under the microscope and daw a great
variety of weird and wonderful microorganisms,
one group even had an incredible looking
creature it was blue with a tail like a tadpole’s
we watched it swim around eat other
microorganisms. I think that was the highlight
of the lesson.

PEER MEDIATORS
Twenty-three volunteer students in grade
six recently attended three lunch-time training
sessions to learn how to help younger children
solve conflicts on the playground.
These students will play a crucial role in keeping
our school safe and friendly, and in the process,
they are attaining valuable life skills in active
listening, compromise, assertive communication
and leadership.
The process undertaken by these mediators in-
volves helping the pupils involved to cool down,
listen to one another's perspective on what has
happened, to brainstorm solutions, and to agree
on a way forward.
In pairs or trios, peer mediators wear a bright
yellow vest and patrol the oval in search of peo-
ple who may need their assistance. They do one
rostered shift per fortnight, and have also visit-
ed classes and presented on assembly so that
their peers know who they are and what service
they are offering.
Congratulations to the following students on
their commitment to such a pivotal school pro-
gram:
Branden 6JC, Spencer 6SE, Mitchell 6JC, Elijah
6SE, Alex 6SE, Max 6SE, Luke 6KD, Camila 6SE,
Hazel 6JC, Jaida 6JC, Scarlett 6KD, Ruby 6SE,
Georgia 6SE, Tia 6SE, Emma 6SE, Isabelle 6SE,
Ella 6SE, Charli 6SE, Rhianna 6JC, Aki 6KD,
Corina 6KD, Lara 6KD, Priya 6JC, and Ruby 6KD.
We look forward to enjoying the many positive
outcomes of this program, including (but not
limited to):
a reduction in scenarios where students
can't find friends to play with at playtime,
