As I write this note it is safe to say that winter has finally arrived…perhaps this seasonably cold weather will finally give all of us allergy sufferers some relief…we can only hope! As business and community leaders, we start each New Year with optimism and dreams of new beginnings. These feelings are quickly tempered by a strong dose of reality. “An optimist builds castles in the air. A dreamer lives there. A realist collects the rent from both of them” - Barbara Johnson Daily Splashes of Joy Given this, I think it is important at the start of each year for each of us to reflect on our role as “leaders” and to evaluate what challenges we will face as we lead our organizations to continuously improve and move forward. The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. – Max DePree The Art of Leadership The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. – Albert Einstein One of the challenges that all leaders invariably face is how to guide an organization through the physical and cultural changes that must take place in order for the enterprise to survive. Today's business world is highly competitive and we need to be able to quickly adapt to the needs of a rapidly changing world. Resistance to change is a dead-end street...for you and the organization. Customers are not only demanding excellent service, they are also demanding more. If you do not supply it, your competitors will. Organizations are reshaping themselves to change quickly in order to meet the needs of their customers. The organization's top leaders know they cannot throw money at every problem and that they need highly committed and flexible workers. As a leader, you need to emphasize action to make the change as quickly and smoothly as possible. Leaders can help the change process by changing their employees' attitude from avoidance into acceptance. This is often best accomplished by changing avoidance questions and statements into acceptance questions: From "Why?" to "What new opportunities will this provide?" -- When they ask "why," focus on the benefits that the change will provide them and the organization. Do NOT feel uncomfortable if you are feeling hesitation about the change too...you are also human. By spelling out the benefits, you will not only comfort them, but help to convince yourself too. From "How will this affect me?" to "What problems will this solve?" -- Anything that prevents something from being better is a problem. Let them know what the problem is and how they will be part of the solution. From "We do not do it this way." to "What would it look like?" -- Show them, provide plenty of explanations and compassion, and get your team to ask and answer questions. From "When will this change be over so we can get back to work?" to "What can I do to help?" -- Get them involved in implementing the change. Help them to become part of it. From "Who is doing this to us?" to "Who can help us?" -- Focus on the challenges that must be overcome. Ensure that you enlist help from other departments and colleagues. In 1951, renowned MIT social scientist Kurt Lewin theorized that there are three stages to change: Unfreezing --Old ideals and processes must be tossed aside so that new ones may be learned. Often, getting rid of the old processes is just as difficult as learning new ones due to the power of habits. Just as a teacher erases the old lessons off the chalkboard before beginning a new lesson, so must a leader help to clear out the old practices before beginning the new. During this part of the process you need to provide just a little bit of coaching as they are unlearning not learning and a lot of cheerleading (emotional support) to break the old habits. Changing: The steps to the new ideals are learned by practicing: What I hear, I forget, What I see, I remember, What I do, I understand --Kung Fu Tzu Refreezing: The new processes are now accepted. What has been learned is now being practiced on the job. Just a little bit of coaching is required and a lot of cheerleading is needed to set up the next change process...remember it is continuous improvement! Dear Friends, Happy New Year! successful After Hours Networking Event for the SMCC with over 50 in attendance! Thank you to Kathleen Zimmer, Kathie Adams and friendly staff

for providing a great and fun venue! It was great to see so many members and prospective members in attendance.

Nicholas Incolla of Mileto located at 406 Higgins Avenue in Brielle prepared a beautiful and delicious spread with enough for all in attendance. Manasquan Savings Bank and the SMCC donated gifts to raffle to the many in attendance.

who has also served on the SMCC Board of Directors. Both Joe and Drew are active in Chamber Committees and add to the value of the SMCC.

The SMCC Osprey Committee chose the nominees. A cocktail reception was held at Connolly Station in Belmar on September 13th to introduce all nominees to the SMCC members. The membership then voted for their choice in each category. All nominees were presented with a Proclamation at the Awards Dinner from Assemblyman Sean Kean (R-11) and a gift from the SMCC. The winners were also awarded with a beautiful statue of an Osprey.

Also awarded that evening were R.J. Furlong of R.J. Furlong & Company Clothier and Rachel Rogers of inVisual New Media Design who was the Chair of the Osprey Committee. R.J. Furlong was awarded as the Emeritus Director of the SMCC Board of Directors for his over 18 years of service on the board of the SMCC. Rachel Rogers was presented with an award to acknowledge her accomplishment in referring the most new members to the SMCC for 2006.

This marked the last year for the SMCC’s dinner to be held at the beautiful Barclay as they are closing in July of 2007. This was the 18th year that the Barclay has hosted our Osprey Awards Dinner. The Barclay always provided the perfect venue, with excellent service and food.

The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) held their 21st Annual Golden Osprey Awards Dinner & Masquerade Ball at the Barclay in Belmar. It was the first Masquerade Ball ever to be held at The Barclay. Colorful masks with feathers and some with glitter were bountiful that evening. The SMCC awards members each year for Outstanding Community Service, Outstanding Business, Outstanding Chamber Service and an Aspiring Youth Award presented to a local high school student recognized for their community service, academic excellence and extracurricular activities.

The Outstanding Business Award was presented to Diane Turton Realtors. Diane has been in the real estate business for 40 years and 2006 marks an anniversary for the company in celebrating its 20th year. The first Diane Turton Realtors office was opened in Bay Head, NJ in 1986. There are over 500 sales associates employed by the company and 2005 closed with over $1 Billion in sales volume. There were two other nominees in this category, The Barclay and The Lakewood BlueClaws.

The Community Service award was presented to Peter Brown, President of Manasquan Savings Bank. Peter serves as the Trustee for the Wall Foundation for Education Excellence; Manasquan High School Academy of Finance; Director and Treasurer of M.O.D.C.; past Vice President and Director of the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce; Director and Past President of the Spring Lake-Brielle Rotary as well as assistant coach of his children with the Wall Soccer Club and South Wall Little League. Peter and his family have lived in Wall for the past 15 years. The other nominees for this award were Charles A. Spitz AIA, NCARB; Timothy and Matthew Harmon of the Boathouse and 507 Main; and Doug Sjonvall of Greater Media NJ/WRAT 95.9.

The Aspiring Youth Award was presented to Jennifer Bassett of Wall High School. Jennifer is in the top 17 percent of her class. Her participation in extracurricular activities involves helping others through the Interact Club by fundraising for cancer research and toy drives for the underprivileged. She is currently teaching a dance class for inner city children. Through SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) she has helped raise money for art supplies and for anti-substance abuse programs. She has also helped collect eyeglasses for the needy. Jennifer has done much community service over the years with her dad who works for the Salvation Army. Other nominees in this category were Corey Sherlock, a senior at Wall High School and Jordan Drayton, a 2006 graduate of Academy Charter High School. These students are exemplary and all deserved to be honored.

The Chamber Service Award was presented to Peggy Berry, 1st Vice President of the SMCC. Peggy’s energy and involvement in Chamber Committees has played a big role in the Chamber’s success and growth. Other nominees in this category were Joe Stroin of RPG Business Solutions who is the SMCC President and Drew Cowley of Cowley’s Termite & Pest Control,

PNC BANK HOLDS AFTER HOURS EVENT

PNC Bank of Spring Lake Heights held an After Hours Networking Event on Wednesday, December 6 at their 405 Highway 71 location in Spring Lake Heights. It was a great event and a great turnout for networking. The lobby was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Thank you to Dorothy Chickara, Tina Clark and their staff for providing a roomy, comfortable and friendly atmosphere. PNC donated generous gifts to raffle to the attendees and we thank them for their generosity.

The appetizers were prepared by Spring Lake Manor in Spring Lake and were delicious and plentiful. Thank you to the wait staff and bartender, Christine for their great service!

SMCC HOLDS NEW MEMBER LUNCHEON AT XANADU AT WALL

On October 12, the SMCC Ambassador Committee along with the Board of Directors held a new member luncheon at the beautiful offices of Xanadu at Wall. Thank you to Laura Howard and Nancy Salch for providing such a beautiful venue. The new members were introduced to the Board of Directors and Ambassador Committee members and given an overview of what the SMCC is all about and what is has to offer to them and their businesses. They were then able to ask questions in a relaxing and informal atmosphere.

The Porch in Spring Lake Heights provided the delicious buffet lunch and dessert and coffee were compliments of Nancy Salch and Laura Howard of Xanadu. Thank you to Jim Wasas of CMSC for his donation of The Spirit of Liberty and Espiritu Del Ecuador to raffle to our new members.

United Way of Monmouth County recently assisted in the distribution of 50 food boxes to three local food pantries. The food boxes were a donation made by the NJ Natural Gas Co, Wall. They also donated food boxes to several other agencies in Ocean and Morris counties. Over the past several years the Gas Company has donated hundreds of food boxes to the needy through organizations like the United Way.

The agencies receiving the boxes in Monmouth County included the Bradley Beach Food Pantry, which assists clients from Bradley, Neptune, Asbury Park, Avon, Ocean Grove and some sections of Belmar, St. Ann’s Project Paul providing service to the Bayshore Area and the Samaritan Center, which serves the Englishtown-Freehold area. Each box was filled with a Dinty Moore Stew, instant potatoes, stuffing, Bisquick, Lipton pasta side dishes, Swiss Miss hot cocoa, Duncan Hines brownie mix, canned green beans and carrots, instant oatmeal, microwave popcorn and candies. The food was purchased by the Gas Company and packaged by the company’s employees who volunteered their time. Each box holds enough food to feed a family of four. United Way coordinated the distribution assisting a total of 50 families.

NJNG and the United Way have had a long partnership beginning back in 1967 when the agency found a home within the Gas Co in Asbury Park. The generosity of the Gas Company and its employees is a true example of community partnership and caring. United Way of Monmouth County is a leader in the community, building coalitions, solving problems and acting as an advocate. We raise funds through a variety of campaigns, leadership giving, direct mail, special events and marketing efforts. And we invest these financial and human resources to produce results that meet our community’s needs. For more information about the United Way or the services it provides, call 732-938-5988.

The beginning of the year is when we set goals for ourselves and our businesses; however, what we sometimes overlook is creating a plan to achieve them. The Women in Business Council will be meeting on January 31, 6:00 p.m. at the Chamber office to tackle the topic of “Goal-setting and Planning”. As women business-owners and key decision makers in our companies, we face unique challenges in pursuit of our goals. The Women in Business Council intend to tackle these issues through short presentations by subject matter experts and peer discussions. Write your goals down and be prepared to share them with the group. If you haven’t finalized your goals, we will help you come up with some good ones! During this first meeting, the Women in Business Council will create a program addressing all the participants’ goals and topics of interest. We invite ALL women business owners and key decision makers who are truly interested in moving their businesses forward.

The Majestic Hotel offered a beautiful setting for our November General Membership Luncheon. Valerie Hegarty, the owner of The Majestic Hotel allowed us to tour the picturesque hotel and the elegant rooms

with ocean views. Each room offers a kitchen, sitting room and private bath. The Oceania Restaurant located in the Majestic Hotel is a full service facility catering to the public and guests. Troy of the Oceania Restaurant catered our luncheon event with a delicious buffet and a professional staff. Theresa Murphy and Kristine Novakowski of Press Communications, 107.1 The Breeze were our guest speakers. For over 20 years Theresa Murphy has worked in advertising and marketing. She has working experience in direct mail, point of purchase materials, desktop publishing, and web based software and technology. For the last four years she has worked in broadcast media

representing Press Communications. Kristine Novakowski has been working in the broadcast industry for over 13 years and has called Press Communications her home for the last seven years. Kristine also represented NJ 101.5 FM previously owned by Press Communications and worked overseas for Virgin Radio in London. Theresa and Kristine stressed the importance of using all media types for advertising and demonstrated how radio helps when added to the mix. The attendees were given the opportunity to view ads from a newspaper in a PowerPoint presentation and then allowed to hear radio announcements and advertising clips. When asked to recall the newspaper ads and radio announcements, more were able to recall a much higher percentage of the radio ads. The attendees with the best recall received prizes and handouts as part of this interactive

presentation. Theresa explained that the results of four test groups with 100 people in each group found that replacing two radio ads for one of two TV ads increased unaided brand recall by 34% and replacing two radio ads for one of two newspaper ads almost tripled unaided brand recall. Theresa and Kristine stressed that integrating radio increases consumer impact without increasing costs. It was a very informative and interesting presentation.

A special welcome was extended to our new members at the start of our meeting. Each member was given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their business to the SMCC. The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce along with the help of Santa Claus delivered teddy bears to the children at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and the Meridian Early Childhood Education Center. A Holiday Gala was held at Barlow Flower Farm in Sea Girt where members of the Chamber brought their donated teddy bears. Thank you to Andrea McKelvey of JSUMC for her assistance

in distributing teddy bears to all of the children in the hospital. Maureen Reilly, Corporate Director and Cheryl Ashcroft, Supervisor of the Meridian Early Childhood Education Center were nice enough to direct Santa to all of the dear children in their facility. There were many smiling faces. Thank you to all that donated teddy bears.

Barlow’s hosted the SMCC Holiday Gala on Thursday, December 14 at the beautiful Barlow Flower Farm at 1014 Sea Girt Avenue, Sea Girt. The setting

couldn’t have been more perfect as we were surrounded with fabulous poinsettias, holiday arrangements, lights and holiday decorations. The talented Mr. Richard Bellia and his beautiful voice added to the atmosphere with his merry holiday music. Our thanks to Leslie and Steve Barlow and all of the Barlow family and staff for making everyone comfortable with their friendly hospitality, festive greenhouse and for keeping Barlow’s open for holiday shopping. We appreciate the time and energy involved in hosting an event like this during the busy holiday season.

We were honored to have past teddy bear recipient Tanner Johnson and his mom, Kim Johnson attend our Holiday Gala. Kim wrote to the SMCC to thank us for the teddy bear Tanner received years ago while in Jersey Shore Medical Center. The bear brought much comfort to Tanner while he was sick. We are happy to report that Tanner is in remission and doing very well today. They were very gracious and donated a bear to this year’s teddy bear collection. We thank them both for their kindness.

Sincere thanks to Chris Ruisi of Action International for sponsoring our Holiday Gala and contributing his good wishes and advice for 2007. Chris will be our guest speaker in May. Be sure to attend the General Membership Meeting Luncheon on Tuesday, May 15th. Thank you to Sun National Bank for sponsoring this event and helping to make it a success. Conklin Marketing and Sales Co., Inc. also sponsored this event and supplied our guests with their delicious The Spirit of Liberty and Espiritu Del Ecuador liquors. It was a great treat for everyone.

We would also like to thank Claire French of the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, who took time out of her busy schedule to celebrate with us and officiate the induction of four board members: President, Joseph Stroin of HarborPoint Bancard; First Vice President, Peggy Berry of Valley National Bank; Second Vice President, Kristine Zulewski of Two River Community Bank; and Treasurer, Dana Gangemi of WayComm Consulting. We welcome Kristine and Dana as new officers of the SMCC and thank Joe and Peggy for accepting to serve the Chamber again for the year 2007. We also welcomed a new director to the board, Jim Dallas of Envirotactics. We thank Joe Sharp of All Is Sharp Photography who was on hand to take pictures of the ceremonies. Thank you to Drew’s Market in Spring Lake Heights who prepared the delicious buffet, which received many raves and Mrs. Field’s Cookies were a great ending to the feast and we thank Ralph Garrow for

that special treat. Thank you also to Karl Hagberg of Currents for the many theatre and dinner ticket raffles he donated to our event. They were a big hit. Donations of Teddy Bears were accepted that evening to benefit the children at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Thank you all for the adorable stuffed bears.
