1 gu August 2018, Volume 20, Issue 8 Message from the President Greetings! First of all, I want to thank all of our club members who volunteer throughout the year to work during our events to make them enjoyable and successful. For several club events this year, it appeared we would not have a sufficient number of workers to perform the activities required for a successful event, even just a few days prior to those events. When this was the case, it became necessary to make last minute phone calls and/or send e-mails to our members to recruit the needed number of workers. Most of the time, but not always, these last minute contacts yielded adequate staff to perform the required functions. When this was not the case, the events did not go nearly as smoothly as those for which an adequate number of workers were available. As you know, Ruth Ann circulates sheets at each monthly meeting asking for volunteers to sign up to help out during upcoming events. If an adequate number of volunteers sign up on these sheets, the events can be organized well ahead of time without requiring extra effort by those doing the planning. So, please use these sheets to indicate your willingness to assist with the activities necessary to ensure that our events run smoothly with adequate staff. I know that I have occasionally been hesitant to sign up because I was not sure if I had a conflicting commitment scheduled for the same date as one of our events. Most likely that has happened to you as well. So, if at all possible, please make an effort to review your personal calendars before or while attending our meeting to determine if you have scheduled events that would conflict with a club event. That will allow you to use our signup sheets at the meeting and, thus, make the job of those who are doing event planning for our club easier. Thanks for your help with this. See you at the meeting next Tuesday! Have been back in hospital twice since then and now am trying to get betterafter 7 days of feeling very, very bad. Take heart, Lou Ann, I think there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Prayers for former OSC member Ann Gregory on the passing of her dear husband, Dennis Gregory.Continued prayers for Noel Sheffield as he recuperates from his Carpal Tunnel surgery and wife Donna

Let’s Take a Drive to the Quaint Little Town of Floyd, VA!!

Activities Director: Thinking originally that we could do this earlier in the year but the weather didn’tcooperate so we are gonna give it a try now! Perfect time for a drive in the mountains!

On Saturday, September 1st, we will take a drive up Hwy. 8 to the quaint little town of Floyd, VA.Drive your Classics, if you can! Some of us have been there before but we have quite a few new memberssince then and this is such a fun drive and cool little town for everyone to experience.

Upon arrival, we will go to the Downtown area. The recommended first stop would be the Floyd CountryStore where, starting at Noon, they have their “Americana Afternoon’ from 12:00 – 3:00 pm. The music isvaried, but has the common thread of Americana, traditional acoustic music. Some of it is indigenous, including bluegrass, or the music of contemporary singer-songwriters; you might hear the blues, or some ofthe Celtic or African sounds that underpin our American folk traditions. And … this Country Store has lotsof good stuff to check out, too!

Saturday lunch at the Country Store is a special event. Pick up one of our homemade soups or sandwiches,or a plate of farm-fresh salad and find a table near the stage. (Don’t eat too much; reserve your appetite forthe Pine Tavern Restaurant later in the afternoon.) This is a free event.

Then you can wander this cool little mountain town and all of its unique shops until 4:30 pm and then wewill go to the Pine Tavern Restaurant, 611 Floyd Hwy N, just a short distance from the Downtown.

“The historic Pine Tavern was started in 1927, withold state Route 221 running behind the restaurant.Originally, the Pine Lodge served meals in theirlobby. The fare was similar to what you can find intoday’s Pine Tavern. Most of our recipes are fromMama Nell, my grandmother. These recipes weretested by me every Sunday for over 25 years in a small town, much like Floyd, in the shadow of thebeautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We hope that the same feeling of family, hospitality, history, and heritageis imparted to our guests.” –Reed Embrey

Family Style means sharing food as you would in your own home. Meats are served on platters andvegetables in bowls. Family style includes all the vegetables on the menu, it includes extra serving of meatsand vegetables if so desired. It includes your beverage and cobbler.

All meals come with Fried Chicken and one other meat for $15 per person, two other meats for $16, get allfour meats for $17 per person. Entrees: Fried Chicken / Country Ham / Roast Beef /Pulled Pork. Andserved with family style, Real Mashed Potatoes, Dumplings, Green Beans, Pinto Beans, Cole Slaw or Salad,Extra Vegetable or Fruit of the Day, Buttermilk Biscuits, Family Style Dessert, Homemade Fruit, ChocolateCobbler.

Sooo … with all that being said, we will meet in Walkertown at the shopping center at Hwy. 66 & 158 atthe BIG ICE MACHINE between Wendy’s & Sheetz, LEAVING at 9:30 AM. It will take us about 1 hr.45 min driving time and we will stop about mid way for a “pit stop.” Since we will be eating around 5:00pm, allowing for a leisurely meal, we should still be able to drive home before it gets dark.

PLEASE RSVP ASAP to me, Ruth Ann Ronchetti at … [email protected] … 336-817-6553.
