From the desk of the President & CEO
Greetings Members ~ Through my work with the Chamber, I meet a lot of people with a wide variety of interests and plans. I get to work with all types of businesses from startups to long-term companies that have been here for decades. With such a diverse portfolio of companies and people, each member needs something very different. They are all in different stages. We have members that live for Greeters and networking events, those that would rather meet one-to-one, or the members that are here for the advocacy we provide. We also have members that just support our efforts to build a stronger economy. To meet the needs of our members, we have to be very flexible. We craft each relationship with that member to what they need to be successful. Sometimes it is connecting them with one of our partners, whether it be the City, County, Small Business Development Center, Youth Pathways Partnership, SOREDI, Work-source, Business Oregon, or one of the many other partners with which we work. Other members partner with us for the numerous advertising and promotional opportunities we provide. With each member, we are building long term relationships, creating partnerships, building credibil-ity, and looking at the long-term outcomes. We are here for the long haul and I hope you are too! I have seen companies and individuals move into town, get really involved in the first few months, do everything and expect immediate results. If they don't receive results quick enough, they drop their member-ship and we never see them again. It is hard seeing companies do that; forgetting how important it is to build lasting relationships. I have lived my entire life in small communities. Growing up in a town of less than 100, relationships meant everything. Business is done word of mouth. I realize how important that is in Josephine County too! As the Chamber, we are here for you as members and we want to meet with you and build a relationship. Please reach out, we are here to help you. I invite you to stop by the office, call, email, or I can take you to coffee. I am also always open to new ideas. Stop in and say hi!

Pregnancy Care Center of Grants Pass has served Southern Oregon since 1988. To date, PCC has served
approximately 44,500 people, and our services continue to be offered 100% free of charge to all who need them. We carry out our mission of providing hope in the midst of pregnancy and sexual health de-cisions through several programs:• PCC’s medical center, where anyone who thinks they might be preg-nant can receive pregnancy testing, OB ultrasound, and consultation with a com-passionate, licensed nurse.• Pathways, where expecting moms and dads are equipped with knowl-edge, confidence, and material support as they prepare to deliver and parent a new baby.• Epic, a sexual health curriculum promoting abstinence, which reaches around 2,000 local middle and high school students each year.• Journey, a support group for any-one seeking healing from a past abortion.Volunteer roles at PCC involve a range of time commitments and training require-ments, but all are carried out by faithful, compassionate women and men. Volunteers in our medical center include nurses, radiologists, and a local physician who serves as medical director, as well as patient advocates who accom-pany and encourage women throughout their appointments. Volunteers in the Pathways program help lead classes, build relationship with our moms and dads, and help organize clothing and supplies in the Baby Boutique. Volunteers also take up an array of behind-the-scenes tasks in our office, including phone calls, data entry, and bottle preparation for our Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser. Larger groups of people come together to assemble several mailings throughout the year and provide help with setup, hospi-tality, and cleanup for our annual Gala. We are grateful for the over 300 women and men who shared 4,450 hours of their time with PCC in 2019! As a community-supported, 501c3 non-profit, financial gifts as well as donations of baby and maternity clothes and supplies are al-ways welcome. Give us a call or visit our website to learn more about how you can get involved!

GRANTS PASS – At their regular meeting Feb. 19, the Grants Pass City Council adopted a resolution awarding PKT Prop-erty Management a façade renovation grant in the amount of $5,000, and a building renovation grant in an amount up to $50,000. The two grants will be used by building owner Patricia Thoman to create studio apartments out of 1,300 square feet on the second floor of her building at 115 and 117 SW “G” St. in the Central Business District.
Known as the Blind George’s Building, the structure was built in 1900. The grant will be used for a design build sprinkler system connecting a fire line from the city’s water main to the front corner of the building.
“As the owner of several rental properties in Grants Pass, I am very aware there is a huge need for affordable housing. With this being said, smaller units could really help fill this need,” said Thoman in her application.
Funding for the grant comes through the city’s Building Reno-vation Loan and Grant Program approved by the city council in 2017 with a budget of $240,684. Remaining unencumbered funds are approximately $83,000.

The Tom Pearce Park playground was closed in early July 2019 due to the playground being deemed
unsafe. The wooden playground was built in March of 1990 and had deterio-rated passed its useful life. The decom-missioned playground was funded by efforts of local businesses and donated to “the Children of Josephine County”. The loss of the playground was devastating to many. The Josephine County Parks Department, with the help of the Josephine Parks and Recreation Foundation and the Grants Pass Kiwan-is, will be replacing the playground, but currently does not have any funds allo-cated to the project. Josephine County Parks is self-funded and does not re-ceive any tax dollars from the general fund. The current fundraising goal is
$150,000, but the total price could be up to $300,000 or more depending on the size of the playground, level of accessi-bility, and the number of play activities. The final playground design and budget will be determined by public feedback. Parks is looking for sponsors for the new playground. The sponsor-ship comes with benefits, such as name on the signage at the completed play-ground, recognition at the ribbon cut-ting ceremony and on Facebook, press release opportunity, Annual Day Use Passes, and more! Without the help of sponsorships and tax-deductible dona-tions for projects, like the Tom Pearce Playground, would not be possible.

Mid Rogue Imaging Center (MRIC) in Grants Pass is a nonprofit medical facility providing imaging at cost for the community. Grants and tax-deductible
contributions help us save patients as much as 70% on their tests. A pioneering concept, MRIC is not owned by physicians, an insurance company or a large corporate health care system. Our mission is to fill the ever-increas-ing health care needs of uninsured and underinsured pa-tients in Southern Oregon by providing greater access to diagnostic testing.
Diagnostic testing includes imaging scans of the body, such as X-ray, MRI, CT scan and ultrasound. Other tests offered include ankle-brachial index (ABI) that shows blood flow, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to measure bone mineral density, electrocardiogram (EKG) and in-home sleep studies. Even though the costs are lower, the equip-ment and certified technologists at MRIC are equal to any other imaging center. MRIC bills directly to all insurance providers, including Medicaid and Medicare, and accepts cash, check, or Care Credit as payment options.
For children with scoliosis, MRIC offers free exams, thanks to grants for the necessary equipment from the Four Way Community Foundation and Grants Pass Kiwanis Club. To have a scoliosis exam for a child, parents or guardians can simply ask their physician to send the request to MRIC. Whether it is an initial diagnostic test or annual checkup, we will provide it at no charge for children under 18.
MRIC gave over $1.3 million back to the community in ex-ams in 2019. For many, this means they can pay rent, put food on the table, repair their vehicle or purchase school supplies. When we hear from grateful parents that we have saved their families thousands of dollars for their children’s medical tests, we know we have renewed their belief that there can be ‘care’ in health care.

This worked great for the first few rentals, but quickly became a mess of receipts, poor record keeping, a failure to know who's rent is late, and forgetting what maintenance needed to be done when and where. Sound familiar? With a background in software development, he knew there had to be a landlord specific software solution which would tidy up his records and help him continue growing his rental empire. Alas -- after countless days of searching and reviewing software applications, none were up to the task. He went to work creating a fully featured property management software application - RentecDirect.

Many of my fellow chamber mem-bers know me as a volunteer ambas-sador with the Chamber of Com-merce and from my work with the library. Recently, I stepped into a new role with the library as ex-ecutive director for the Josephine Community Library Foundation. I am excited for the opportunity to continue supporting the vital role our public libraries play in the com-munity and start a new chapter of building libraries for generations to come.
Who is the library foundation? Josephine Community Library Foundation is a nonprofit organi-zation that raises funds to support special programs beyond the reach of the library’s regular tax-funded operating budget, such as capital improvement.
How we evolvedIn May 2017, voters approved the Josephine Community Library District. Now, under our new name, Josephine Community Library Foundation, in partnership with the library district, the foundation has taken on the responsibility of raising funds for new buildings in Grants Pass and Williams, and renovation of the Illinois Valley branch.
Building for the futureThe library foundation seeks to be sure that library users of all ages get what they want from their library — whether it’s the latest books, a cool and comfy teen room, up-to-date computers and fast Internet, or buildings and grounds that are safe and welcoming. The foundation also provides library card scholar-ships to children who live outside the library district.
Working in partnership with the library district, the foundation has an inspiring vision for new library buildings in Grants Pass and Wil-liams along with an expanded Il-linois Valley branch. These building projects will meet the needs of our community members for decades to come. Over the next several years, we hope that local champions will rally their communities to make this vision a reality.
