Executive Director’s ReportChris Murphy

management (letters of recommendation from a CWS that was directly involved in the training and from the program director) to sit for the CWS examination. This represents a wonderful benefit for residents in this category. The bottom line: Certification in wound management has many benefits and is something that all wound care clinicians should aspire to attain. I admire your commitment in having taken these steps. With the aging of baby boomers and the sharp rise in diabetes and obesity, it is likely that there will be a groundswell of patients with wounds and practitioners with a specialty in this area will be in great demand! That being said, I feel that the profession will expand and be considered a true medical specialty. This would include full time clinicians that have graduated from accredited wound management residencies and fellowships. I am pleased to report that some of these programs are already in place at major universities and hospitals around the country. As wound specialists who have attained certification I applaud your efforts and challenge you to continue honing your skills:

• Study, study, study!• Attend as many wound care seminars as you can • Subscribe to wound specialty journals such as Wounds;

Ostomy Wound Management, Advances in Skin and Wound, Wound Repair and Regeneration, and the Journal of Wound Care, among others.

• Most importantly, find a mentor! • Become a mentor!• Get involved in the profession; serve on wound care society

committees and take an active role in mentoring others• Consider the Masters in Wound Management at Cardiff

University, UK (predominately a web based format) or other wound related specialty degrees.

• Encourage your colleagues to consider becoming certified wound specialists

• The hospital is an important resource; serve on committees, affiliate with a wound care program

• Lecture to community groups such as your local chapter of the American Diabetes Association

• There is a growing need for wound care specialists; market your talents and keep learning! When I first opened my wound care practice, I wound make rounds at different times of the day; physicians are creatures of habit and the doctors that see patients at 6AM are not the same ones that round at 12 noon or 6PM.

• Network, network, network!• Begin researching and writing; posters and abstracts for major

wound meetings • Consider writing an article or presenting an unusual case in

a peer reviewed or trade journal: Your colleagues will take notice!

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Fraternally,

Dr. Robert Snyder, DPM, CWS, FCCWS, MSc(c)President, American Academy of Wound Management

DON’T FORGETRenewal Fees Reminder.

For questions or concerns, contact Trish Calamari, Director of Administration at 202-457-8408 or [email protected].

As the 2010 testing cycle comes to a close I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate of our newly Certified Wound Care Associates (CWCA), Certified Wound Specialists (CWS) and Certified Wound Specialist Physicians (CWSP). The AAWM remains the most credible and prestigious certifying bodies in the wound care community. The 2011 annual renewal invoices will be mailed in November and are due by January 31, 2011. A $50 late fee will be applied for all payments postmarked after January 31, 2011. As a reminder, you must demonstrate a minimum of six hours of continuing education in calendar year 2010 in the field of wound management as part of the annual renewal. The submission of continuing education units shall be made with the annual re-registration form and are subject to audit. The AAWM Board of Directors met in September and outlined a number of goals and objectives for calendar year 2011. Among the exciting initiatives for 2011 are:

• Establish a reserve account to ensure the long-term growth and stability of the AAWM.

• Target Long Term Care Nurses, Physical Therapists and the Veterans Administration for Certification in 2011.

• Appoint a committee to conduct a feasibility study on the development and implementation of establishing an AAWM Foundation to offer scholarships, the practice exam and other charitable functions.

Additionally, the Board amended the bylaws to include CWCA representation on the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Julie Rhodovi, CWCA, with American Medical Technologies for being elected to fill the CWCA position on the Board. Finally, the Board has approved a substantial marketing budget for 2011 which will allow for AAWM to continue to have a presence at industry conferences and target new market areas for wound certification. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire AAWM staff thank you for your continued support of AAWM and your commitment and dedication to competency assurance in wound care.

PTAOtherNurses Exam Questions: Always Needed!

The American Academy of Wound Management is challenging all diplomates to write at least one question for the Exam Committee for potential submission to the Board Certification Examination for Wound Management Professionals. Some guidelines for writing questions:1. They must be multiple-choice format.2. They must have four possible answers (with the correct answer

identified).3. They must have a referenced source with each question.4. They should be designed for participants to recall, understand,

apply or evaluate. AAWM is also looking to include case studies with photographs for future examinations. When submitting a photograph/digital image, the same question guidelines apply, as well as the following for photographs:1. Photographs/digital images may be in either color or black/white

(no Polaroids).2. If using a digital camera, a high-resolution setting produces

quality images.3. The area of interest should be clear and easily identifiable.4. Patient privacy must be respected; No names or identifying

information may be visible.5. If possible, a ruler (in cm or mm for scale purposes) should be

visible in the photograph. Please remember that all case studies and photographs/digital images become the property of the AAWM for use as determined by the AAWM. If you have a question or case study you feel would make a good addition to the examination, you may submit those to Sallyann Henry, Professional Testing Corporation, at [email protected]

CWS™Wound Care Center Opening in MeyersdaleBy Vicki [email protected] with permission of the Daily American

Marion Di Mauro, CWSWednesday, July 28, 2010 12:00 AM EDT

For some people, time doesn’t heal all wounds. An estimated 7 million Americans need specialized care to heal persistent wounds.

“We see many different reasons for chronic wounds: neuropathic ulcers, pressure ulcers, burns, traumatic, arterial — quite a few different types,” registered nurse Marion DiMauro said. “On their own, they won’t heal.”

DiMauro is program director of Meyersdale Medical Center’s new Wound Healing Center, which is opening Aug. 2 in Room 156 of the hospital’s upper floor. She is also director of Memorial Medical Center’s Wound Healing Center, where she has worked with hundreds of patients since the center was opened in 2000.

“Some patients have lived with wounds for years,” DiMauro said. “Our job is to heal them as quickly as possible so they have a better quality of life. Some people think it is just a way of life. I had one woman who had ulcers for many years and they healed in one month with the right treatment.”

The Wound Healing Center staff will work with the patient’s primary care physician to create a care plan. Once the underlying cause of the wound is determined, the staff uses treatment methods. Patients and their families learn how to prevent wounds from reoccurring. As an example, diabetics often suffer wounds on their feet. They have to learn how to avoid putting pressure on them.

Most wounds will heal with specialized treatment, but some need additional care or surgical intervention.

“Having the Wound Healing Center in Meyersdale is a great convenience to many patients who previously traveled to Johnstown for treatment,” Dr. James Gregory, center medical director, said in a written statement. “I hope that others with stubborn wounds will talk to their physicians about referrals into our program. Our team has many years of experience treating these wounds.”

Dr. Russell Dumire and nurse practitioner Patricia Eagleson will assist Gregory.

Aaron Thomas, hospital director of public relations, said a lot of people in Somerset County were traveling to Memorial’s Wound Healing Center.

“Why make people travel to Johnstown when we can have a center here?” he said. “We determined it would be effective to have a center in Meyersdale. That’s another way that Conemaugh Health System and Meyersdale Medical Center are working together to help patients who live here.”

Before opening the new center, Meyersdale passed a Pennsylvania Department of Health inspection and had all of its policies and procedures in order.

“I’m glad we’re able to offer this unique program to residents of this area,” Meyersdale Medical Center President Mary Libengood said. “This is just another example of how committed Meyersdale and the Conemaugh Health System are to the people of this region”

DiMauro is impressed with the Meyersdale Medical Center staff.

“The people here are exceptional,” she said. “They give excellent care and I can see their caring attitudes. People who live here are fortunate to have this hospital. The staff goes above and beyond in patient care.”

The Meyersdale center will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. If more hours are needed, the time will be adjusted. Patients should first check to see if their insurance requires a referral from their primary care physician, then call 534-6840 to make an appointment. The scheduling is handled through Memorial.

New Board Member StatementsJuan O. Bravo, MD, FACFP, FACCWS, FACHMIt is my belief that Wound Care is a growing field that requires people who are 100% committed to its growth and recognition. One of my goals is to help the academy achieve its goal of recognizing Wound Care as a medical specialty of its own. It is through research and good outcomes that we can achieve this. Although I am a relatively young physician, I believe my dedication and enthusiasm will encourage others to embrace this field with passion. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to lead the specialty of wound care to its rightful place in medicine and I look forward to many years of leadership and service.

Gayle Lindsey, PT, CWS, FACCWSIt is imperative to continue to promote the value of the CWS, CWCA, and CWSP certifications as the PREMIER wound certifications available to health care professionals. This is important in order to increase the number of individuals becoming certified through the AAWM and to increase recognition of the certifications by the public, industry, and healthcare communities. This is an ongoing goal of recognition expansion that can be achieved, in part, via continued integration of the AAWM into the social networking community via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. These media can be utilized to promote the AAWM as a stand alone, multidisciplinary organization striving to advance wound care. The implementation of a mentorship program for those wanting to sit for the CWS certification would also be a great service to offer to encourage individuals to become certified. I would also like to see an improvement in the testing experience.

Edward C. Mahoney, PT, DPT, CWSIn the eight years I have been practicing wound care I have been lucky enough to work with numerous people that fostered an environment conducive to my continued professional development. I will work to continue to foster the interdisciplinary approach to wound care that was so instrumental in my development. I would also like to continue the work that has already been done to encourage practitioners to obtain, and maintain, their CWS credentials because it sets a standard to ensure that we, as a wound care community, provide the best care possible. Julie Rhodovi, CWCADuring my tenure, I would like to see the AAWM continue its innovative initiatives that allow an interdisciplinary approach to the wound care arena. With the several different aspects of wound care, providing the approaches brought in by several disciplines equals a better performance and overall team approach to wound healing.

BRAWLEY — Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District was recently granted the Robert Warriner III, M.D., Center of Excellence Award to the Wound Care Center at PMHD in recognition of its high patient satisfaction rates, exceptional healing results, and outstanding clinical outcomes over the past 24 months. The honor was awarded by the center’s partner in wound healing, Diversified Clinical Services, the nation’s leading wound care management company. The award is named for Dr. Robert Warriner III, who is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. Leo Haggarty, president of the PMHD Board of Directors, said: “DCS brings our hospital’s Wound Care Center enormous resources and expertise, enabling us to meet the increasing need for specialized wound care. We are thrilled to accept this award and proud to offer this quality center to our community. We are doubly proud of a second recognition for our staff.” Non-healing wounds of the diabetic foot are considered one of the most significant complications of diabetes, representing a major worldwide medical, social and economic burden that greatly affects patient quality of life, according to a press release. To support the physician staff led by medical director Dr. Francisco Tirol, both Rosario Araguas, DPM, and Federico Hernandez, DPM, have recently joined the team to provide medical treatment. Of the award, Tirol said, “We’re honored. It’s a privilege to be part of a great collaborative effort between the hospital and Diversified Clinical Services. Together, we are able to heal patients in our community, letting them get back to living happy, healthy lives.”

THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE “Save A Leg, Save A Life”™ FoundationBy Desmond P. Bell, Jr., DPM, CWS, FACCWS

nity Outreach

While education is central to our Mission, Community Outreach is the essence of what makes “Save A Leg, Save A Life™ a true patient advocacy organization. The “SALSAL” annual National Meeting on September 2-4 brought together a multi-disciplinary group whose make up includes: Physicians, Podiatrists, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Nutritionists, Students and laypersons. Tracks highlighted the team approach to wound healing and limb salvage. Interactive workshops included topics relating to creation and growth of successful “Save A Leg, Save A Life”™ Chapters. The organization has grown from a local Jacksonville, Florida “lunch and learn group” whose focus was on improving wound healing outcomes, to a National Foundation with nearly 50 Chapters and counting. One of the highlights of the past few months was the invitation by the Louisiana Department of Health to have “Save A Leg, Save A Life”™ participate in screenings during the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. Over 200,000 people converged on New Orleans for the annual festival over the July 4th weekend. SALSAL members performed 200+ screenings for Peripheral Arterial Disease and Diabetes over 2 days. Additional screenings throughout SALSAL Chapter communities are having a positive impact and a 25% reduction in amputations in each community is an achievable goal that has been set forth by the Organization. Information on how to become a member or to create a “Save A Leg, Save A Life”™ chapter can be found on our website.
