Message from our Executive Director
Dear friends and colleagues,
After 25 years as the Executive Director of the Jean Tweed Centre, I
have decided to retire as of Nov 1st 2014.
It has been such great a privilege to work at Jean Tweed and be part
of an organization that is so dynamic and caring. Every day, I have
seen the wisdom of the extraordinary people with whom I have worked
over the years - I witnessed compassion, commitment and courage
from our clients, staff and volunteers, and strong support and encour-
agement from our funders, donors and the many leaders in our sys-
tem.
I am very proud of our accomplishments - of the women who have
come to the Centre for help, our staff and volunteers, our partners and
everyone associated with the work of our Centre. I leave knowing the
women we help and their families are in good hands. My decision to
retire is made easier, knowing that the Centre has a well-established
team of dedicated staff, and a strong Board of Directors. I am confi-
dent that the Centre’s exceptional clinical care, strategic priorities and
good management will continue without disruption. And, as our health
care system continues to evolve, I am certain that Jean Tweed will
thrive and demonstrate leadership, innovation and compassion.
Our Board of Directors is actively engaged in a recruiting process
(including retaining Four Corners Group to assist with our search) and
intends to announce my successor in the next few months, so that we
can ensure seamless continuity of leadership and a smooth transition
of responsibilities.
I will miss each of you, and want to thank you for your wonderful sup-
port and partnerships with the Centre over the years.

Volunteering at the Jean Tweed Centre provides an enrich-
ing experience for our volunteers, staff and clients.
We have opportunities for volunteers to participate in a
wide range of activities from gardening and helping out in
the kitchen to assisting facilitators in the delivery of pro-
gramming. No task is too small and all are equally valued.
Contact with clients vary depending on the role, agency
needs and the interests/skill of the volunteer.
The Centre typically has recruitment, orientation and
training twice a year for new volunteers in the late winter
and early fall. All positions require a minimum one year
commitment. To apply for a volunteer position or if you have any questions, please complete the

The Jean Tweed Centre has a long standing tradition of collaborating with other services
and sectors across Southern Ontario. We are proud to partner with a large number of agencies
through our various programs and initiatives. We also partner with organizations to work on re-
search and capacity building. With our partners we are stronger and better able to reach women
and families in need. We would like to thank all of our partners for the wonderful work they do.

The Jean Tweed Centre Staff Spotlight:
The Intake Department
Each issue we spotlight the individuals and de-
partments of the Jean Tweed Centre who work so hard to support the care and counseling of over 1700 women per year. In this issue we fo-
cus on our Intake Team.
Brittany Crusoe and Danielle Plato are our In-take Counsellors and Sabrina Appiah provides key support for the department. The first step at
the Centre to a woman’s healthy recovery be-gins with the Intake team. The team provides
comprehensive assessments and advice to women on appropriate program choices. They also facilitate the Support and Stabilization pro-
gram, the introductory program available to cli-ents of the Centre.
Brittany comes from a big family where a strong focus was placed on helping one another
through a life of service in the community. As a teenager, Brittany worked in programs for chil-
dren in need, building homes and increasing ac-cess to resources for families in need. This sparked her passion for social services and
counselling. Her personal work goal is that every
woman she encounters at the Centre leaves feeling her own strength and worthiness.
Danielle also loves community work and was ini-tially attracted to the Centre’s mission and val-
ues. The coordinated effort of the staff to help women and their families has made work a ful-
filling and enriching experience for her. Sabrina shares the passion of Brittany and Dan-
ielle and feels fulfilled knowing that together they are helping to make positive differences in
the lives of women and their families. Brittany, Danielle and Sabrina are accomplished
athletes in swimming, rowing and mountain climbing respectively. To relax they love to exer-
cise and have a good laugh with friends.
The Centre is pleased to have such a positive and dedicated team. They provide the initial warmth, acceptance and guidance for the wom-
en who come to JTC, an experience which often determines whether they will continue to work
with us on a path to a healthy recovery.

In March of this year, The Jean Tweed Centre released
the report “Trauma Matters: Guidelines for Trauma-
Informed Practices in Women’s Substance Use Ser-
vices”. These guidelines were funded through the Drug
Treatment Funding Program (DTFP) initiative and in-
formed by many agency experts across the Province.
These guidelines are available on our web site and
through the web site below.
Trauma-informed care has a long history at Jean
Tweed and every counsellor is trained to work from
this perspective. Trauma specific services are also
available for women who wish to do more intensive
work.
We are excited to announce that we are launching a
Trauma Matters Blog – www.traumamatters.ca. This new website will provide a space
for service providers, decision makers, researchers, and clients alike to discuss trauma-
informed practice for women with substance use, mental health, and gambling challenges.
We hope to provide a new opportunity for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and col-
laboration in the mental health and addictions sector.
We will be accepting guest blog posts on a variety of topics related to trauma and trauma-

The Women’s Mental Health and Addiction Net-
work recognized a need to expand access to ser-
vices for women facing the combined impact of
mental health, substance use, and trauma con-
cerns and recommended that The Jean Tweed
Centre lead such an initiative.
As a result, The Jean Tweed Centre launched a
new service called Reaching Out to Women
(ROW), with the support of the Toronto Central
LHIN, in the summer of 2013. This exciting new
outreach service is located in partner agencies in
central Toronto and provides trauma-informed
mental health and substance use counselling to
high-risk, vulnerable women who are accessing
shelters, drop in centres, and who have involve-
ment with the criminal justice system.
This year, the Jean Tweed Centre partnered with
Elizabeth Fry Toronto, Fred Victor, Sistering, and
YWCA Toronto to provide services to at risk
women. Three Jean Tweed counsellors are
housed at these agencies and work in collabora-
tion with the host agency staff. There has been
a significant interest in this project by women in
the community and enrollment has been very
high. As of spring 2014, 150 women have been
served.
In addition to providing counselling services to
women, ROW counsellors also work to build ca-
pacity in the communities served by providing
training and consultation on trauma-informed
practice to other health care professionals.
