Dear Parents & Guardians,

It is with mixed emotions that I write this final letter to all the parents and families of students at Presentation Clonmel. As you know I am retiring at the end of this school year, this decision is bittersweet, I am sad to be leaving and excited about the opportunities to spend time with family and friends that lie ahead.

Serving as Principal of Pres has been a great honor and a defining part of my life. When I was appointed principal in 1991, I had so many ideas and dreams for our students and school. I am happy to say, that working with you, our Board and our wonderful staff I have seen many of them come true.

It has been a pleasure partnering with you and all the other parents, teachers and students that have made my time at Pres such a pleasure. I truly believe that gathered here we have a group of talented and passionate teachers and ancillary staff that together make this school a place of high personal support and high academic achievement. I have been just one part of this exceptional team.

Our Board of Management have found in Michael O'Loughlin an exceptional leader to become the next Principal of Pres Clonmel. Roisin Hennessy, a teacher and past pupil, has been appointed Deputy Principal. Under the direction of this team the school will go from strength to strength.

I appreciate the many, many memories I have made together with the students and staff over the years. I will always feel a part of the Presentation family.

Finally, I would like to thank you and all the Pres Clonmel families, for the opportunity to work toward the success of each and every girl at our school. Wishing you all every blessing for the years ahead.

As you read this newsletter you will see the breadth and the depth of the curriculum that is experienced by students here in the Pres. All of the extra-curricular activities reported on in these pages happen through the hard work of the staff members who make themselves available in their own time to work with students. I hope that your daughter can take full advantage of the opportunities offered to her and that she will live school life to the full. The ethos of the school is to care for all our students and it is my hope that your experience of dealing with our school has been a positive one where we try our best to live by our ethos.

The achievements at local, regional and national level reflect outstanding commitment and dedication by staff and students. They are just reward for all of those who have worked so hard to achieve and to excel in so many diverse areas. The many and varied nature of the successes enjoyed by the students and staff have again raised our profile and demonstrated clearly to the wider community just what great work is happening in our school.

Also,I would like to extend my best wishes to Mrs Reynolds, who is retiring at the end of the academic year. She has given sterling service to our school in her role as Principal and I would like to wish the very best in her retirement.

I hope that you and your family will enjoy a happy summer. I would like to acknowledge your continued support and encouragement throughout the year. While the time in which we live presents many challenges for us all, the generosity of spirit and goodwill to be found in our school is most uplifting and has made working in our school community much more enjoyable. I look forward to working with you in the coming year in my new role as Principal and I want to congratulate Roisin Hennessy on her appointment as our new Deputy-Principal. We are looking forward to embracing the great and wonderful 'Pres Ethos' over the coming years.

Every good wishMichael O'Loughlin.Deputy Principal

Written by Amy Dempsey (5th Year, Presentation Secondary School Clonmel)

On Friday, the 15th of March, all the pupils and staff of Presentation Secondary School Clonmel took part in the #fridaysForFuture campaign. The school switched off the electricity, while the students gathered their pickets and made a human chain on Convent Road to show their support for Swedish student Greta Thunberg. The 16-year-old rose to fame last year, when she decided to strike for climate change outside the Swedish Parliament every Friday.

The Presentation Secondary School Clonmel was one of many schools in Ireland to join the now global movement on that Friday, demanding action from the Irish government to prevent further global warming and climate change. It was not the first environment initiative the school got involved in. An environmental committee in the school works hard to promote recycling. They welcome the most recent decision of the school to ban all single-use plastics. After the Easter holidays, only re-usable water bottles will be allowed in the school to reduce waste and minimise the effect it has on the environment. The school is passionate about recycling: each room is fitted with labelled bins and signs that tells students what goes in each bin. On April 5th, the school will hold its annual “Green Action Day” which will include a Spring Clean along the river Suir, a bake sale to raise funds for cutlery and other items needed to replace single-use plastics and a table quiz to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Friday's protest was a huge success. It certainly grabbed the attention of many people passing by. It also made the pupils aware of how their actions can effect the planet and damage it. Hopefully, more local schools in Ireland will join the movement and help save the planet. Little changes make a big difference.

On Thursday 2nd May, 26 of the girls who are studying Home Economics in 5th travelled to Cashel Blue cheese factory. We met Sarah, who is one of the family who owns the plant and she told us about the origins of Cashel Blue cheese and explained to us that it is an environmentally friendly product. Then the girls had to follow strict hygiene rules and cover their clothes, hair and feet. We were given a tour of the factory, where the girls learned how blue cheese is made at first hand. PJ our tour guide answered the girls questions and they got to sample 4 different cheeses. Finally, they saw a short film about the place.

Nearby, we visited Magners Chicken farm. This is a small family farm. Kyle allowed the girls to rub their pet chicken while explaining about what they like to eat, how they like being outside, and the different ways chicken are reared. She showed us one of the little chicks and then we went out into the field where all the laying hens were. She demonstrated how crowded barn hens are by putting them into a cage and emphasized the importance of being kind to animals as they do so much for us. Finally, Kylie kindly gave us 120 organic little eggs to distribute to the students at school.

We are very grateful to both Cashel Blue cheese and Magners Farm for giving up their time to show the students around. The girls learned lots of interesting and relevant information.

Students at the Presentation Secondary School Clonmel enjoyed an action packed week of activities during Positivity Week in April 2019.The week focused on the physical and mental health well-being of all members of our school community. Events such as Gymnastics, Open Mic in the canteen, inter year dodge ball competition, Computer Competitions and lunchtime disco took place over the week.On Tuesday afternoon, our special guest was Jake Carter. Jake entertained a packed PE Hall with a selection of songs. On Wednesday we had an impromptu disco at lunchtime in the Assembly Hall. The week ended with our “Open Mic” session. Well done to all our student performers and a special appearance from the “Spice Girls” and “The Village People” from our “Stars in their Eyes”.After that great entertainment, it was onto St Patrick's Well for Lenten Prayer Service. We reflected as a school community on climate change and the action we need to take to save our planet, our home and through prayer we made pledges to change the way we live. Our thanks to the members of the Student Council and Mr. Martin O'Loughlin who organised the week. Also, to our RE Department for organising the prayer service.

Great success for our school at WIT SciFest Competition

TY students Hannah De Longue and Caoimhe Woods succeeded in winning the chemistry award in the 2019 Sci Fest in WIT on the 1st of May with their project "Bubble Bottles" .Using the process of spherification and the reaction between two chemicals to encase a bubble of water in a semi-solid membrane. Basically a jelly-coated bubble of water! Hannah and Caoimhe were inspired to do this to eliminate the use of plastic to aid the environment.

Aimee Hennessy and Desiree McCarthy also won a merit award for their project on a pen with for barrels including a tippex slot, ''Tip-Pen'' named for the use of correction fluid and aptly named because the school is located in Tipperary. Aimee and Desiree were inspired by the original 4-barrel Bic pen, and decided to remove the green coloured barrel as they discovered from surveys it was the least used pen and introduce a barrel of correction fluid, which was also made by the girls. The girls believe that the Tip-Pen would increase the interest that teenagers have in doing their homework as this is a new product that has never been seen before.

Also, well done to Ms Ryan who was awarded the teacher award for mentoring students with their projects and received this award from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Local music teachers lead innovative, inter-schools’ collaboration with the development of a unique teaching tool – the “Trad Road Show”.

On Tuesday 30th April, Music teachers from the Presentation Secondary School, CBS High School, Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn and Loreto Secondary School came together to facilitate a collaborative, interactive workshop on Irish Traditional Music. Using the best resources available to them, their own traditional music students, these teachers carried out three two-hour workshops in three different venues across the town; Loreto, the High School and the Presentation. The purpose of the workshop was the expose post-primary level music students to live traditional music, with focus on the syllabus for Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate music.

The original idea was pitched by Siobhán Alley, of the Presentation, to the other music teachers back in early January. After a series of inter-schools’ meetings, a program was devised by the music teachers, which they felt would be of tremendous benefit to their students. With the program structure designed, the teachers then went on to facilitate a meeting with several music students from each school who are highly proficient in traditional music. The students worked together to agree on suitable, common tunes which they would use during the workshop. Teachers from the team commented on how fantastic it was to have such talented performers in their midst, but more importantly, how rewarding it was to see so many young people working together for the benefit of their peers.

During each workshop the audiences were provided with a booklet, where they could take notes which would benefit them in both the listening question on the exam paper and the essay question. Each performer discussed their individual instrument and played examples for the audience to hear and to comment on. Mr. Tom Kenna and his daughter Clodagh (Loreto) performed a series of beautiful tunes together which gave Mr. Kenna a chance to divulge his wealth of knowledge about the lesser known bouzouki to the students. Bríd McMaugh (Loreto) and siblings Ellen and Seamus O’ Gorman (Presentation & High School) wowed audiences with their slow airs on their fiddles, while young Naoise Forristal (Gaelcholáiste) played a highly impressive planxty on her beautiful harp. Henry Fitzgerald, a past student of the Presentation, kindly joined the team on this roadshow to demonstrate a variety of dance rhythms on the bodhrán. However, according to members of the audience, the highlight of the day was being awarded the opportunity to see and hear the uillean pipes, expertly performed by Cian Smyth (High School). One student commented on the fact that although they learn about all the instruments in the classroom, hear and see them from video clips, there is nothing compared to seeing such an integral instrument of the Irish tradition right in front of their eyes. Another student commented on how they found the “team teaching” element of the workshop very helpful. Each audience

was treated to a very special ‘seisiún’ at the end each workshop, where they saw the tradition come to life in front of them. A special mention must go to Mary-Kate Geehan (Gaelcholáiste) who treated us to some fantastic Irish dancing as well as singing a lament in sean-nós.

Each of the workshops was filmed and photographed by a local company, “Home of the Mind”, who followed the team to each of the three venues. It is the intention of the Music teachers to use this recording as a shared teaching resource for future students. The “Trad Roadshow” teachers extended a special thanks to the senior management teams of all four schools for their support in facilitating such a unique and innovative project and expressed how they look forward to working together again and furthering this wonderful collaboration.

“Trad Road Show” Teachers: Siobhán Alley & Jennifer Williams (Presentation Secondary School), Olga Gannon & Tom Kenna (CBS High School), Marie Mullen, Breda Geoghegan and Patricia O’ Mahoney (Loreto Secondary School)

“Trad Road Show” Performers: Ellen O’ Gorman (fiddle) and Anna Tobin (trad flute) from the Presentation. Seamus O’ Gorman (fiddle), Cian Smyth (uillean pipes), Eoin O’ Keeffe (guitar), Tom Kenna (bouzouki), Conor Butler (button accordion) and David Barry (trad flute) from the High School. Clodagh Kenna (tin whistle), Róisín Barry (piano/concertina), Emma O’ Keeffe (box) and Bríd McMaugh (fiddle) from the Loreto. Naoise Forristal (harp/concertina), Sean Collins (banjo), Mary-Kate Geehan (fiddle/vocals), Oisín Forristal (box) from Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn.

On Friday March 8th, both Presentation Primary and Secondary Schools Clonmel joined together for a major fundraising initiative “Stars in their Eyes” in Hotel Minella. The event was sponsored by local company Camida and both schools really appreciate their support towards the event. A packed audience was entertained by twelve acts (six representing Primary and six representing the Secondary School). All twelve acts were just outstanding and they all entertained a very enthusiastic audience. The winning act “Village People” certainly electrified the audience. It was truly a spectacular event with students from both schools providing entertainment during the night as well. Both schools would like to thank all the companies who sponsored an act, or purchased an advertisement in the programme.Brendan Cummins, MC for the night, gave a master performance with his interaction with the three judges, Aoife O'Keeffe (AOK Dance Studio),Mattie McGrath T.D and Owen Lonergan Tipp FM. The night was excellently produced by Diarmuid Boyle without whose advice, guidance and encouragement we might have floundered. The generosity of the Nallen family ensured that we had access to such beautiful facilities. Both schools are blessed to have very talented students, staff, parents and members of Board of Management who worked together on this historic successful event.
