Over the past week VCE students who decided not to sit the exams after they have passed their VCE attended a series of classes to give them detailed information about fine tuning their resumes and job applications, getting advice on dealing with Centrelink and sitting through mock interviews with local employers so that they are in the best position possible to take the next step in their lives, whatever that may be. The feedback from students involved was that they found the classes and activities very useful so we are looking for ways that in the future this can be done with all students earlier in the year. Hello Everyone.

The VCE written exams for students doing a Year 12 subject began in earnest on Wednesday morning with all English and English as an Additional Language students spending three hours in the Federation University Auditorium. The rest of the exams will be help in the Kurnai classrooms at the Leisure Centre. We wish all the students sitting exams the best of luck in the coming weeks.

Surfing Awareness - Part two Wednesday 24th October greeted Year 11 Sport and Rec students with bright sunshine and no wind to speak of as we departed Churchill, bound for Inverloch. This was welcome relief after our previous trip!

Inverloch greeted us with a somewhat cloudy but otherwise perfect day to hit the water.

Offshore Surf School instructors again put us through our paces, covering some more advanced surfing techniques such as turning, reading the beach, paddling out, and a refresher on basics including standing up, padding into waves and surf safety.

The conditions were much more user friendly with all surfers managing to improve their skills with help from Offshore staff. This however didn’t stop a select few of us drinking up to our bodyweight in salt water when wipeouts inevitably occurred.

A well-deserved congratulations to all students on their enthusiasm, conduct, and skill improvement across both sessions.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Attention ALL 2019 Year 11 and 12 students,

Would you like to attend the Mt Hotham Camp in 2019?

Mt Hotham is a well-known ski resort approximately 4-5 hours drive from Churchill via Omeo. The main activities undertaken on the camp will be downhill skiing and/or snowboarding.

The camp will run from Sunday 7th July to Friday 12th July. Students must be at the University Campus bus stop at 10.00am on the Sunday. We intend to return to Kurnai College (University Campus) at approximately 9.00pm on the Friday. Students will be staying at a Ski Lodge located at the top of the mountain. The total cost of the camp will be approximately $1650.00 which includes:

Resort entries

Accommodation

All meals

Lift

Lessons

Night skiing on Wednesday evening

Ski/Snowboard Hire including carve skis, boots and poles or board and boots

Transport to and from Mount Hotham

Hotham hoodie jumper

Students will need to pay a deposit of $300 if they would like to secure a position for the camp by 1/12/2018. We have organised a payment plan in an effort to give families the opportunity to finalise the full payment by 2.00pm on Friday 21st June 2019. While we understand this is an expensive camp we strongly believe that this is the most economical way of giving students the opportunity to participate in Alpine Snow sports. All students who participate in this camp will come home exhausted and thoroughly satisfied with their experiences, bubbling with stories of the thrills and spills they encountered.

In order for this camp to proceed we require a minimum of 20 students to attend and will cap the attendance at 25 students. In the event of us not receiving enough interest, we will have to cancel this camp and, in this instance only, your deposit will be refunded.

Students are expected to have a good behaviour history and an average or above average fitness level. Parents will be notified if their child is in danger of losing their invitation to camp due to poor behaviour at school. These decisions will be made by the Principal, in consultation with the advocate team and Camp Coordinator. Additional information will be provided to your child as time gets closer to ensure your child is properly equipped for the camp. Their safety and comfort will depend on this. If students don’t have the required equipment they may be able to borrow a snow jacket and pants or alternatively this clothing can be hired from Mt Hotham.

Ambulance membership is highly recommended as a trip in an ambulance from Mt Hotham can cost thousands of dollars if you are a non-member. We also recommend travel insurance for an additional cost.

If you have any further queries, please contact Mrs Candy White, the Camp Coordinator at the University Campus on 5132 3800.

VCE External Exams That moment that you and your child have both looked forward to and dreaded has arrived – exams! Starting from Wednesday the exam period has taken off in full swing, kicking off with English and EAL. If your child is currently enrolled in a Year 12 subject (classified as a Unit 4) then they will be undertaking an exam in the near future. These exams are an important part of their VCE as they are a key component in calculating their study score and ATAR once they finish Year 12. However, it is also a time where your child may feel anxious as the exams are a stressful time for anyone undertaking them. In order to keep stress levels down, our Year 12 study room is open and available throughout the exam period and teachers are available for students to come and get some feedback and review time in preparation for their exams. At home making sure that they have a balanced exam revision schedule, a healthy diet and regular sleep will help to keep their energy levels high and retain their focus during this stressful time.

Exam timetables have been provided and are available from the front office if required as are the rules for conduct in a VCE external examination. Whether it is your child’s first exam or their final I wish them good luck and if in Year 12 I hope to see them at graduation!
