WHAT MATTERS . . . . . May 16, 2017 . . . News from Your Synod and Ministry Partners Message from Bishop Froiland Dear synod companions, Some of you know this already - I sent out an email to all our pastors and deacons yesterday - but I wanted you to hear it from me. Last Friday morning, while grocery shopping in Janesville, I suffered a heart attack. Luckily I was near Mercy Hospital, which has a trauma center and cardiac specialists. An emergency angiogram showed one blocked artery that was quickly reopened with a stent. All other arteries look great and heart damage is minimal. I spent one night in the hospital and came home Saturday afternoon. I am recovering well, feeling fine, and adjusting to new medications. On Thursday I begin cardiac rehab. I anticipate no lasting health effects and no restrictions on what I can do. Actually, thanks to modern technology, my heart is in better shape than it was before this happened. I plan on keeping it that way! I have canceled most stuff on my calendar for this week, and next week was already scheduled for vacation with family in Minneapolis, so I am grateful that I have the time and space to heal and recover. I am incredibly grateful for our exceptional synod staff folks who have stepped up and covered so well for me. Thanks to all who have sent messages of concern and have been holding John and me in your thoughts and prayers. We are doing well. God's peace, Bishop Mary DIAKONIA SENDING SERVICE FOR GRADUATING CLASS OF 2017 SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 2017 at 2:30 PM The synod’s Diakonia program will graduate four students on Saturday, June 3. When Your Family Is Living on the Streets, The Road Home Changes Every Night . . . The South-Central Synod of Wisconsin Racial Equity Ministry Team Invites You to The Next Learning Session on “Helping Our Homeless Neighbors” - May 21 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm These informative events are held monthly and the topic changes from month to month. Second Cohort of CONNECT to Start This Fall One of my roles as Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM) in the Synod is to work with congregations in the renewal process. This fall we will be starting a second cohort of CONNECT, a renewal ministry process designed to work with congregations. CONNECT is a renewal process that strives to empower congregations to grow spiritually, discover their gifts as a congregation, and live out their faith in the community by sharing the gifts with which they have been blessed. It is a two-year process that consists of workshops, homework for the leaders, and the implementation in the congregation.

CONNECT starts with congregations selecting 4-7 members (including the pastor) to serve on the Congregational CONNECT Team. This team will commit to make as many of the workshops as possible, be spiritual leaders in the congregation, participate in monthly meetings with the CONNECT Team, and be the bridge between the CONNECT process and the congregation. Over the two-year period there are four workshops. If you are interested in learning more about participating in this renewal process, please contact me at the synod office at (608) 270-0201 or email me at: [email protected] Resources Mentioned at Synod Assembly 1) Video: “Where Does My Offering Go?” you can find this on YouTube: Link Below: https://youtu.be/vzTnNwtXHV4?t=16 2) Steeple to Steeple Ride for Hunger - Can be found on the synod website. www.scsw-elca.org - Click on Events then “Hunger Ride.” Direct link to page: http://www.scsw-elca.org/hunger_ride.aspx 3) 2017 Assembly Displayers and Links to Contact them - http://www.scsw-elca.org/Events/2017Assembly/2017DisplayersSponsors.pdf 4) SCSW Speaker’s Bureau - For that next adult forum or men’s retreat or women’s group or confirmation class, contact one of our experts on a full range of topics from mindfulness meditation to music to caring for our veterans. http://www.scsw-elca.org/speakers_bureau.aspx 5) Manuscript and video of Bishop Froiland’s sermon: http://www.scsw-elca.org/synod_assembly_2017.aspx 6) Million Dollar Mission Jar Challenge:- Visit the synod website next week for downloadable jar inserts and more information.

Invest a day with Rev. Dr. Rich Melheim and friends to: *Explore case studies of faith formation pioneers who have implemented various cross generational ministries in their own

churches. *Learn about a world of fun and effective Cross+Gen resources that draw children, teens, young adults, parents and elders into the same “eduworship” space, fostering cross+generational faith formation, fellowships, relationships and care. *Experience a sneak peak of the new Luther Rock Opera, and a great cross gen way to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. *Leave with a plan to immerse and include a wider community than ever before in your lifelong learning, worship and faith formation practices. An Outdoor Ministry Internship: Engaging Millennials “So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:8 At Crossway Camping Ministries, we decided that young adults

who are interested in their call and their faith need to be invested in as an important ministry. After all, because millennials seek alternative ways to worship and serve, outdoor ministry and millennials would appear to be a great pair. As a result, the Servant Leader Internship Program came into fruition two years ago. For more information about the program, visit http://www.crosswayscamps.org/servant-leader-internship-program.html. If you are interested in hearing more about the program, the application process (as we are accepting applications for this fall), or how you can support us through visits or educational outlets, please contact Becca Mortensen. For example, “Finding Authentic Community” is a recent article you may find interesting…share this invitation with your congregation. http://www.boldcafe.org/
