It is hard to believe we are heading into the last stretch of the 2014-2015 school year. As always, our students have shown great Charger spirit both in and out of the class-room. Now, it is a time of transitions. We are transitioning into a new season of athletics after a highly successful winter of sports. We are actively planning to welcome our new Chargers in September. Our current students are looking ahead to next school year, and finally, our seniors are looking at their last few months with us. We are so proud of them.

On March 26th, almost 200 students wrote the

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. We are thankful for our senior hospitality students who prepared and served breakfast to all the students prior to the test. Our students worked hard to prepare for the test, and we anticipate receiving results later this spring.

We have had two dances this semester, one in February and one in April. Student Council led spirit based events for both Valentine’s Day and in the week leading up to Easter. On April 1

Visual Arts Trip to AGO and Distillery District

Grades 10-12 visual art students travelled to Toronto in April to experience the Jean Michel Basquiat ex-hibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario and artisan shops and galleries at the Distillery District. The Basquiat tour was one of the best we’ve seen, echoing what we do in class by encouraging students to consider art as a tool for critical thinking and expressive communication. Students were inquisitive and appeared inspired, asking insightful questions and sharing their own interpretations of the work. Students drew pic-tures and jotted notes as they toured, and brought many more questions and comments home with them for further discussion. One student even created a Basquiat sweatshirt the following weekend and sever-al used what they saw as inspiration for their upcoming paintings. At the Distillery District, students had the opportunity to meet artists and artisans and discuss their work, getting a first-hand glimpse of life as a working artist.

Global Awareness The Global Awareness Committee is continuing to raise funds to assist several humanitarian organizations. The organi-zations that the Committee continues to assist include the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, and Free the Children. Another initiative that the Global Awareness Committee organized was “Baby Hats for Africa”. Cen-tennial’s students and staff knitted and collected baby hats, as well as blankets to distribute to hospitals and orphanages in Africa. The Global Awareness Committee also hosted bake sales to continue raising funds, and also continues to plan future events to support our local and global communities.

Centennial Badminton

This year saw Centennial building a Junior team with a good number of rookie players, while our Senior team was comprised almost exclusively of grade 11s moving up in level. Tryout interest was strong, and required a lengthy selection process.

At the Bay of Quinte Championship, Samson Chan walked away with GOLD with an effortless win in singles. He dominated play with impressive drop shots and effective footwork, beating all his com-petitors in decisive manner, allowing them no more than 10 points in the best of cases. He went on to capture GOLD at the COSSA Championship held in Brighton.

Other notable juniors were Kevin Tsang, boys singles, who took third at Bay of Quinte and ad-vanced to COSSA, while Alex Hall and Joe Roy took third in BQ play and also at COSSA in mixed doubles. Our Junior Chargers capture 2

nd place as a team.

Our Seniors were strong with most doubles teams advancing to the later rounds of play in the draw, all putting in personal best performances. SILVER went to Dan Hall and Brady Crowe in boys dou-bles, while there were a number of 5

th place finishes that narrowly missed advancing to COSSA. At

COSSA, held at Thomas A. Stewart in Peterborough, Dan and Brady worked hard to move forward but struggled at times, ending the day in 5

th place.

Coaches Davidson and Perkins congratulate the team on a good showing and we look forward to next season.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

We are excited to announce an opportunity for our current and future Chargers!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Make a Difference THE AWARD: The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages young people ages 14 to 24 to Make a Difference while exploring their potential, taking on new challenges and achieving success. The Award is comprised of three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Participants must set and achieve goals in four different program areas that allow them to get involved with their community, explore the great outdoors, discover or enhance a skill or hobby, and engage in regular physical ac-tivity. The Award is about personal challenges and development, and is customized according to a participant’s interests and abilities. The Award is a non-competitive, program designed to encourage young people to develop positive skills and habits. Participants benefit through their own effort and develop self-confidence, motiva-tion and life-long friendships. Participants are recognized for their efforts upon completion at a cere-mony in the company of their peers, friends and family. By achieving The Award, young people demonstrate initiative and the dedication it takes to follow through and complete a task. The Award was founded in 1956 by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh K.G. K.T. in London, England to help young people develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and their communi-ties. A concept of individual challenge, The Award is a program of voluntary activities which encour-ages personal discovery, growth, self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility. The Award current-ly operates in over 143 countries around the world. NOTE There are many activities that students are already doing that would count for this award.
