NATIONAL SEED INDUSTRY COUNCIL ● CROP VARIETIES CY 2014

KAAGAPAY SA MALAYA AT MATAGUMPAY NA KALAKALAN NG PRODUKTONG AGRICULTURA! This is the thematic road

that BPI will tread this 2015. This year 2015, we are thankful and grateful to all Filipino farmers that truly give their hearts to sustain the needs of every Filipino people

for food and brought economic development to our country in a very challenging current situation due to different climatic and non-climatic factors that affect agricultural production.

Foremost our attention is to provide information that will possibly strengthen the farmers or producers of locally produce agricultural

product for global standardization of crop qualities and effectively brought about success in trading with our neighbouring countries. The use of suitable and high value commercial crops varieties, we ensure our capacity to produce enough supply of our needs in a very unpredictable situation of our food source and maintain quality but low in price. That is why; plant breeders and other researchers in plant industry are searching for the best varieties of quality crop seeds that will continuously develop our primary crops as we always serve in every Filipino family as well as in the other neighboring countries.

In line with this, the Department of Agriculture through Bureau of Plant Industry – National Seed industry Council exemplify its

mandate to the breeders of new crop variety to examine and verify their crops as unique individual plants with good agronomic or horticultural characteristics through field testing. In this way, the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) will register only the proven crop varieties that have distinct value, quality and high yielding crops and other plant attributes and are adaptable in different environmental condition before they are released for commercialization.

Recently, the National Seed Industry Council approved for registration and accreditation some new varieties of rice, corn, mungbean,

pineapple, and mango and others. The varieties’ characteristics are now published in our 2014 Seed Catalogue. It is our commitment to the farmers to uplift their agricultural practices and their produce become globally competitive.

PAZ J. BENAVIDEZ II Assistant Secretary for Regulations

OIC-Director, Bureau of Plant Industry

Flowers are not conspicuous but fruits are attractive when they ripen as golden yellow berries. Marcotting, stem cutting, shoot tip cutting, and single node cutting are the asexual means of propagation. This new mutant variety is recommended for landscaping as hedge or accent plant under low light intensities such as under trees. Plants may be containerized for indoor use. Owner/Originator: Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI)

Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City

BACKGROUND:

Botanical name : Schefflera sp. Popular/Local name : Galamay-amo, Five-fingers,

Schefflera Plant origin/Locality : Batangas province, Luzon island

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

The branching plant is a scandent schrub that is currently 1.27 meters in height. The alternate leaves are petiolulate palmately compound, each measuring up to 22.0 cm across. There are 3-7 lanceolate to ovate leaflets with petiolate base, acuminate to caudate tip, and entire margin. Smallest mature leaflet measures 3.6 cm x 1.6 cm, while largest mature leaflet measures 13.0 cm x 4.0 cm. Middle leaflet is symmetric while side leaflets are asymmetric. Venation is pinnate. Surface of blade is subglabrate to minutely puberulent with isolated trichomes. Midrib is minutely puberulent. Brown green (N137A) leaf similar to mother plant except for the variegation resulting in light green (145A), dark green (144A) and yellow green (154D) irregular markings.

Dracaena

Dracaena ‘Sun Beam’ is a chlorophyll mutant of Dracaena sanderiana var. virescens obtained by gamma radiation of stem cuttings about 6 inches long. It belongs to the same batch of planting materials treated with acute gamma rays from a Cobalt-60 (Co-60) source that yielded Dracaena ‘Marea’ (NSIC 2001 Or-60). In all aspects, Sun Beam is similar to the parent material except for the strong yellowish green (144A-B) banding in the middle portion of the leaf. From 1997, it took a long time purify the putative mutant plant by vegetative generation advancement using its suckers and the new shoots produced by its decapitated stems. Owner/Originator: Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI)

Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City

BACKGROUND:

Botanical name : Dracaena sanderiana var. virescens

Popular/Local name : Sander’s dracaena, Ribbon dracaena Plant origin/Locality : Tropical West Africa

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

Herbaceous, evergreen, shrubby plant with slender stem and loose spiral arrangement of leaves. The narrowly elliptic leaves measure up to 29.5 cm long and up to 5.3 cm wide with aristate tip, sheathing base and entire margin. The upper surface of the leaf blade is moderate olive green (146A) with strong yellowish green (144A-B) center of various width but always less than 33% of the blade width. The strong yellowish green (144A) center is also visible underneath that is moderate yellowish green (147B-C) on both sides. The plant is about 1 m tall and still growing. It forms a clump by producing suckers that can be separated for propagation. Shoot tip and stem cuttings are other vegetative means of multiplication. Higher light intensities but lower temperatures result in better color combination.
