Wayne Hill took over the Mesa softball program in the 2012 season and began the process of building the T-Birds back into a regional power. In 2013, the T-Birds finished second in region play with a record of 17-11. Mesa improved their overall record to 32-29. The 2013 team has placed five players in Division-I programs and one player in an NAIA program.

His coaching experience over the past 21 years has ranged from participating in many camps as an in-structor across the state, Nevada and Texas. For the past eight years Hill has worked as a camp clinician at Baylor University working with infielders and hitting instruction.

Hill, a retired police sergeant with the Mesa Police De-partment, received his post baccalaureate in Education and began his teaching profession. After 12 years as an educator, he accepted the coaching position at MCC.

During his past 10 years at Dobson High School, his teams were successful in breaking nearly every hitting record. In 2009, he was selected as the All-East Valley Region Coach of the Year.

Family is a high priority with him. He and his lovely wife Eva recently celebrated their 37th year of marriage. They are proud parents of four wonderful children who have blessed them with six beautiful grandchildren. Their children have earned degrees in education, biology, and environmental technology.

Hill shares his educational and coaching philosophy in that he sees himself as a teacher. Although he strives and lives for winning, he feels that athletics is much more. Because athletics can be so beneficial and rewarding, it is his job as a coach to provide an environ-ment in which all athletes can grow as people, as they work for and experience the enjoyment of softball.

Although this will be Mike Sullivan’s third year of coaching at Mesa, the native of Maple Heights, Ohio, has been coaching at various levels for 36 years. A 1968 graduate of UCLA, Sullivan played baseball for the Bruins and then had a six-year minor league career which was shortened by a shoulder injury. He then began a coaching career in both baseball and wrestling. As an assistant wrestling coach at Maple Heights H.S. his teams

SullivanMike

won a total of five state championships. He had a chance to work at four Olympic wrestling camps as a clinician with legendary wrestler Dan Gable. After moving to Arizona in 1981 he coached at Rhodes Junior High School and Dobson High School in both baseball and wres-tling. He won five Mesa city freshman championships at Rhodes in both sports.
