EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
I know I seem to say this every month, I can’t believe it’s January. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year. The Great Heart of Elkdom is alive and well at Mesa Buckhorn. A huge Thank You
to Janet Koath-Lacerda and her great volunteers who helped coordinate all the great events throughout
the month of December. It started out with shopping for the kids and hopefully we will be back to shop-
ping with the kids next year. Also, Thanks to all those who attended and participated in the Annual Me-
morial Service, it is one of the two required services that we are required to perform every lodge year
along with Flag Day. I will say sadly this year was my first for both and I know I will plan on attending both
for many years to come. With Flag Day in June, we learned so much about the history of the flags. For
the Memorial Service as each name was read and a candle was lit, I know I was able to reflect on those
members who have we have lost this past year and think of the impact they have had on our lodge and
Elkdom in general.
Speaking of that, I have never hidden my story here in Elkdom and Mesa Buckhorn. I have been a mem-
ber for about 9 years and for the most part we came to Queen of Hearts on Wednesday and Meat Raffle
on Saturday and events throughout the year. I was Chaplain for 6 months in my first few years and 6
months on the Board of Directors as a Trustee before Exalted Ruler. Now this isn’t the way most
members work their way to Exalted Ruler. Most work their way through volunteering on any one of the
great committee’s we have and/or starting at Tiler or Inner Guard or possibly Esquire or Chaplain and
then working their way through the chairs to Lecturing Knight to Loyal Knight to Leading Knight and to
Exalted Ruler. Some will say wow that is a lot of time spent learning all of that to get to Exalted Ruler. I
will honestly tell you that it has been drinking from a fire hose learning and great support from other
long-time members of our order and the grace and trust from all our members. As New Year’s comes
upon us every year, I like to reflect and this year as I think of my journey through Elkdom I can’t change
anything, but I really wish I would have got involved earlier. I, like many of you, might be waiting for
someone to ask or maybe just figured that the lodge had it all taken care of. We are a volunteer organi-
zation and predominantly run-on volunteers to make our lodge so successful.
I would like to invite each one of you to be involved, get involved and I don’t know what that means for
you. I know it will be different for everyone as each member, volunteer has different passions and
different time availabilities as well as talents. We are going to have a “Rush Day” on the last Saturday of
January 2-3:30pm in the Dining Room. We will have tables set up for all our committees that you can sign
up for to be involved in. I will be sharing how you can get involved with all our elected positions as well.
As you can tell this will be perfect time as nominations and elections for new officer’s will be coming up
in our lodge meetings in February.
Lastly, I will mention our Arizona Elks Major Projects Golf Tournament at Arizona Golf Resort January 15th at 8am Shotgun. Golfers, Sponsors and Volunteers will be needed to make this a success. Remember we support the Steele Children’s Research Center in Tucson and the Jack C. Warter Elks Youth Camp in Young, AZ. Check out www.azelksmp.com for more information and be sure to join the Diamond Club while you are there.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME TO 2022!!! I hope your Holiday Season was wonderful!! If yours was anything like mine, then it was a busy one!!! January is here and that means it is time for Major Projects Month!! As we know, Major Pro-jects helps the University of Arizona Steele Children’s Research Center and the Jack Warter Elks Youth Camp. I am so lucky to help raise money for these two worthwhile causes! The AZ Elks Major Projects began raising money for the Steele Center in 1992. I have en-closed an excerpt from their website so that you can see what Arizona has done so far: “In 2012, the Arizona Elks made a commitment to raise $2.5 million over the next 10 years. $1 million will support basic science research in autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease. In addition, funds will sup-port translating this basic science through research studies at the Steele Children's Research Center in Phoenix. The remaining $1.5 million will establish the Arizona Elks Endowed Chair in Statewide Pediatric Research. The prestige of the endowed chair will enable the Steele Children's Research Center to recruit a top-notch clinical research leader to head the Steele Children's Research Center’s Phoenix enterprise.” This center is dedicated to changing the lives of children all over the world. Please check out their website and see all of the good they are doing!! Please help us this month by buying 50/50 raffle tickets, attending the Meat Raffles, purchasing tickets for our Scratcher Board or coming to our fundraiser Sunday Meal on Jan 23rd! Also make sure you get your Golf reservations and come out for a fun day! As I am sure you have read from our ER, this tournament will help support Major Projects!! Also don’t forget the Shred-a-Thon on Jan 22 from 10 – 11 AM. We will have a company at the Lodge to shred those documents you have stored away! Items should be loaded into a Banker Box to take to the Lodge. Cost should be around $5.00 per box. This is also a fundraiser for Major Projects!! I look forward to seeing you all at the lodge!!
