Mahatma Education Society`s ANNUAL SPORTS REPORT 2018-19
“In sports - Leadership is a responsibility, not a designation”
PILLAI GROUP OF INSTITUTIONS
MES SPORTS CONTROL BOARD
THE FOCUS TO GRASS ROOT SPORTS
The sports & games have the quality to heal, build harmony, develop character,
resolve disputes, unite masses and create cohesiveness within a nation and the world.
We are a country with almost 50% population under the age of 25, with a powerful
will it can be leveraged an outstanding result and life skills. Change through sporting
creates a positive attitude and its impact that mould generation next and render a
helping hand to integrate people &culture.
The government of India has initiated a number of policy &program changes to promote sports with
the above understanding in mind. (1) Build Awareness & Participation at the Grass-Roots Level,
(2) Performance Excellence and Podium Finishes. Sports needs to be encouraged and promoted at
the grassroots level; youngsters and their parents have to see sports as a financially viable career
option, the packaging of the sport needs to be slick, digital mediums have to be used to engage with
audience and the fan base and local communities have to find a way to participate. Then only the
impact will be long-term, sustainable and meaningful.
Unless the federations of Indian sports begin to form a comprehensive view of sports development,
sporadic reform and minuscule changes will continue to happen but will be unable to deliver long-
term sustainable impact.
With the support of private stake holders, there are many sports league came up at national level in
India, but creating sports leagues is not enough to develop sports in India. Impact of such leagues is
limited since the benefits are shared by only a few at the top end of the sport.
Various data’s indicate that while more than 40% of our population participates in cricket, the
average participation for all other sports (Badminton, Cycling, Running, Football, Volleyball,
Tennis, Swimming, etc) is below 10%. Clearly, Indians at large have never been the 'sporty type'.
Sports are not engrained in our psyche. Neither is it an integral part of our everyday life. The
passion for sports has only resided in a small percentage of the population.
Unless we make a structured effort to widen the base of sports & increase its participation at the
grassroots level, we will continue to lag behind, not just on social development & youth inclusion
parameters but also deliver limited success at world sports events. We must remember that the by
product of sports, the health & fitness is sequential and definitely more important than winning
medals.
The Girls and women are participating in sports and winning laurels for India which is a wonderful
sign from a national development context. The ladies constituted about 45% of the CWG 2018 team
and won 42% of the medals. While the sports ministry has to lead the charge, other stakeholders i.e.
corporate, entrepreneurs, national federation, state-level associations, equipment manufacturers,
media & service providers have to come together to develop & promote the cause of sport. My visual
thoughts on the same are captured below:
To develop sports at grass root level, Mahatma Education Society`s sports control board and its
club started many afterschool evening regular sports coaching classes at its centres. There are more
than ten sports disciplines conducted regularly by qualified coaches and also giving the players an
opportunity to compete in their respective training sports discipline. The MES Sports control board
also organize many rural marathons of state level to develop sports at rural level. The MES Inter
Institution sports championship attract large number of students over the years and every year
more sports disciplines added into it. Mahatma Education Society keeps on enrolling outstanding
sports students in sports quota and also gives scholarships to eligible sports students. MES also
uplifts its sports facilities and equipment by staring new sports avenues at its institutions
The Mahatma Education Society has started higher level Sports Management program in
association with FIFA and its Switzerland based University network called CIES. It is the 16th centre
of FIFA/CIES Sports Mgmt in the world, 2nd centre in Asian continent and the one and only at south
Asia. It has become a big attraction of the entire sports mgmt aspirants in South Asia. The MES
Sports control board organizes refresher Sports training courses for its coaches and sports teachers
and also conduct Swimming pool life saving and First aid training for its instructors.
My nation my pride: towards emerging as a sporting superpower we need great programs and
plans, one of which is the recent Khelo-India program, which start yielding results and sporting
success, youth icons, Olympic glory & national pride. We have to demonstrate the passion & the will
to participate in this journey. In conclusion, we need to have the patience and the resolve to ride out
this journey. But we have to build a thought momentum from today.
Padmakshan Padmanabhan Director of Sports
