publish or disseminate. Customer will ensure that anyone who uses the Software does so only in compliance withthe terms of this Agreement. Customer shall not a) use, copy, modify, transfer or distribute the Software except asexpressly authorized; b) reverse assemble, reverse compile, reverse engineer or otherwise translate the Software; c)create derivative works or modifications unless expressly authorized; or d) sublicense, rent or lease the Software.Licensors of intellectual property to Nortel Networks are beneficiaries of this provision. Upon termination or breach ofthe license by Customer or in the event designated hardware or CFE is no longer in use, Customer will promptlyreturn the Software to Nortel Networks or certify its destruction. Nortel Networks may audit by remote polling or otherreasonable means to determine Customer’s Software activation or usage levels. If suppliers of third party softwareincluded in Software require Nortel Networks to include additional or different terms, Customer agrees to abide bysuch terms provided by Nortel Networks with respect to such third party software.

2. Warranty. Except as may be otherwise expressly agreed to in writing between Nortel Networks and Customer,Software is provided "AS IS" without any warranties (conditions) of any kind. NORTEL NETWORKS DISCLAIMSALL WARRANTIES (CONDITIONS) FOR THE SOFTWARE, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUTNOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULARPURPOSE AND ANY WARRANTY OF NON-INFRINGEMENT. Nortel Networks is not obligated to provide support ofany kind for the Software. Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of implied warranties, and, in such event, theabove exclusions may not apply.

3. Limitation of Remedies. IN NO EVENT SHALL NORTEL NETWORKS OR ITS AGENTS OR SUPPLIERS BELIABLE FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: a) DAMAGES BASED ON ANY THIRD PARTY CLAIM; b) LOSS OF, ORDAMAGE TO, CUSTOMER’S RECORDS, FILES OR DATA; OR c) DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL,PUNITIVE, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING LOST PROFITS OR SAVINGS), WHETHER INCONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE) ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THESOFTWARE, EVEN IF NORTEL NETWORKS, ITS AGENTS OR SUPPLIERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THEIRPOSSIBILITY. The forgoing limitations of remedies also apply to any developer and/or supplier of the Software. Suchdeveloper and/or supplier is an intended beneficiary of this Section. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitationsor exclusions and, in such event, they may not apply.

4. General

1. If Customer is the United States Government, the following paragraph shall apply: All Nortel NetworksSoftware available under this License Agreement is commercial computer software and commercialcomputer software documentation and, in the event Software is licensed for or on behalf of the United StatesGovernment, the respective rights to the software and software documentation are governed by NortelNetworks standard commercial license in accordance with U.S. Federal Regulations at 48 C.F.R. Sections12.212 (for non-DoD entities) and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202 (for DoD entities).

2. Customer may terminate the license at any time. Nortel Networks may terminate the license if Customerfails to comply with the terms and conditions of this license. In either event, upon termination, Customermust either return the Software to Nortel Networks or certify its destruction.

3. Customer is responsible for payment of any taxes, including personal property taxes, resulting fromCustomer’s use of the Software. Customer agrees to comply with all applicable laws including all applicableexport and import laws and regulations.

4. Neither party may bring an action, regardless of form, more than two years after the cause of the actionarose.

5. The terms and conditions of this License Agreement form the complete and exclusive agreement betweenCustomer and Nortel Networks.

6. This License Agreement is governed by the laws of the country in which Customer acquires the Software.If the Software is acquired in the United States, then this License Agreement is governed by the laws ofthe state of New York.

Introduction

This guide provides instructions for configuring the Nortel* Metro EthernetRouting Switch 8600 as an aggregation device for Metro Ethernet Services.

ATTENTIONIf you upgrade your Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 (release 3.x) with the NortelMetro Ethernet Services 4.0 software image, the switch can operate as a MetroEthernet aggregation device in the Metro Ethernet Network (MEN). The switch isthereafter referred to as the Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600.For details about upgrading your Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 (release 4.x), seeUpgrading to Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 4.0 Software.

This guide includes information for using the command line interface (CLI)and the Device Manager graphical user interface (GUI) to configure andmanage Metro Ethernet Services on the switch.

Three other key components are also discussed in this guide, which areused along with the Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 to provide a fullcomplement of Metro Ethernet Services:

Configuring an ESU RingThis section describes how to configure a single home ESU ring with bothends of the ring on ESM 8668 module ports on the same system, usingDevice Manager.

Step Action

1 From the Device Manager menu bar, select VPN > ESU > Ring .

The ESU_Ring dialog box appears with the ESU Ring dialog boxdisplayed. See "ESU_Ring dialog box, ESU Ring dialog box" (page14).

2 Click Insert.

The ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box appears. See"ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box" (page 15). Note that only 8ports are available on the ESM 8668 module.

ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box

For information, see "ESU Ring tab and Insert, ESU Ring dialogbox field descriptions" (page 16).

3 Enter a unique ring-name in the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialogbox, Name field.

4 Click the ellipses button in the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialogbox, Primary Port field, to select a primary ring port.

The Primary Port dialog box appears.

Click to select a port, then click Ok.

5 In the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box, Secondary Port field,click the ellipses button to select a secondary ring port.

The Secondary Port dialog box appears. Click to select a port,then click Ok.

6 In the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box, set the interval timervalue in the DiscoverInterval field.

Enter an integer value in the range of 1 to 255 seconds.

7 In the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box, set the AdminStatefield to enable .

8 In the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box, in the VlanIds field,enter the VLAN IDs that you want to be associated with this ring.

9 In the ESU_Ring, Insert Ring dialog box, set the RRPHello field toenable (click the enable radio button).

10 In the ESU_Ring, Insert Ring dialog box, set the RRPHelloIntervaltimer value.

Enter an integer value in the range of 1000 to 10000 milliseconds.

11 In the ESU_Ring, Insert ESU Ring dialog box, click Insert.

The new configuration appears in the ESU_Ring dialog box. See"ESU_Ring dialog box, ESU Ring dialog box" (page 14)..

ESU Ring tab and Insert, ESU Ring dialog box field descriptions

Field Description

Id Creates the Ring ID number. The value ranges from 1 to 254.

Name Creates a unique name for the ESU ring with a string length in therange 0 to 32, which represents the unique ESU ring name.

PrimaryPort Specifies the Primary port of the Metro ESM 8668. This portconnects to the Primary port of the first Metro ESU in the ring.

SecondaryPort Specifies the Secondary port of the Metro ESM 8668. This portconnects to the Secondary port of the last Metro ESU in the ring.

DiscoverInterval Sets the discover-interval timer value in the range 1 to 255, whichrepresents the discover interval-time, in seconds. The default valueis 30 seconds.

AdminState Allows you to administratively enable or disable the ESU ring.

OperState Specifies the OperState for the ring. Appears as one of the followingstates:

• up

• down

If AdminStatusfor the ring is down, then OperStatus should be down.If AdminStatus is changed to up, then OperStatus should change to"normal" if the assigned UNI is AdminState up and OperState up.If the OperState of the ring is up, the IP Endpoint is available totransmit and receive network traffic. If the OperState is down andAdminState is up, it indicates either the UNI is AdminState down or

Field Description

OperState for the UNI is down. If the assigned port (UNI) for the IPEndpoint is connected and link appears to be up, but the OperStatusfor the IP Endpoint still appears down, there is a fault condition forthe IP Endpoint that prevents it from going to the up state.

VlanIds Allows you to enter the VLAN Id for the Metro ESU ring trunk.

Displaying ESU ring RRP statisticsThis section describes how to display ESU ring Request Response Protocol(RRP) statistics.

Step Action

1 From the Device Manager menu bar, select VPN > ESU > Ring.

The ESU_Ring dialog box appears with the ESU Ring tab displayed.See "ESU_Ring dialog box, ESU Ring dialog box" (page 14).

2 Click on a ring.

3 Click the RRP Statistics button.

The RRP Statistics dialog box appears. See "Statistics, RRP, RingID dialog box" (page 17).

To reset the statistics counters, use the Clear Counter button. When youclick this button, all Cumulative, Average, Minimum, Maximum, and LastValcolumns are reset to zero and automatically begin to recalculate statisticaldata.

Device Manager Clear Counter function does not affect the switch’sAbsoluteValue counter. The Clear Counter function clears all cached data inDevice Manager (except AbsoluteValue). To reset AbsoluteValue(s), usethe resetCounter function (Edit > Chassis > System).

RRP Statistics, Ring Id dialog box field descriptions

Field Description

Absolute Value The absolute value of the received/transmitted/dropped octets.

Cumulative The total number of received/transmitted/dropped octets.

Average/Sec The average number of received/transmitted/dropped octets persecond.

Minimum/Sec The minimum number of received/transmitted/dropped octets persecond.

Maximum/Sec The maximum number of received/transmitted/dropped octets persecond.

LastVal/Sec The last value a second received.

PrimaryPortTxRrpHello The number of RRP Hellos sent from the Primary port.

PrimaryPortRxRrpHello The number of RRP Hellos received at the Primary port.

PrimaryPortMissingRrpHello

The number of missing Primary port RRP Hellos.

Field Description

OperState The current operational state of the Metro ESU dual home ring.Appears as one of the following states:

• Normal

• Down

• Cut

If AdminStatus for the ESU Dual Home-Ring is down on eitherthe Primary or the Secondary Metro Routing Switch 8600,then OperStatus should be down on both the Primary andSecondary Routing Switch 8600. If AdminStatus is changed toup on both the Primary and Secondary Metro Routing Switch8600, then OperStatus should change to "normal" if the dualhome ring is operational and intact. If the OperStatus is cut, itindicates a ring break has occurred either within the ring oralong the ESU Ring Trunk (ERT) path. If the OperStatus of thering is either normal or cut, the ring is available to transmit andreceive network traffic. If the ring is intact and the OperStatusstill appears down and AdminState is up, there is a fault withinthe dual home ring path that prevents it from going to the upstate.

RingPortType Allows you to set the ESM Port type to Primary or Secondary.

Port Allows you to enter the port number for the Ban (ESM) Port inthe following format: slot/port.

Displaying Metro ESM 8668 server-port statisticsYour Metro ESM 8668 module provides statistics that can help you monitortraffic utilization on a specified ESM-server port. Each Metro ESM 8668server port can provide a full range of statistics on your Device Managerdisplay, including the last 15 minute interval, hourly, and daily accumulation.

MIBs can maintain up to 24 hours of data per Metro ESM 8668 server port,which you can access. The total number of entries stored per Metro ESM8668 port is 1 440 entries: (24 hours x 60 minutes / Hour x 1 data collection/ minutes = 1440 entries).

Device Manager can display the following current information:

• Last 15-minute statistics

Device Manager can display the previous 15 minutes on each quarterhour. The display includes minimum Bytes/sec, maximum Bytes/sec,and average Bytes/sec, for each 1-minute interval during the last 15minutes.

• Hour level

Device Manager can display the previous hourly statistics, by ESMserver port, for the past 24 hours collected, and up to the last quarterhour (for example, if it is currently 2:15 PM, the display starts at 2:15PM of the previous day). The display includes only the average of theBytes/sec to a granularity of 1 minute, for each 60 minute interval.

If the current or last hour data is a partial hour, the last hour displayed isup to the last quarter hour and the average is for the total partial minutes

When adding a VLAN, this command adds both Primary and Secondaryring ports. When removing a VLAN, this command removes the Primaryand Secondary ring ports from the specified VLAN.

add <vid> Adds the specified VLANs to the ESU ring.

CLI still uses the older term for IBT (intra-BAN trunk) in place of ESU ringtrunk.

When adding a VLAN, this command adds ring ports. When removing aVLAN, this command removes the ring ports from the specified VLAN.

where

vid is an integer value in the range 1 and 4 094, that represents theunique VLAN identification number.integer is an integer value in the range 1 and 254, that represents theunique ESU ring identification number.ibtvlan-true when appended with the add-ring option designatesthis VLAN ID as the dual home ring IBT-VID. This command applies onlyto dual home rings. When the IBT or MLT port for the dual home ringis defined, and this attribute is used on the add-ring command, theIBT or MLT port is added to the VLAN and the dual home ring IBT-VIDparameter is automatically set to this VLAN ID.

Configuring the Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 repeater featureTo configure the repeater functionality in the switch for MAC regeneration oftraffic data over long haul connections, use the following command:

Parameter Description

Starting with port 1 at the least significant bit position, a "1" representsthe port is Up, a "0" indicates the port is Down. (For example, 00001000indicates that port 5 is Up.)

Port Config: identifies the ports that are configured to support VPN andIP services. A "1" indicates the port is configured to support VPN and IPservices. A "0" indicates the port does not support either VPN or IP services.

Port Status: The above display indicates that there are more ports thanavailable on the ESU. The left most significant bits represent internal virtualports. For example, port 28 is the ESU management port.

The state of the uplink ports, when in ring mode or in standalone mode, isalways zero.

PORT Indicates the ring port.

IBT-PORT/MLT Indicates the trunk ring port.

IBT VLAN Indicates the ring VLAN.

INTERVAL Indicates the time interval, in seconds, used to discoverport states.

ADMIN STATUS Indicates the specified ring’s administrative state.

OPER STATUS Indicates the specified ring’s operational state.

VLAN IDS Indicates the ID name of the VLAN

RRP-HELLOSTATUS

Indicates if RRP is enabled or disabled on the ring.

RRP-HELLOINTERVAL

Indicates the RRP-Hello timer interval in milliseconds.

PARTNER-PORT-MAC

Indicates the MAC address of the associated ESU unit.

show esu-dh-ring record [ <ring-id> ]

where

ring-id is the (optional) unique identification number that identifies theESU ring you are creating. Enter an integer value between 1 and 254.

Parameter Description

IP ADDR Indicates the management IP address of the ESU.

PORT USED Indicates that the ring is active on both ports.

OPER STATUS Indicates the ring’s operational status.

POSITION Indicates the (physical) port position within the ring,starting from the Primary port.

The Port Used parameter provides an indication of where a ring cut exists inrelation to this ESU. The Possible Values parameter includes:

• Ring: indicates that ring is closed and operating normally

• Sec: indicates that the ring is cut and that this ESU’s only path is throughthe Secondary ring port (for example, the cut is upstream of this ESU)

• Pri: indicates that the ring is cut and that this ESU’s only path is throughthe Primary ring port (for example, the cut is downstream of this ESU)

Showing esu-dh-ring port-stateTo display information about specified ESU ring port-states, use thefollowing command:

show esu-dh-ring port-state [ <ring-id> ]

where

The following table describes the show esu-dh-ring port-statecommand parameters.

show esu-dh-ring port-state command parameters

Parameter Description

PORT CONFIG Four groups of binary integers with positional notation, which graphicallyrepresents ports that are configured:

Starting with port 1 at the least significant bit position, a "1" representsthe port is configured, a "0" indicates the port is not configured. (Forexample, 00001000 indicates that port 5 is configured.)

PORT STATUS Four groups of binary integers with positional notation, which graphicallyrepresents the port status:

Starting with port 1 at the least significant bit position, a "1" representsthe port is Up, a "0" indicates the port is Down. (For example, 00001000indicates that port 5 is Up.)

Port Config: identifies the ports that are configured to support VPN andIP services. A "1" indicates the port is configured to support VPN and IPservices. A "0" indicates the port does not support either VPN or IP services.

Port Status: The above display indicates that there are more ports thanavailable on the ESU. The left most significant bits represent internal virtualports. For example, port 28 is the ESU management port.

The state of the uplink ports, when in ring mode or in standalone mode, isalways zero.

Showing standalone ESU informationTo display statistical information about a standalone ESU configuration,use the following command:

show esu-standalone info [ <port> ]

where

port is an optional parameter that indicates the slot/port number of aspecific ESU configuration.

Parameter Description

Showing ESM 8668 server-port informationYour Metro ESM 8668 module provides statistics that can help you monitortraffic utilization on a specified ESM-server port. Each Metro ESM 8668server port can provide a full range of statistics, including the last 15 minuteinterval, hourly, and daily accumulation.

MIBs can maintain up to 24 hours of data per Metro ESM 8668 server port,which you can access. The total number of entries stored per Metro ESM8668 port is 1 440 entries: (24 hours x 60 minutes / Hour x 1 data collection/ minutes = 1440 entries).

CLI can display the following current information:

• Last 15-minute statistics

CLI can display the previous 15 minutes on each quarter hour. Thedisplay includes minimum Bytes/sec, maximum Bytes/sec, and averageBytes/sec, for each 1-minute interval during the last 15 minutes.

• Hour level

CLI can display the previous hourly stats, by ESM server port, for thepast 24 hours collected, and up to the last quarter hour (for example, if itis currently 2:15 PM, the display starts at 2:15 PM of the previous day).The display includes only the average of the Bytes/sec to a granularity of1 minute, for each 60 minute interval.

If the current or last hour data is a partial hour, the last hour displayed isup to the last quarter hour and the average is for the total partial minutesreceived (for example, if the last hour entry is 2:00 to 2:14, average isfor the 15-minute interval, not 60).

• CLI can display the previous 24-hour statistics, by ESM server port.The display includes only the average of the bytes per second to agranularity of 1 minute. For a 24-hour period, this is for the last 1 440data statistics collected per ESM server port.

To show ESM 8668 server-port statistics, use the following command:

show esm

The following table describes the show esm command parameters.

show esm command parameters

show esmfollowed by:

info <port> [legacy<port> ] [uni <value> ]

Shows uni ID and associated legacy port info for the selectedserver port, where:

• port is the ESM or legacy port.

• value is the UNI ID in IP notation.

stats <port> Shows server port stats per min up to last 1440 minute, where:

• esm port is the ESM or legacy port.

stats-last-15minute [<port> ]

Shows last fifteen minutes of stats collected for the serverports, where:

• esm port is the ESM or legacy port.

stats-hour-level [<port> ]

Shows hourly of stats collected for the server ports over thepast 24 hours, where:

• esm port is the ESM or legacy port.

stats-daily-level [<port> ]

Shows daily stats for the server port, up to the nearest 15minutes collected over 24 hours, where:

• esm port is the ESM or legacy port.

clear esm stats [ <port>]

Clears ESM server port statistics, where:

• esm port is the ESM or legacy port.

To clear ESM statistics, use the following command:

clear esm stats { <ports> }

where:

• ports is a port or range of ports in the format x:x

• if no ports are specified, the statistics for all ports are cleared.

Showing the VLACP port configurationTo show information about the VLACP port configuration:

show port info vlacp [vlan <value>][port <value> ]

where

vlan <value> indicates a VLAN IDports <value> indicates the list of ports in the format slot/port.

Parameter Description

INDEX Displays the index number of the VLACP port.

ADMIN ENABLED Indicates whether or not VLACP is enabled on the specified port.

PORT STATE Indicates the state (up or down) of the port.

OPER ENABLED Displays whether or not VLACP operations are enabled.

FAST TIME Displays the VLACPDU exchange fast-periodic-time value. These valuescan range from 25 to 20000 milliseconds.

SLOW TIME Displays the VLACPDU exchange slow-periodic-time value. Thesevalues can range from 10000 to 30000 milliseconds.

TIMEOUT TIME Displays the timeout time.

TIMEOUT SCALE Displays the specified time to bring the port down. These times canrange from 1 to 10 milliseconds.

ETHER TYPE Displays the Ethertype value of the VLACP frame.

MAC ADDRESS Displays the MAC address of the VLACPDU from an end-to-endperspective.
