Manager’s Message

As we approach the end of 2015, the club is buzzing with activ-ity.

Our annual Co-ed Curling Clinic was very popular again this year. Thanks to Terry

Repol and his merry band of volunteer instructors, we have 31 new members with many of them joining multiple leagues. Please make all of them very welcome here

at Tam.

Hope everyone has had a chance to do some sampling over the last couple of weeks

as we explore some potential new offerings for our bar. We’ve already added:

Farmhouse cider – a classic Ontario style cider with a dry, smooth taste. It’s gluten free with no artificial flavouring

Hurry Hard amber lager – smooth, full-bodied and flavourful. The next time you yell

“Hurry Hard” someone might just bring you a beer!

The Monday Business Women have also put the wines of Pillitteri Estates to the test.

If you haven’t tried one of these new additions, why not do a sampling of your own and order one (or two) after your next game.

With Christmas fast approaching, whether you’re just starting your shopping or al-

most done, why not pick up something nice for yourself at our Pro Shop. We still

have a few Tam turtlenecks available at a ridiculously low price of $19.95 for those of you lucky enough to be size XL or XXL. We also have limited quantities of T-shirts

(long and short sleeved), polo-style shirts (long and short sleeved), and a few re-maining golf shirts. A Tam keychain, pin, or crest might also make a nice stalking-

stuffer. Or maybe your team seems to be coming up light on a lot of important draws lately, a sure sign that a new broomhead belongs on your Christmas list. If you’re a

Skip or Vice, make sure it’s fluorescent orange or yellow; easier for your team to see (and hopefully hit).

Every few weeks or so, a member asks me about making special offers to their fellow

Tam members (i.e. group insurance, product/service discounts, etc.). I recently brought this to the Board for their consideration and, although the Board likes the

idea of members supporting fellow members in this way, the Board was wary of be-ing seen as “endorsing” certain products.

Members wanting to advertise to fellow members are encouraged to do so via wall signage and advertising in the monthly Tam newsletter. Just call or come into the of-

fice to arrange. And as we do with all our bonspiel sponsors, we encourage our mem-bers to, in-turn, support these sponsors and advertisers with their business.

Tam’s annual New Years Eve Gala will be taking place on, you guessed it, December

31st. This is an evening with great food, lots of fun, dancing and prizes. Tickets are now on sale. So if you are looking for a terrific party to ring in the New Year, don’t

wait; contact the office to get your tickets before it’s too late.

Speaking of Christmas and New Years, please watch the monitors above the bar and

in the tennis vestibule as well as signs on the entrance doors where we will be posting exactly when the Club will be open during the upcoming Holiday season.

Lots happening and much more to come. For now though, on behalf of all the staff, I

want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, safe, and happy New Year !!!

We're half way through the season and we'd love to invite the new members to take advantage of what the kitchen has to offer and thank the regulars for their continued patronage. November has come and gone and just like that we're into the busy season of the holiday cheer. Movember was a great success although I had to endure a month of horrendous facial hair. Thanks to you, the club members, we raised a grand total of $1,100.00 for prostate cancer. Through our actions, awareness was raised around the often ignored issues of men's health.

For those not wanting to travel far this New Year's Eve come to Tam for our great festivities. You'll

be treated to good food and good music. So come and join us and cheer in the New Year.

If you’re rushing from work, the kitchen window is always a good way to grab a quick bite before going on the ice. For those who would like to eat after your game, place your order before going on the ice and the kitchen will have it ready for you when you are finished your game. February, the month of love is on its way. Treat your loved one to a romantic dinner. Look for our posted menu in January and treat your sweetie. Tables can be reserved by calling the kitchen. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience as we employed and trained a whole new compliment of staff for this season. Most of you have met Velicia from the kitchen and waiting tables during the day. We also have Kathleen (Kat), working either at the window or during banquets. So say hello and welcome them to the Club.

Welcome Clinic Curlers By the time you read this we will have completed the first draw of the season. Hope it was a good one for you! We are now settled into our second draw groupings and we welcome new teams/players who have made the transition from the Clinic to league play. Glad to have you aboard. It can be a bit overwhelming as you try to put into practice all you learned. Please remember to ask ques-tions regarding rules, etiquette, strategy and technique. Everyone in the Mixed Section wants to be sure you have a good time. If you would prefer you can also e-mail the section at [email protected]

The Grey Cup Warm Up Bonspiel After much debate it was decided to go ahead with the bonspiel with sixteen (16) teams. With just one draw format changes were made to ensure that everyone would have an enjoyable day. Thanks to all the teams here at Tam and from outside clubs who supported the event. Results were not available at the time of writing. We’ll have those for you in the next newsletter. The Happiness Is… Bonspiel – February 27, 2016 It’s now time to get ready for our next Mixed Spiel Happiness Is… coming up on Saturday, February 27, 2016. Mark that date in your calendar and watch for registration forms which will be available on the Mixed Section bulletin board by the men’s locker room. Take It or Trade It Fun Night Our first of three fun nights was held on Friday, November 20th. Take It or Trade It saw teams vying for a variety of delightful gifts. If you at first selected a baby blue gripper, you could trade that for a bottle of red or white wine (quite popular), Bayley’s, or the always popular $30.00 LCBO gift card. For some reason competition wasn’t as fierce for the wooden spoons, the bag of microwave popcorn, and the microfiber cleaning cloths. Be sure to watch for our next fun night coming up in the New Year during our second draw. Jitneys This is curling strictly for fun. Put a team together ….. bring your family and friends and introduce them to curling. Price includes two hours of ice time, snacks and a DJ. At $160.00 per sheet of ice, it’s the best deal in town. Sign up, come out and have a great time. Dates: January 9th, February 6th, March 5th & 19th.. Ice is available at 7:00 (wait listed at this time) and 9:00 p.m. Spots are filling up. Contact Heather Darroch at [email protected] to book. cont’d…..page 7

Mixed Report

We Need You!

The Mixed Committee is always looking for new members. Many hands make light work and that is particu-larly true as we plan and present our bonspiels, fun nights and jitneys and stay connected to members of the Mixed Section. We welcome your help in whatever capacity you might choose to work. Contact any one member of the Mixed Committee or e-mail at [email protected] to get more information about the opportunities available. Another way to support the Mixed Section is through Sponsorship. Sponsorship money (from $100.00 on up) helps to cover off those ‘extras’ we like to provide such as bar snacks on special occasions; great draw and raffle prizes for our bonspiels and fun nights. You sponsor us and we highlight you and/or your organization with special mention at all events and a profile in the newsletter (see below). Once again contact any one of us to talk more. Finally, do you have any items at home that you are hoping to ‘regift’ someday? Well now is your opportunity. The Mixed Committee would love it – one man’s regift is another’s reward. We do need the item to be in gift-giving condition. Also if you have any baskets we will take those as well. You can bring these items to the office and indicate they are for the Mixed Committee. We will pick them up there. Thanks! Our Sponsors

This year we will be highlighting our sponsors as a regular part of our newsletter update. First up.

Scarborough Van Outfitters – Steve McLennan and Wendy White

Wendy remembers coming to a Happiness Is..Bonspiel while a member at Scarborough and being so im-

pressed by the atmosphere – so warm and friendly - that she and Steve decided to join Tam. They have

been members since 2002 and have been sponsors for most of those years. They feel strongly about sup-

porting the club to ensure all the activities, such as the bonspiels, continue with the quality that first attracted

them to Tam. They also appreciate the acknowledgement they get for the support they give.

Congratulations go out to Steve and Wendy as their business, Scarborough Van Outfitters, will be celebrating

its 20th anniversary in 2016. They turn regular vehicles into work trucks by adding shelving, lighting, partitions

and other accessories, customizing to the needs of the individual business. In addition they provide accesso-

ries for cars and trucks such as remote starters, alarms, etc. Do give them a call if you have such a need!

Thanks to Steve and Wendy for their ongoing support of Tam Heather! Be sure to show your appreciation when you see them.

Curling Tips

This year we are highlighting tips that will help speed the games along to get 8 ends in by the bell.

This month’s tip: Skips can help to speed up rock clean up by ensuring rocks that are hit out of play are

placed in order in the correct rock holding area.

Till next time Hurry Hard!

WHAT'S NEW? Check out the new display screen in the foyer of the bubble, for up to date messages from management, and other useful communications. It's a great way for you to get your word out there too, so if you wish to have an announcement featured on the screen, please let Janet in the office know. For your viewing pleasure, there is also a display set mounted in the bar area of the clubhouse.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEONS If you have not yet indicated that you will attend your particular league's luncheon, please do so as soon as possible. Enjoy!

SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS The Venerables are once again collecting unwrapped toys, and non-perishable foods. Please help them to make a difference. The above mentioned goods should be placed in the large box, in front of the bar.

NEW YEAR GALA The very popular New Year's Eve Gala, held on Tam premises, gets quickly sold out, as it is truly an event of excellent value, with a great menu, music for all tastes, and spot prizes. Look for more information in this newsletter. Tennis players tend to be under represented at this affair, so we are hoping that more of you will join us this year. Reservations and payment can be made in the office. Let Janet know that you wish to sit with/near the other tennis folks.

November 17th - 19th, 2015 - TCA Day Women’s Championships

The TCA Day Women’s Championships is an Annual event that brings together Day Women from across the GTA and beyond. It offers newer members a great opportunity to visit other clubs and while this event attracts some very talented curlers it is intended as a fun spiel with club teams in mind. This is a three-day bonspiel with two divisions: Open Event of 32 teams and Senior Event of 16 teams. Seniors are players aged 60+ as of December 31, 2015. You do not have to be members of the same club to enter - just over 19 years of age. All teams play the first three games at various clubs in the GTA. Twelve Open and 10 Senior teams survive the Wednesday games and are invited to play in a final championship game on Thursday and to attend the prizes and awards ceremony and dinner at this year’s host club, Bayview Golf & Country Curling Club. cont’d…..page 11

EASTERN GTA MAJOR LEAGUE This is a new inter club Day Ladies’ competitive league starting up this curling season. It is a great oppor-tunity to promote women’s inter-club curling, and thanks to Chris, Linda, Sandra and Pam for getting it started. Report by Chris Hughes We are starting this year with 4 clubs, Annandale, Oshawa Golf, Tam Heather and Ux-bridge. We invited Oshawa Downtown, Whitby and Port Perry to participate, Oshawa Downtown de-clined our offer, Whitby never returned any phone calls or emails directed to them re this league and Port Perry said they could not participate this year but would like to be included in discussions for next year. We have agreed on the following (at least for the inaugural year to get the league going): to play a round robin format with a fun day and luncheon at the end of the "season",

that each year there will be an overall host club that the overall host club provide the convenor for that year, host the fun day and closing luncheon that each club will take a turn at being the overall host club that each club have a rep that will be the contact for that club that we play one game a month and each month the games will be played at a different participat-

ing club that the team entry fee is $100 this year that the league has to be self sufficient that the only request we are making of our home clubs is that we have access to ice time to host

one set of games a year that this year the league would only take one team from each participating club that each club would

decide which team would represent them in the league (there were discussions of playoffs or a lot-tery or just recruiting a team)

this year Tam is the overall host club and I am the convenor (Chris Hughes) with Linda Epping as-sisting me in getting the league up and running

the games are going to be played on December 16th at Oshawa Golf, Jan 20th at Annandale, Feb 2nd at Uxbridge and the fun day / luncheon on March 30th at Tam Heather - hopefully these will not change, we have had some difficulty getting ice time

we have agreed on a set of rules for the league we are going to review what worked and what did not at the end of the year if not before ice avail-

ability/cost will be key in the expansion of the league discussions in the future this year the Tam team will be Christine Hughes, Linda Epping, Pam Casey and Sandra

Gramma’s Corner There is always lots of talk over coffee of grandchildren and busy Grammas. The thrill of new babies never loses its Wonder - so here’s some news of new baby’s born and new babies to come. Diana Ranken - a new grand daughter, Katelyn, born November 3, 2015, a baby sister for brothers Braeden (7), Connor (5), and Keegan (2) – needless to say, a busy household and a handful for Nana!

Mom Kersti curls in the Business Women on Monday nights and Nana is on hand at the club to mind the babe while she curls. Shirley Miller - Emma Marie finally arrived on November 16, weighing in at 8lbs 9oz. She and Katelyn (Kersti's new daughter) will grow up as good friends, just as Kersti and Erin have

since elementary school. Erin & her husband Jim have curled mixed at Tam with Kersti & Jeff the past three years. As a first time grandmother, I look forward to lots of "Grammie" pointers from all the experi-enced grandmothers at Tam. Marion Taylor - My younger daughter, Regan, had a son Alex Taylor Lima born last November. He has a big sister Selina age 3 1/2. My son Ross, has a daughter Kadence age 5 1/2. There are no new ba-bies on the way this year - just two weddings! Sue Woods - Sue is expecting her first Grandchild due in January with Great Anticipation.

Suggestions for keeping the game moving There is a list of suggestions for courteous and timely play posted on the bulletin board outside the La-dies Locker Room and Pam Casey is announcing one suggestion off the list on Thursday mornings be-fore going on the ice. There are a lot of good ideas to keep the game moving, which makes the game more enjoyable for everyone. Some of the Suggestions:

Curlers should be on the ice at 8:55 ready to throw the first rock. You must be off the ice at 11:15 so please keep the game moving along in a timely manner in order to be able to complete 8 ends of curling.

Leads and Seconds always be in the hack ready to throw your rock when it’s your turn. Throwing devices - ie: sticks or support crutch. Consider having a device set at each end at the

beginning of the game to avoid the extra trip down the ice to retrieve the item. Seconds set up the Skip’s rock ready to throw Vices watch the clock and remind everyone if the team is falling behind Skips try to keep the ‘thinking time’ short

Enjoy the Game and Good Curling to Everyone!

Reminder - Tues. December 15 – Christmas Spiel Two six-end games, short coffee break between games, followed by lunch

and prizes - sign up sheet in the club
