Advent Lessonsfrom

Pastor Robert Moss

The Advent season is a time for us to think about what Jesus’ coming toearth means. Advent puts us into the redemption story, as we picture hu-manity’s longing for God to help. We can hear this longing as the prophet Isa-iah intercedes on behalf of his nation. Isaiah 64:1, 5-9. 1 “Oh, that you wouldburst from the heavens and come down! How the mountains would quake inyour presence! You welcome those who gladly do good, who follow godly ways. But you have been very angry with us, for we are not godly. We are constantsinners; how can people like us be saved? We are all infected and impure withsin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like thewind. Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins. And yet, OLord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all areformed by your hand. Don’t be so angry with us, Lord. Please don’t remem-ber our sins forever. Look at us, we pray, and see that we are all your people.”(New Living Translation).

Isaiah chapter 64 begins with a cry for God to burst upon the earth onceagain. The question is, would God do this again? However, there is the real-ization of the stain of sin that is impossible for the people to remove them-selves. This separates us from God and therefore the situation remainshopeless (Isaiah 64:5-6). Although the situation may seem hopeless theprophet Isaiah does not give up (Isa. 64:8-9). He calls on God to not remem-ber our sins forever.

As we picture this longing for God to do something about our sin, let yourmind move ahead to that day recorded in the Gospels where we see God hasheard our prayers and come down to earth! John 1:14 tells of when the Wordbecame flesh and made his home among us. In Matthew 1:20b–21 we read:“Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as yourwife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she willhave a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people fromtheir sins.” (NLT)

Galatians 4:4–5 says, “But when the right time came, God sent his Son,born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us whowere slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.”(NLT) Jesus the Christ has come and Christmas is a celebration of his birth.God has heard and he has come down to be among us.

At advent we are also reminded that God has not only come among us, buthe has acted on our behalf so our sins can be forgiven and forgotten. Isaiah53:5–6, “He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our pun-ishment, he made us completely well. All of us were like sheep that had wan-dered off. We had each gone our own way, but the Lord gave him thepunishment we deserved.” (CEV)

Advent is a time to reawaken the wonder of what God the Father has donein offering us salvation through sending Jesus Christ; but there is more.

We need to realize that he is still calling people to himself. There are peo-ple around us still living in their own Isaiah chapter 64. “God I wish youwould come down like the Bible says you used to, could this really happen?God, do I matter to you?” How would you answer a family member or a friendwho has these questions? Advent gives us the opportunity to let the goodnews of Christmas come alive in someone’s heart.

Yes, God has heard your cry, he has come down and he took your place andmine on a cross so we might be forgiven and made clean. Will you accept thisgift? Are you living in the fullness of this gift? Are you sharing this gift?

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year, from Pastor RobertMoss and the Congregation of Esterhazy Baptist Church.

Christmas in other countriesby Jaime RiegerThese last few years

have seen a great boostin the population of Es-terhazy. School enroll-ment has beenincreasing every semes-ter and housing hasnever been in such highdemand. Esterhazy hasdrawn families from ourhome country of Canada, but there have beenmany that have travelledfrom distant countries to

settle here. After a quick survey of

the schools, the conclu-sion is that there are anumber of students thatdo not speak English. They are a small minor-ity but they do representall corners of the earth. Some students are Ger-man, Taiwanese, Fil-ipino, or Russian. Thereare also families fromSouth Africa, France,Mexico, and the U. S. A.

We can’t forget ourfriends from India andChina, and must realizethe important role thesefamilies play in our com-munity.

Since Esterhazy is partof this free country ofCanada, people who livehere are able to celebratetheir own holidays theway they see fit. Thereare a majority of peoplewho live here that cele-brate the Christian holi-

day of Christmas, but itdoes not mean that peo-ple in other countries dothe same. Written overthe next few pages is justa sampling of how somepeople in Esterhazy willbe celebrating the holi-day season this year. Insome cases, the studentswrote in their native lan-guage, and then trans-lated it into English.

Most people in Chinadon’t celebrate Christ-mas. But everyone cele-brates Chinese NewYear. Chinese New Yearbegins on Feb. 10 andlasts for seven days. Thefirst thing our familydoes is prepare the foodfor the parade. The food

is: roast chicken, ba-nanas, oranges andgrapes, plus many othertypes of food. Some activ-ities you can do andwatch is the lion danceand fireworks. You willget some money fromyour relatives they willgive you red envelopewith money in it.

have their ChristmasSales. When the daycomes in like Dec. 15 (Ithink), churches areopening early in themorning (1:00 a.m.) for amass about Christ, andends at noon. In Philip-pines, many vendorsstarted to sell nuts, cashews, pistachio, andrice cakes in the malls,

and as well at beside ofthe churches. At the oneday before Christmas, many children are goinghouses to houses andsing a Christmas carol toget a little Christmasgift, most of them givesmoney, other gives toys, and several people givesnothing. Now, in mid-night, families are gath-

Filipinos celebrate thelongest Christmas sea-son in the world, as soonas it is “Ber” ( as in Sep-temBer), festive Christ-mas carols begin to playon the radio, and Christ-mas decorations begin toappear.

The Christmas songsplay until Three KingsDay (first Sunday of Jan-uary) and the decora-tions stay even longer, sometimes up to Febru-ary.

We also have “Karol-

ing” or serenade neigh-bors, friends and bene-factors with Christmascarols to spread holidaycheers, and the carolerswill receive a rewardwith cash or snacks.

We have “SimbangGabi”. It is a daily massfor nine days, held atdawn beginning Decem-ber 16. Outside thechurch you can eat Fil-ipino food like “putobumbong” (sticky ricesteamed inside a smallbamboo tube), “bibingka”(rice cake with saltedeggs and fresh coconut),and “suman” (steamedrice wrapped in banana

leaves).We attend midnight

mass on Christmas Eve,gather with friends andrelatives for “NocheBuena” at midnight. Thisfestive meal is followedby exchange gifts. Insome provinces, watchthe “Panuluyan” in thetown plaza on ChristmasEve, this a re-enactmentof Joseph and Mary’sjourney to Bethlehem toportrays the difficultythey encountered alongthe way and the joyousbirth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas in Ukraine:Christmas is a wonder-

ful holiday, it’s a feast ofChrist’s birth and it’s cel-ebrated on the eve of 7thof January according tothe Gregorian calendar

as in most of other Or-thodox Christian coun-tries. For the Ukrainianpeople Christmas is themost important family

holiday of the whole year.

Holy Supper: There are12 courses in the Supper, because according to theChristian tradition, eachcourse is dedicated to oneof Christ’s apostles. Ac-cording to the ancientpagan belief, each course

stood was for every fullmoon during the courseof the year. The coursesare meatless becausethere is a period of fast-ing required by thechurch until ChristmasDay. However, for the pa-

gans the meatless disheswere a form of bloodlesssacrifice to the gods. Thedishes were served in thefollowing order: beans, fish, boiled potato, dumplings, cabbage rolls, kutya, potatoes mashed

with garlic, stewed fruit, plums with beans andsome other dishes.

Christmas Tradition: Akolach (Christmas bread)is placed in the center ofthe table. This bread isbraided into a ring, and

three such rings areplaced one on top of theother, with a candle inthe center of the top one.The three rings symbol-

ize the Trinity and thecircular form representsEternity.

A didukh (meaninggrandfather) is a sheaf ofwheat stalks or made ofmixed grain stalks. It isplaced under the icons inthe house. In Ukraine, this is a very importantChristmas tradition, be-cause the stalks of grainsymbolize all the ances-tors of the family, and itis believed that theirspirits reside in it duringthe holidays.

After the didukh is po-sitioned in the place of

honor, the father or headof the household places abowl of kutia (boiledwheat mixed with poppyseeds and honey) next toit. Kutia is the most im-portant food of the entireChristmas Eve Supper, and is also called God’sFood. A jug of uzvar(stewed fruits, whichshould contain 12 differ-ent fruits) and is calledGod’s Drink, is alsoserved.

Christmas is the holi-

day when all members ofthe family gather to-gether. This is the holi-day of joy. Comparativelywith Great Britain andsome other countriesUkrainian people don’texchange presents onthis holiday. For manyyears only religious peo-ple observed this holiday, but today it’s an officialstate holiday. Childrenlike to have fun on thisholiday, they go fromdoor to door, sing carols

people give sweets tothem. As it was alreadymentioned, kutia is a tra-ditional UkrainianChristmas dish. It’scooked by mothers andgodchildren take it totheir godparents. Al-though this holiday ap-peared long ago butnowadays many peoplestill like to go to churchand listen to Christmassermons :)

And in despair I bowed myhead:There is no peace on earth, IsaidFor hate is strong and mocksthe songOf peace on earth, good willto men.

As you celebrate the holiday season, please make safety a part of everything you do.
