Interruption to power supply

Ausgrid is carrying out essential upgrade and maintenance work on the local electricity network supplying the zone substation at Merriwa.

In order to safely carry out this work we need to interrupt power supply for customers in areas west of Sandy Hollow on Sunday 27th November 2016 between 8.30am and 4.00pm, weather permitting. The areas affected will include Gungal, Giants Creek, Worondi, Merriwa Town, Coulsons Creek, Flags Road, Idaville, Bow, Flight Springs and Merriwa.

We apologise for the inconvenience this essential work may cause. Our aim is to minimise disruption caused during the work, however the times listed may change in the event of unforeseen circumstances or weather.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

It was an honour to attend the official Merriwa service with our primary and secondary school leaders last Friday. Our secondary leaders, James Hagley and Breanna Goodear, were guest speakers, while our primary leaders, Tamika Drury and William Whitby, laid a wreath on behalf of our entire school community.

KINDERGARTEN-YEAR 6 ASSEMBLY

The primary students again commemorated Remembrance Day at our school assembly last Friday afternoon. The Year 4/5 class performed a dramatic version of the poem “In Flanders Field”, and our school leaders led all students and guests in a thoughtful service. A number of special awards were also presented during the assembly, including our first Gold awards for the year.

LEAGUE TAG

Two Year 6 students, Kyarne Sampson and Tahli Gleeson, have organised a lunch time league tag competition for all students in Years 3-6. The competition runs on Wednesdays and Fridays, and has four mixed teams participating. Watch this space for updates on the progress of the competition, and well done to both girls for their efforts in arranging such a fun lunchtime event.

Year: Year 10

Shai is a talented art student who always produces work of a high standard. Throughout the year in her Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media electives, Shai has created ceramic sculptures and pottery, paintings and digitally manipulated images that show her artistic talents. In these paintings, we can see re-interpretations of Modernist artworks such as Matisse and Warhol.

Secondary ReportJUST PAST HALF WAY

We are now just past half way through the term and many classes are now switching to their final topics of this year. This means we are past the hard and rigorous topics and on to the more thought provoking and controversial parts of the science courses. These ideas are core to understanding science as it is applied and experienced in our everyday lives.

The Year 7/8 class will be finishing the forces lessons, all their practical activities and start looking at the science skills in more detail and thinking about how we interpret those results.

Year 8 have finished a mammoth 11 weeks of chemistry and are thinking about how the end user can lead and how science gets adopted outside the laboratory is going to be a breath of fresh air.

Year 9 will have a rapid change of pace going from looking at the slow process of how the earth builds continents, mountains and oceans to the very fast process of how the earth changes its weather (last Sunday was fascinating wasn’t it).

For the HSC students there has been a different kind of change of pace. It’s hard to believe that this is it. What we do now counts to that big lurking HSC monster that seemed ages away just last term. Senior Science are beginning their final year with Lifestyle Chemistry. This topic is looking at all the chemistry products in our homes like cleaning, cosmetics, and gardening supplies and sees what chemical properties make them useful. Chemistry has begun with the topic, Production of Materials. This topic is about many different classes of chemicals like fuels, plastics, alcohols, the chemistry of batteries and the chemistry of nuclear medicines.

It is sad to see this year coming to a close so soon I wish it could go on forever. I miss the Year 12’s who have all grown up and proven what they’re capable of. On the up side next year looks like being another good year. The Year 6’s joining us on the secondary campus look like they will be great school ambassadors. I can’t wait to see them involved in the various sporting and community activities that will be run next year.

St Joseph’s Primary School

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day ceremonies were truly respectful and meaningful experiences for students of St Joeys last Friday. The Stage 3 students attended the town service at the cenotaph and laid a wreath on behalf of our school community. They were extremely proud and excited to listen to ex-student James Hagley give the occasional address at the ceremony. Thank you Mr Brion Booth, President of the Merriwa RSL Sub Branch.

At school the rest of the students held a very moving Remembrance service in the MacKillop Room before laying flowers at our own flagpole and observing a minute’s silence in Remembrance. Each student laid a flower at the base of the flagpole where white crosses of remembrance were placed for the local Merriwa and district soldiers who lost their lives at war. Thank you to Mrs Hagley for your thoughtful preparation of this event.

We’ve got you covered in the Upper Hunter! Mental Health First Aid is increasingly important as the society experiences soaring mental illness and alarmingly increasing rates of mental illness and suicide in young people. Schools are recognised as being places where students spend a great deal of their time and therefore often display mental health symptoms. The recently formed “Where There’s a Will” group is working at breakneck pace to raise the awareness of this issue in the Upper Hunter and to assist schools in taking an active role in addressing the problem.

Miss Farrow and I have just attended a weekend Mental Health First Aid course at St Joseph’s Aberdeen. This was initiated and funded by “Where There’s a Will”. We were joined by 30 teachers from across the Upper Hunter. The course was incredibly useful and with representative from St Joseph’s Merriwa and Aberdeen as well as Merriwa Central and Scone Grammar participating, it is very reassuring to know that your children will be supported by dedicated teachers in all of the schools within our “village”. Schools are recognised as being a crucial place for supporting parents to develop in their children’s skills such as resilience to promote good mental health.

We know that all teachers are pretty amazing, but we do need to give a massive high five to those who are going well above and beyond their call of duty by participating in the training this weekend.

We can’t rely on teachers to help our kids on their own, they need the rest of the community supporting them and helping to prevent the mental health problems arising in the first place.

That’s why we need as many people as possible to attend the ‘Positive Education’ information session at Scone High School on Monday 28 November (6.30-8.30pm).

This will showcase how everyone in the Upper Hunter can work together to reduce suicide and mental illness.

Jump Strategy, Cube Strategy, Split Strategy and Compensation Strategy! What do all of these have in common?

These were just some of the things many parents learned at last week’s maths night for parents. Parents in partnership with the school is alive and strong at St Joseph’s. What a night! There was 100% concentration as parents l e a r n e d strategies to use to do addition and subtraction problems from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3. All parents were very grateful for this valuable l e a r n i n g

Total engagement describes the students at St Joseph’s Merriwa last week when ex-student Eliza Peebles gave them a sneak peak at her performance of “Don’t rain on my Parade”. This song is Eliza’s audition song for the 2017 ASPIRE program. It was wonderful for us all to witness

the development of Eliza’s singing technique since her singing role in the St Joseph Merriwa plays such as “Bully Bull Ring”, “Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat” and a “World of Stories”. The children asked Eliza many thoughtful questions about voice and performance training. At St Joseph’s Aberdeen, Eliza has continued to explore singing and drama as part of the school production “Hairspray” as well as ASPIRE productions “Stranger Than Fiction” and “There’s Something Strange About Marvin McRae” along with “Dio Sounds” and school choir opportunities. Congratulations Eliza.

“Footy Colours” were worn by all students and teachers last week as the school raised money to help support cancer research. This day was instigated by Patrick Magner in Year 6. Congratulations Patrick on seeing a need in society and doing something about it.

SUN SAFE POLICY

As many of you are aware, we follow a sun safe policy at school. This includes practices such as:

• Limiting outdoor activities during the heat of the day;

• Wearing hats; Providing sun screen when outside for extended periods of time

• Ensuring children who do not wear hats play in the shade;

• Wearing rash shirts while swimming.

These practices are an integral part of our daily school routine. We strongly encourage our students to use these practices at home as well.

SCHOOL HATS

All children are required to wear hats at school every day. We are requesting that parents ensure hats are packed into bags ready for each school day. We have recently had a number of children not bringing hats to school. All students participate in outdoor lessons every day of the week and it becomes very disruptive when hats need to be borrowed. This is a practice we do not encourage due to the possibility of head lice.

We thank everyone in advance for helping to make our school sun safe.

This week I will be meeting with Kerrie Beilfield, our WHS advisor. We will be reviewing this year’s action plan and putting together a new plan for next year.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Last Friday our school once again commemorated Remembrance Day. We had a wonderful roll up of parents and community members including special guests such as Geoff Gowing, Robert Thornton, Rev Jody Zammitt, Ray and Bev Barry, Jacinta Ledlin and Les Bray. Martindale School students also participated in our ceremony.

Our guest speaker was Corporal Mark Wilkinson from Singleton Army barracks, and the flag party made up of Private Alexander Raymond and Private Elijah Davis. These two young men have been in the army only seven months. Corporal Wilkinson has been overseas and spoke from the heart about his time representing our country.

Mr Gowing, who turned 99 this year, said that he has been to many Remembrance Day ceremonies over the years, but this was the most moving he had every attended, and that we should be congratulated.

So: to the children, the teachers, the representatives from Singleton Army barracks and our c o m m u n i t y , including the representatives

from Martindale School, thank you and congratulations!

A special mention must go to the P and C for their wonderful morning tea which was enjoyed by all after the ceremony.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK - RACHEL BIBBY

Rachel has earned the title of Student of the Week, for being a respectful class member when there are different teachers in the classroom. She knows the school expectations and her behaviour is consistently good. With her learning, Rachel has been challenging herself to write more efficiently and experimenting with a variety of writing styles. Last week’s draft persuasive writing showed an improving understanding of structure and using strong vocabulary to strengthen her reasons. Rachel’s introductory sentence from her writing was ‘Remembrance Day is a very important day to remember the people who fought in World War 1 and I strongly believe that all Australians should commemorate it.’

Rachel has been working hard to ask for assistance when she requires it and was able to better develop her understanding of percentages last week when she asked and listened to advice from the teacher. Rachel feels good when the learning is harder and more challenging.

A comment made from one of the peers said that Rachel was answering more questions in the classroom and being very respectful to everyone.

Congratulations Rachel on your achievements. You should feel very proud of the great role model that you are becoming.

Cassilis students and staff paid their respect to the men and women who have fought and who continue to fight in conflicts around the world. Last Friday, Remembrance Day, we promised never to forget.

DUBBO ZOO RECOUNTS – WRITTEN BY STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN-YEAR 2

One day we packed our bags because we were going to the zoo. With a twist, a flip and a growl we were off! We were so excited; we thought we were going to explode! We loved being in the cosy van which was like a bus. There we had some morning tea. When we arrived we got a buggy and hit the road! We headed for the giraffes. Their tongues were so lumpy, wet and blueish purple. We saw the cheetahs but they were disappointing. I thought the tiger was better. I saw a rhino and I thought it looked fat and golden. The otters were so cute. I learnt their call which was a ‘squeak’. Elka

PEW REFLECTIONS - LUKE 23:33-45

Today’s liturgy brings to and end the yearly liturgical cycle and concludes with the great festival honouring Christ as King. This is quite a recent Feast day, inaugurated in 1925 by Pope Pius X1. This was a time in our world’s history when the first Great War was over, but there were signs in Europe that peace was illusory. The feast was to be a reminder that though world powers may fail, there is a power for peace within the world that will not fail. The reign of Christ has been established, and the values of peace and justice are possible for those who see this reign of God.

While the world seeks power through pomp and display, Jesus displays the power of God’s reign on a Cross. The values of this world, which lead to the horrors of Gallipoli, Hiroshima, Cambodia, Croatia, Syria need to be turned upside down for true peace to break out. Wars begin with greed and selfishness, whether on a world scale or the wars within the family home. Peace begins where there is generosity, forgiveness and concern about others. This is the kin-dom that Jesus came to offer and the power that we celebrate in today’s feast.

The cycle of Luke’s Gospel comes to a fitting end with the image of the crucified Saviour offering life in God’s gracious love to a dying criminal. The heavens are opened for those who desire to live in God

Our club has given financial support to assist attendance of eight students whom Tessa Roe took to a recent leadership training school. We are looking forward to hosting Tessa and some of the students at one of our club meetings, and hearing a report on their weekend.

OLD GLASSES RECYCLING

Merriwa Rotary is collecting glasses (spectacles) which are no longer needed so that they can be graded and forwarded on to countries where they are needed for use by people who cannot afford to buy glasses. Under this scheme they are given free to people who need them. In Australia, the project is organised by Lions.

Merriwa Rotary is involved in this scheme in cooperation with the Muswellbrook Lions Club. So far the response from our Merriwa/Cassilis community has been outstanding, with glasses which would have cost their owners tens of thousands of dollars, having been received and dispatched to the RECYCLE FOR SIGHT program.

Anyone who has glasses which are no longer needed is invited to help by participating.

Glasses can be left at Merriwa Pharmacy. Our Rotary club will then pass them on to Lions for processing.

CHRISTMAS STREET STALLNOVEMBER 18

Merriwa Red Cross will be holding their Christmas Street Stall on November 18 at which a 100 Club, raffle of a handmade Christmas Quilt, a Christmas Bargain table and stall will be operating.

A new directive from Red Cross enabling each branch to direct funds back into the local area for the purpose of assisting those in need means that this year, money raised from this street stall can be directed to helping provide a motorised wheelchair and some school uniforms for two local families.

Once again we would ask for your help and support for this stall and thank you in anticipation for your assistance.

The Hunter River Group of CWA of NSW has two Educational Grants for 2016. It is very easy to apply and we encourage all students who fit the criteria to fill out the application form and return it to your local branch secretary of CWA. Merriwa CWA Branch Secretary is Robyn McAlister.

1. Hunter River Educational Grant to the value of $500.00 tenable by a student entering Tertiary Education, whether TAFE College or University and who resides within the bounds of the Hunter river Group. Mature age students may apply and the Grant will be awarded on a needs basis. Students entering Tertiary Education please supply a letter of recommendation from the Principal or Deputy Principal or your Year Advisor. Mature age students please supply a letter of recommendation that will support your application

2. Jean Latham Educational Grant to the value of $300.00 tenable by a Year 11 student entering Year 12 and residing within the bounds of the Hunter River Group.

Applications close December 11, 2016.

Scone. With a late switch to the synthetic wicket following early morning storms, we were taunted by the weather all day with storms passing all around us but were fortunate to get in a full game.

Sent in to bat in the heat and humidity, it was heads down for the full 40 overs with some great starts by James, Doug and Seth who all fell for an unlucky 13. Charlie and Will combined patience and skill for a fantastic 92 run partnership before Charlie was caught behind on 55. Will was in great form to finish the innings on 70 not out. At the end of the 40 we were 5/206, our best effort in a long time.

Our defense got off to a great start with a sharp caught and bowled by Will and some tight overs by Pat at the other end. By drinks, the Bulls were 4/56 and things were looking bright. Smart and energetic fielding, including a magnificent catch by Bailey just inside the boundary and another by Seth a short time later, kept us in the game and restricted the Bulls scoring opportunities. Our bowlers stayed focused and we finally got them all out for 160 in the 39th over. A great finish to a close game which came just in time as the rain continued to threaten. Like our fielders, all our bowlers contributed well with Pat finishing on 3/30 off 8, Charlie 2/32 (8), James 2/18 (3.2), Will 1/17 (8), Seth 1/27 (5) and Doug 0/31 (6).

Players’ Player - Will Gell and Encouragement Award to Bailey McNaught for his great catch and excellent fielding.

Team captain, Jon Osmond reports: “I was very impressed with the effort of 110% that everyone put in through the whole game, with that sort of effort we will find ourselves winning more games. It was great to see Charlie Stokes back and getting amongst the runs and bowling. Well done everyone”
