High water on the nicola river

the City of Merritt has been advisedby the Ministry of Forests, lands andNatural resources that with the currentweather trend, we can expect the Nicolariver level to creep up, possibly resultingin increased seepage to low lying areas.

at this time, the Ministry predicts thatflows will remain within the channelbanks of the Nicola river, and so City of-ficials don’t anticipate any over-bankflooding within the City.

residents living adjacent to the Nicolariver may experience further infiltrationinto pipes and basements as a result ofgroundwater seepage and/or basementdrain backups. Depending on theweather, changes to water flows couldresult in some localized flooding whichwould required pro-active flood protec-tion along the river within the City.

Emergency Program Coordinator SkyMckeown urges residents living alongthe Nicola river, or traveling through thearea, to be alert for potentially damagingflows or obstructions which should be re-ported to City Hall, (250)378-4224.

He also asks everyone to keep a re-spectful distance from river banks andkeep your children and animals safe.and for residents to remain alert to fur-ther potential flooding levels as the cur-rent weather trend continues.

With the warmer weather, the roadsare swept and refreshing the lines begins.line painting on the Coquihalla is sched-uled to be completed by May 15th. thisyear, the Ministry of transportation andline marking contractors will be testing athicker application of the paint on sec-tions of the highway to see if it improvesthe line durability.

Winter maintenance, ie. snow plow-ing and sanding, cause significant ero-sion to lane markings. and with snowfallsometimes continuing into early May, theadditional maintenance work means anadditional impact on the lines.

Federal environmental regulationshave required a move away from the re-silient acrylic paints used in the past, topaints with lower Volatile organic Com-pounds (VoCs) that are easier on the en-vironment. the Ministry says theycontinue to test new types of paint andpavement marking technologies to tryand identify options that are both long-lasting and environmentally-safe.
