Merriott First School pupils took part in a local football festival in Ilminster. Merriott entered two teams along with lots of other local school teams. The festival was organised by Bob Brunt and took place at the recreation ground. Mrs Rickard and Mrs Copping supervised the team at the tournament. The children won lots of their matches against other schools and plenty of goals were scored!

The teams included a Year 3 pupil from Haselbury School which Merriott School collaborates with. The two schools will work even closer together after both governing bodies have voted to Federate. A new joint governing board between Merriott and Haselbury will begin at the end of June. Mr Smith, headteacher, said “We are so proud of our children. They enjoy competing and also know how to play fairly too. We always like to play in this festival and look forward to it each year. It was especially nice to see our Merriott pupils make Elliott so wel-come from Haselbury. We hope to have more joint teams in the future.”

This term the children are having lots of opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity after school. This includes street dance, rounders, football, athletics and cricket after half-term. Phillip Smith - Executive Headteacher

On Wed 5th July Bishop Ruth will be coming to Merriott to lead a Confirmation Service for all those being confirmed in our Deanery. At Confirmation people renew the beliefs and

promises stated at their Baptism. It is always a very joyful service and is open to anyone who would like to attend. If you are interested in being confirmed yourself, please speak to Julia or Bob.

Thanks to those who attended our Annual Church Meeting. Unfortunately we were unable to appoint a new Church Treasurer and John Booth has kindly agreed to carry on until we can find one. We would really appreciate hearing from anyone who could consider being Treasurer for our church.

Finally, I am very pleased to tell you that we have a Curate coming to us very soon! Nick Clarke is being ordained at Wells Cathedral on 2nd July and will then be a part of our ministry team. Like us, Nick will be working in all 4 churches and villages. Unlike us, he will continue to live in Crewkerne and to earn his living elsewhere for part of the week. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Nick and his family.

The new season is now well underway and will continue until mid September with over 50 fixtures against teams from Somerset, Dorset & Devon. The club competes in the Wessex mixed league, in addition to friendly matches and the local cup competitions.

We also hold weekly club sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings, when coaching sessions are available.

During the close season, there have been improvements to the club facilities including a new kitchen, equipment store and ongoing upgrades to the bowling green.

We are always looking for new members of all ages, so whether you are a complete beginner who wants to learn bowls in a friendly atmosphere, or a seasoned accomplished bowler, you will be made very welcome.

We also have an active social programme and recently held a charity evening with all proceeds donated to Crewkerne Hospital.

Please also feel free to browse our website www.merriottbowls.btck.co.uk where more information is available, together with the club’s history and photographs.

Anyone wishing to learn more about us may contact Ian Kendall on 01460-73029 or [email protected].

N e w S p o n s o r Somerset Reiki : accredited Reiki clinic in Chiselborough

What is Reiki? Reiki is a traditional complementary therapy. The client lies fully clothed on a treatment couch while the practitioner's hands are placed in Reiki positions on the body. What can it do for me? Typically, during and for some time after Reiki, the sympa-thetic nervous system down-regulates and the client experiences physical changes associated with deep relaxation, such as slower heart rate, easier breathing, gentle relaxation of muscles. This deep relaxation profoundly strengthens the body's ability to self-heal.

Yet Reiki's effects are not only physical. Over time, Reiki quietly, yet deeply addresses the client's entire wellbeing, including mind and emotions. Many report a calmer mind, refreshed mental clarity, improved sleep, and some even feel support and comfort during grief. Reiki treatments are by Sara Morley, Reiki Master Practitioner, accredited by The UK Reiki Federation. Visit www.somersetreiki.com or contact Sara on [email protected] / 07484 636577

B i r t h d a y c e l e b ra t i o n s a t C h a t t e r - C i n o Arriving half an hour early for an Editorial Meeting, I popped into Chatter-Cino for a coffee and was greeted by the sound of music and birthday celebrations. Celia Simon was celebrating her 70th with friends and family, with Henry serenading her with his own

rendition of a Simon & Garfunkel classic, “Cecilia—you’re breaking my heart!”

The atmosphere in this delightful little café was just lovely (as was my cappuccino!) If you have not visited it yet, I would certainly recommend you do.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who donated leftover wool following last month's article in the Messenger, especially those who left bags full on my door-step and whom I couldn't thank personally. The photo shows just some of the items we have made for charity, including blankets to be sent abroad, premature baby hats for Yeovil children’s baby unit, t-shirts for babies in Africa, jumpers, dolls clothes and toys for children in the women's refuge. Any more wool (complete or part balls) gratefully

received at 7 Speke Close, Merriott.

Thank you.

M e r r i o t t A l l o t m e n t O p e n D ay All our visitors seemed to enjoy their experience and many expressed their amazement at the diversity of the allot-ments, where many of the tenants experiment with different types and varieties of crops. Many plots are purely organic and this is one of the main reasons for keeping an allotment; you know where your food has come from and how it has been grown. There are always plenty of flowers being grown on site. There was also envy expressed by some visiting plot holders regarding the quality of the soil we enjoy at our Merriott site!

A highlight of the day was Gordon’s

Scottish ‘flat’ sausages which proved to be very tasty and extremely popular. People who enquired where they could purchase them were disappointed to learn they had been sent from Scotland especially for the event.

Our thanks go to our sponsors: The Kings Head, Andrew Osborne and Nigel Witcombe for their generosity and support and also to the tenants who contributed raffle prizes.

Merriott Allotment Association has a few plots available. If you are interested please contact the Secretary, Beryl Bellamy 01460 74574.

THE MERRIOTT HERITAGE TRUST WHAT CAN IT DO FOR MERRIOTT ?

If you are interested in the history of Merriott, in conserving its old buildings, preserving its wildlife sites and even maintaining its footpath network, we may be able to offer financial help with the cost, for example, of restoring stone-work, iron railings, gates and date stones, planting trees and maintaining signposts and stiles. We are keen to rescue documents, such as house deeds, and photographs to prevent their loss and are already building up a collection. All this has been made possible by the generous legacy from the late Cathy Herriman.

Please contact us if you think we can help you or if you can help us.

Merriott Scorpions Football Club, a team for under 14 year olds, is looking for sponsors.

The major expense for the team is their kit and a new fundraising initiative is asking local businesses to buy a raffle ticket at £20 each. A maximum of 40 tickets are up for sale and the independent draw will be made during the last weekend of June.

The company which buys the winning ticket will have its logo on the front of the shirts and the company which buys the second drawn ticket will have its logo on the back. The kit will be printed and ready to be worn for the 2017/18 season which starts in August. In addition, logos will be listed as key sponsors on Facebook (Merriott Scorpions Youth Football Team).

For information on upcoming events, Special offers & menus please see our website.

Deciding to open your garden to the public can cause a range of different emotions. To start with, there’s the insecurity. Will people like it? Will it be ‘good enough’, big enough, interesting enough? Will I have enough time to get it ready for the set date? What will be in flower then? Will the visitors mind if there are a few weeds, “yes, we keep those nettles for the butterflies!” and will people come?

Then what about the logistics of finding helpers to be on the gate, to make and serve teas and sell the plants.

All these worries before the event soon evaporate on Garden Open Day when the gate opens and they are replaced by the huge pleasure of seeing visitors in your garden enjoying themselves. The plant lovers are finding a special plant they either hadn’t met before, or had forgotten the name of, and the sound of chatter and clinking teacups. Generally garden-ers and garden visitors are a generous group of people who are full of enthusiasm and compliments for another gardener’s toil.

Lower Severalls Farmhouse is open on Sunday 25th June from 11am till 5pm. We are busy preparing now for this opening. It’s tulip flowering time now but what will be out at the end of June? We have around 6 weeks to go as I write this. The

perennials are all ready to spring up and they will be in full flush soon as May slips into June and the frosts are gone. I am looking forward to seeing the Delphiniums that I bought last Autumn from Blackmore and Langdon and all the Roses, Salvi-

as, hardy Geraniums and the Pictorial Meadow Mix we sowed in the gravel beds of the old Nursery.

This year we are opening for the Hardy Plant Society and the Purple Community Fund. The HPS is a friendly society whose members all share their passion for hardy herbaceous perennials. The local Somerset group organise the annual Spring Plant Fair at East Lambrook Manor in March, which is

always very popular. This year the HPS has published a colour-ful booklet listing all the gardens open in England and Wales in aid of the HPS to celebrate 60 years since it was founded. We have a good supply of them, so please do pop in to CB Plants at Lower Severalls Nursery and pick up a copy.

Entrance to Lower Severalls on 25th June is £2.50 and the pro-ceeds are split between the Hardy Plant Society and the Purple Community Fund, which supports, educates and rehabilitates socially disadvantaged people. So please do come along, have a cup of tea, piece of cake or a cream tea and enjoy the garden. Mary Pring and Catherine Bond, CB Plants

Merriott Marquetry Group

Many people have never heard of Marquetry, never mind spell it (!), which is actually one of the oldest crafts, having been around since the 1300's. It is the art of producing pictures and designs using the colours, type of wood and direction of the grain of very thin veneers of wood. It is a nice gentle and inexpen-sive hobby with rewarding results and exhibits of this can be seen at our stall at the Spring and Autumn Yandles Shows at Martock.

Alternatively, we meet in the Blake Room in the Village Hall every Monday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm where we would be pleased to see you and explain the mechanics of how to do it. In other words, we could put you in the picture, so to speak. Do come and see us, you would be very welcome.
