17 April Prize Bingo 6.30pm for 7.30pm startProceeds to St Luke’s Church

ST LUKE’S CHURCHAt the start of April we are over half way through the season of Lent. It was good to welcome staff and students from William Lovell Academy to our Ash Wednesday service, following which they served a soup and roll lunch which was gratefully received. For some of the students it was an opportunity to consider how to keep a holy Lent. For others it was a new experience, and the lunch afterwards gave time for discussion about what actually happens in the Church throughout the year. To clear up a common misconception – the Church is not where the Vicar lives!

During March we also held our Annual Parochial Church Meeting, when elections for Parish officers for the coming year took place. Angela Brady has stood down from the role of Churchwarden, and Sandra Boone was elected in her place. Thanks were expressed to Angela for the many years she has held that particular role.

Our annual round of fund raising has begun again, with a Bingo evening on 11 March which raised £359.50. Thank you to everyone who attended, and also those who helped make and serve refreshments or gave prizes. I know a lot of people believe the Church is extremely wealthy – but it is simply not true. The Church certainly owns a lot of land, on which the Church buildings are placed, but land does not pay the insurance or the electricity bills. The running costs are in the hands of each individual community. Our accounts are displayed in the Church throughout the year, so pop in and have a look – you will see for yourself how much needs to be raised simply to exist. We will always be grateful for any contribution, however small.

There will be another Prize Bingo evening on Monday 17 April (Easter Monday) at Stickney Youth Centre. The doors will open at 6.30pm and the games will commence at 7.30pm.

There are only a couple more weeks of Lent before we turn our thoughts to our Easter Celebrations. On Maundy Thursday we will celebrate a ‘Night of Mixed Emotions’ as we trace the footsteps of Jesus through the Last Supper and out to his arrest and trial. Our celebration will begin at 7.00pm. Why not come and join us, and see what all the fuss is about?

On Good Friday we will have an hour’s reflection ‘At the Foot of the Cross’ from 10.00am, and there will be plenty of time to get from there to Spilsby for a Walk of

Page 5: Meringue nest cheesecake with mini eggsparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../128/Stickney_Parish_Mag…  · Web viewenter as many classes as you wish on his form, but a separate form

Witness at 11.45am. Our Easter Celebrations come to a climax at 11.15am on 16 April, Easter Sunday, when we welcome into Church the new Paschal Candle (come and find out what that means!) with a live band, The New Name, and a baptism to celebrate too. It looks like being a right good party!

Looking forward, there are a couple of events to highlight:-Saturday 6 May – The Christian Aid Appeal during which we build our copper path and silver cross in the Church. Save up all your coppers and silver coins and bring them along to add to the funds already collected. There will be the usual refreshments available, together with a raffle and tombola. Of particular interest, of course, will be all those old £1 coins which are due to be replaced. We will happily take them off your hands and use them to support work among the refugees fleeing war zones.

Saturday 13 May – Our Annual Auction in the Village Hall. Items for auction can be brought to the hall from 10.00am. Refreshments will be served from 12.30pm with the auction starting at 2.00pm. PLEASE NOTE we cannot accept electrical items for sale as they cannot be PAT tested. If you can help in the kitchen, or with the auction itself, please contact Angela Brady on 01205 480661. Angela will also be able to answer any queries you might have.

Gardening Tips for AprilApril is somewhat of an in-between month, and as usual, what we do in the garden depends very much on the weather.  If it turns out to be warm then we can get ahead by starting off tender crops; if it's still too cold, then catching up with March jobs will have to do.Here then are a few ideas of what we might be doing in April.1]  If the soil was too cold in March, plant onion sets now.  Heat-treated sets are best planted this month too.  Shallots and onions started from seed last month can be left to thicken up for planting out later.2]  Main crop potatoes are traditionally planted around Easter.  As this varies from year to year by quite a few weeks, it's best to pick a time around mid-April as a safe bet.  Plant in rows 75cm apart, with individual tubers 40cm apart for the maximum yield.  Don't forget to earth up earlies as the first shoots reach 15cm.3]  With tender crops, you can wait and sow all of them outside when the soil is warmer.  Alternatively, you can get a head-start and sow in pots in the greenhouse.  Transplant them when all danger of frost is gone, around early May in our area.4]  If you planted calabrese or cauliflowers it is worth while covering them now with a fleece or fine mesh to keep the main pests out, particularly the flea beetle which can damage the young plants.5]  Look out for slugs and snails - they will attack emerging seedlings and transplants.  Mice love newly sown peas and beans and work along rows.  They are not adverse to eating the seed stored in sheds - so be on guard. In conclusion, a word from Lady Irwin Ingram, an English poet who obviously knew a thing or two about gardening:-

'No seed is sown, but weeds spontaneous rise'

Happy gardening ..oh and weeding!

St George’s Day Word Search

Maundy Thursday – 13 AprilMaundy Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday) is the Christian holy day falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Maundy and Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles.  Maundy Thursday celebrations in the United Kingdom involve the Queen offering "alms" to deserving senior citizens, one man and one woman for each year her age. The coins, known asMaundy money, are distributed in red and white purses, and isa custom dating back to King Edward I. A red purse contains regular currency and is given in place of food and clothing; a white purse has money in the amount of one penny for each year of the Queen’s age. Since 1822, rather than ordinary money, the Sovereign gives out Maundy coins, which are specially minted 1, 2, 3 and 4 penny pieces, and are legal tender.

A message from Lincolnshire Fire & RescueImproving your safety is just a phone call or click away.Following a recent tragic incident in your community, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue would like to offer support and advice at this difficult time. The safety and wellbeing of all of Lincolnshire’s residents is the Fire Service’s primary concern and no more so when an incident such as this occurs.Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue offers a free Home Safety Check service to the people of Lincolnshire, which is an excellent way of improving the safety in your home and it will be a home visit or a self-assessment depending on your circumstances. During a home visit, you will be offered fire safety advice and guidance to give you peace of mind in your own home and, if relevant, will improve your fire safety with the installation of free smoke detectors or other specialist equipment. Alternatively, you could be offered a self-assessment form, which is a comprehensive list, room by room, of fire risks in the home and how to reduce those risks. There are a wide range of different things that could potentially mean you’re at a greater risk of having a fire. If any of the following applies to you or anyone living in your home, please get in touch.

Mental impairment Physical impairment or restricted mobility Sensory impairment Medical oxygen user Alcohol/drug dependency Medication affecting reactions Had a fire, or threat of fire Been involved in fire-setting Smoke, including e-cigarettes Blocked or restricted escape routes

If you have any concerns about friends or family, please discuss this with them and contact us on their behalf if they are happy for you to do so.Even if none of these apply to you, it is still wise to consider the fire safety in your home for you and your family. To aid with this, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue recommends that you contact them to ask for a self-assessment form. This will provide a checklist for each area of your home and highlight any potential fire risks.
