Around Town Carousels AboundAround Town Carousels Abound is an out-

door public arts project. The brightly painted, life-sized carousel horse sculptures are placed throughout the city and county. Over 100 horses are displayed outside of government buildings, businesses, private homes and the Mississippi Welcome Center at Toomsuba. Each horse is uniquely designed and painted by a commis-sioned artist. The carousel icon represents the historical Dentzel Carousel located in Meridian.

The Causeyville General Store was opened

in 1895 as a general store and gristmill. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has many original fixtures and working gristmill. Depot Historic DistrictThe City of Meridian, born of and expe-

riencing its greatest growth in conjunction with railroads, has capitalized on its rail-roading heritage in the development of the Union Station Multi-Modal Transportation Center (MMTC).

The site selected for the MMTC project, the Depot Historic District, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and oc-cupies four city blocks. Union Station in-cludes several modes of passenger transpor-tation including the Meridian Transit

System, Amtrak, Norfolk Southern Rail Corridor, Greyhound and other providers of transit services. The Meridian Railroad Museum is housed in the over 100 year old restored Railway Express Agency building. This unique museum details the history of Meridian’s railroads and features photogra-phy, artifacts, and a model railroad.

as a power source for a gristmill and to manufacture Stetson hats. Historic Carroll Richardson Gristmill is open for tours. The park is a natural wildlife refuge with a picnic area, barbecue grills, gristmill pond, hiking and swimming areas. Primitive camping is available. E.F. Young, Jr. Manufacturing425 26th Ave., 601.693.1961

Established in 1933, E.F. Young, Jr. manufactures ethnic hair care products and cosmetics that are distributed internationally. This company is the oldest African-American manufacturing company in the United States. In 1931, E.F. Young, Jr., started his career as a barber and noticed the need for a line of maintenance products for black hair, thus leading to his career in manufacturing. Tours of the manufacturing facility are available by appointment.

Directions: Take Exit 153 off I-20/59, turn on 22nd Ave toward downtown. Turn left on 4th St. to 26th Ave. Turn right on 26th Ave. E.F. Young will be on the left.

Elsie McWilliams Country Music Trail MarkerElsie McWilliams, not only a Meridianite,

but Jimmie Rodgers’ sister-in-law, wrote many of Jimmie’s songs. She not only holds a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame but was the first woman to be honored on the Mississippi Country Music Trail.

Directions: Take the 22nd Ave. Exit from I-20/59. Go to 5th St. and take a right. Go 2 blocks. Marker is on the left/South lawn of the Lauderdale County Courthouse.

Highland Park Dentzel Carousel1802 Carousel Dr., 601.485.1802 In operation since 1909, this National

Historic Landmark is one of few two-row stationary Dentzel menagerie carousels. This national treasure was manufactured around 1895 by Gustav Dentzel of Philadelphia, Pa. with original oil paintings of museum quality adorning the top crown of the carousel. All the animals are meticulously hand-carved of bass and poplar wood and have been professionally restored to their original beauty. Both the Carousel and Carousel House are National Historic Landmarks.Hours of Operation -Aug. - Oct. Saturday/Sunday 1-5 p.m. Nov. - Mar. Saturday only - 1-5 p.m.Apr. - May Saturday/Sunday- 1-5 p.m.Jun. and July Daily 1-5pm.

Jimmie Rodgers Blues & Country Music Trail Markers & Museum1725 Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Dr., 601.485.1808

Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers, Father of County Music, is honored in Meridian with both a Blues and Country Music Trail Markers and museum. The Blues Trail marker is located in Singing Brakeman Park and credits Rodgers as the first major star to introduce the blues as a foundation of country music to a far wider audience. The Country Music Trail marker is located at his gravesite. The museum located in Highland Park displays memorabilia of his life and career including the original guitar of “the Singing Brakeman” (reported to be the most valuable guitar in the country). The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with holiday closings and closed the last 2 weeks of December and the month of January. With advance notice, private tours may be arranged. The museum has an answering machine and all calls will be returned. Museum admission, $8 adults, $5 seniors and groups of 10 or more, $3 children 8-18, Military discounts.

Directions: Blues Trail Marker-Downtown Meridian/Front St.-Singing Brakeman Park. Take 22nd Ave. Exit from I-20/59 toward downtown. Turn right on Front St. (light at foot of bridge), go 2 blocks, marker is on right.

Country Music Trail Marker-Oak Grove Cemetery - Exit 154A from I-20/59. Go south on Hwy 19. Turn left at the light right before McDonald’s. Take immediate right onto Azalea Dr., continue until road forks, veer left onto Oak Grove Rd. The cemetery is just past the church on the right.

Key Brothers Aviation Exhibit2811 U.S. Hwy. 11 S., 601.482.0364

Pictorial exhibit commemorates Meridian’s Key Brothers, who set a world endurance flight record in 1935. The exhibit contains a review of the history of aviation. Open year-round at the Meridian Regional Airport. Admission is free.

Lazy Acres Pumpkin Patch is open on weekends during October. Group tours are available by appointment during the week. Plantation opens Thanksgiving Day at 1:00 p.m. annually. Take a sleigh ride to the field and choose the perfect REAL Christmas tree. as headquarters for Confederate General Leonidas Polk and was spared by Union General William T. Sherman. The Frank W. Williams home--a major project of the Meridian Restorations Foundation and located adjacent to Merrehope is an excellent example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture, with stained glass, oak paneling, parquet floors and detailed gingerbread scrollwork. Many original features and antique furnishings are in the home. Open year round - Monday thru Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes a tour of both homes. G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Memorial Site Buried in Meridian’s Magnolia Cemetery

“Sonny” Montgomery served in the Mississippi State Senate 1956-1966 and the U.S. House of Representatives 1967-1997. A retired Major General in the Mississippi National Guard, Montgomery championed military and veterans issues including the 1984 Montgomery G.I. Bill.

Directions: From I 20/59, take Exit 153, 22nd Ave, travel through downtown to 14th St., turn left on 14th, then right on 23rd Ave N. Go approximately 1 mile, cemetery is on the right.

Sam Dale Monument and Grave Site The story of the pioneer soldier, General

Sam Dale, who rode from Georgia to the Battle of New Orleans with a message for Andrew Jackson will be forever remembered at the Sam Dale Monument, grave site and historic marker.

Directions: From I-20/I-59 take Exit 154B to Hwy. 39 N. in Daleville.

James E. Chaney Memorial Site Visit the gravesite of slain Civil Rights

worker, James Chaney, who volunteered along with Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman to aid in the registration of African-American voters as part of the Freedom Summer Movement of 1964. Gravesite located in Okatibbee Baptist Church Cemetery.

Directions: Exit 152 from I-20/59. Proceed right at top of the exit. Follow road until it dead ends into Valley Rd. Turn left on Valley Rd. traveling approximately 2.7 miles to Fish Lodge Rd., Okatibbee Baptist Church sign. Continue 3/10’s of a mile, cemetery will be on the right with gravesite near the road.

This cemetery is the resting place for more than 1,200 Confederate soldiers.

Directions: From I-20/I-59, take exit for Hwy. 45 N. Look for signs of the cemetery once at Lauderdale.

McLemore Cemetery McLemore Cemetery is Meridian’s oldest cemetery and graveside of the city’s founder, Richard McLemore. The McLemore Cemetery is listed on the National Register of

Historic Places.Directions: McLemore Cemetery is located on 16th Ave. and 6th St.

Oak Grove Cemetery Jimmie Rodgers Gravesite

The grave of Jimmie Rodgers is in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Oddfellows Cemetery Established in the 1860’s by the Oddfellows

Fraternal Organization, this cemetery is one of the oldest and most historic African American cemeteries in the area.

This historic cemetery contains the monuments of Meridian founders John Ball and Lewis Ragsdale, the graves of Emil and Kelly Mitchell, the King and Queen of the Gypsies, a mound that contains the remains of the confederate dead and the grave of Lt. Charles W. Read who is regarded as the John Paul Jones of the Confederacy. Rose Hill Cemetery is open daily. Guided tours are available and may be arranged through the Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau. Annual tours with costumed interpreters are listed on the tourism website. Admission is free.

Temple Beth Israel CemeteryThis 19th century resting place for

Meridian’s Jewish community, dates back to the 1860’s. Many of the monuments and markers are fine examples of Victorian funerary art.Directions: From I-20/I-59, take exit 154B to Hwy. 39 N. Turn left onto 19th St.

The Lauderdale County Agri-Center, located just two miles off I-20/59 is one of the finest equestrian facilities in the region. The arena is 125 x 250 feet and can seat approximately 1500. The stall barn and arena are conveniently located under the same roof for easy access. There are 200 10x10 stalls available for rent. A large 200 x 300 foot warm up area is adjoining the arena. Both automobile and trailer parking are plentiful. The Agri-Center is adjacent to Bonita Lakes Equestrian trails. Although specifically designed as an equestrian facility, it is a truly versatile building. The Lauderdale County Agri-Center is limited only by your imagination. Take Exit 154/Butler.

Lake OkatibbeeThis 3,800-acre lake offers boating,

fishing, swimming, water skiing, picnic areas, hunting and hiking. Lake and campgrounds are open year-round. The

Water Park is open Memorial Day - Labor Day. Full service
