Select Books Africana Catalogue 57: March 2012

One of the most important publications to challenge apartheid. Published during the height of opposition to apartheid and two years before the second State of Emergency. Hans Heese drew on the substantial body of genealogical literature that had grown up around the well kept archives of the N.G. Church (of which his father, J.A. Heese, was archivist). Heese did not reveal anything new, but what he did was to set out plainly (names and dates) when intermarriages had taken place between black and white at the Cape. The reaction to his book was emotional in some quarters and legal threats and worse were aimed at him. Of particular note was that one of the ancestors of Ds. Andries Treurnicht (leader of the Conservative Party which opposed any liberalisation of government policies) was named in the book as having married "Victoria van die Kaap". Jan Hoon, Conservative MP for Kuruman and one of the most implacable opponents of liberalism in South Africa, publically announced his intention to sue Heese. Heese invited Hoon to meet him in the Cape Archives and look at the records with him. The case never came to court! This book shook the foundation of one of the basic tenets upon which apartheid was founded. This slim paperback is scarce in this condition. One of the most important publications in South Africa since 1948.

Based on Hey's carefully kept fishing diaries, recording happy days on rivers, lakes and estuaries in different parts of South Africa over a period of fifty years. As the author of several government Blue Books on inland fisheries, Hey had the unique opportunity of visiting all the worthwhile waters. He grew up in the Border region and started work at the Department of Post and Telegraphs as a teenager. He worked in the Department for the next 47 years, enjoying postings all over South Africa (always close to good fishing spots!). In 1925, the Union Government initiated a survey of all inland waters and Hey was appointed to fulfil the task, despite his lack of formal scientific training. He described every river, stream and vlei in South Africa and as a result the government was able to stock rivers and dams with fish in a more efficient manner. "If you only ever collect one [fishing] book, let it be RAPTURE OF THE RIVER. There will never be another that sums up the soul of South African fly fishing as brilliantly". Paul Curtis, FISHING THE MARGINS, p. 113.

R 1200

Smith (1919-2007) was a crucial figure in Central Africa post WWII and his role in leading Rhodesia into UDI is well known. This book allows one to understand his beliefs, and the influence of his upbringing on his later life. Hector Macdonald was the Chief Justice of Rhodesia and the letter (dated 1 July 1998) defends Macdonald against Smith's allegations that he was a "traitor" due to his position during negotiations. The Order of Service reflects a simple family funeral without pomp and ceremony.

Percival's account is one of only a few about the capture of the Cape by the British in 1795 and this period. The Cape Archives holds a Memorial from Ritter to the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope dated 10 December 1878 (CO, vol. 4201, no. that he worked as a bookkeeper in Lamberts Bay from 1852 until 1854; and the district of Calvinia from 1868 until 1874; and then from 1874 until the penning of the letter, in Cape Town itself. There is a note attached to the Memorial agreeing to provide employment. At that stage Ritter was living at 104 Loop St. Cape Town. In the Juta's Directory for 1899 onwards he is shown as living at 2 Upper Union Street, off Kloof Street. Ritter's widow Catherine died aged 84 in 1916 (MOOC 6/9/828, no. 1771) and her Death Notice indicates that William died in 1906, but his Death Notice could not be traced. Ritter would have been very aware of the Muslim population living in Cape Town at the time, as there were a number of Mosques in the Bo-Kaap (near Loop Street) as well as in Loop and Long Streets. The clothing of the men is typical of the time: "In place of shoes, some people of Eastern origin wore kaparrings, a type of wooden sandal… a wooden sole, raised from the ground, in front and at the heel, and attached to the foot only by an iron pin having a turned wooden head, and passing between the great toe and the fore toe… Mahomedans were distinguished among the coloured population by wearing red handkerchiefs round their heads, and pyramidical hats with spreading borders: their priests wore turbans, and garments of various colours." (p.5-7). The missionary Backhouse, quoted in DE MEILLON'S PEOPLE OF COLOUR; Robert C.-H. Shell.

R 1000The famous Cape Triangluar stamp was designed by Charles Davidson Bell in 1848 and in 1854 the English firm of Perkins, Bacon & Co. began engraving and printing them. Later copies were done by C.J. Roberts of Spin Street, Cape Town ("Woodblock" series) and as before did not contain perforations and thus had to be cut from a sheet before use! The colour facsimiles show all their variations, shades and colours, print-runs, defining features and other miscellanea of importance to stamp collectors! A scarce book about a uniquely Cape item.

GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON

The photographs are by George Washington Wilson (1823-1893). Wilson enjoyed limited success as a portraitist in northern Scotland until he came to the notice of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Many of the early photographs of Queen Victoria in Scottish settings were taken by Wilson. He became well known, and using his increased income, moved

into landscape photography and established one of the largest photographic print companies in the world, which his children continued to run after his death. He took special

interest in Australia and South Africa and his original photographs are held at the University of Aberdeen. Numbered prints produced by his own studio are seldom seen.

The Pretoria photographs are by an unknown photographer.

102 ADDERLEY STREET CAPETOWN [sic]. 15,5 x 21 cm (photograph); 24,5 x 36 cm (including mounting board). [ca 1899]. R 500

A superb view encapsulating the charm of Cape Town at this time. The photograph is taken "down" Adderley Street, towards the sea. It is dominated by magnificent late Victorian buildings, especially Heynes Matthew & Co and Cartwrights. Also in view are are the Standard Bank building with its portico and cupola roof (still extant, but now four storeys, not two). The Post Office building boasts beautiful but unnecessary domes and corner turrets. The station, and in the distance, Customs House, can also be seen. The buildings are embellished with balconies and ironmongery. A forest of masts can be seen in the distant bay. The street is busy, with numerous wagons, Cape carts, trams and pedestrians visible. Travellers of the era remarked upon the wide street and Table Mountain towering above. Regretfully, most of the buildings have long gone and the city has been cut off from the sea by increased harbour development and the infamous elevated freeways. A marvellous depiction of the glory of a late Victorian city embedded in the British Empire!

103 CAPE TOWN AND TABLE MOUNTAIN FROM TABLE BAY. 23,5 x 28,5 cm unmounted photograph. [ca 1899]. R 300

This view of Table Mountain and the city from the bay shows the harbour warehouses and the city from Kloof Nek to the edge of Devil's Peak. The limits of the city's urban sprawl at the time are evident. A lone recreational sailing boat can be seen. The bay is very still and this must have been a dramatic photograph for the time, as exposure times were long and the image is very clear.

105 GRAND HOTEL & STRAND STREET CAPE TOWN. 15,5 x 20 cm (photograph); 24,5 x 36 cm (including mounting board). [ca. 1895]. R 450

The view is towards Green Point with the Grand Hotel on the left. Designed by Charles Freeman, the Grand Hotel was the most luxurious in Cape Town at the time. Beyond the glass swing doors, the arms of the Cape Colony were emblazoned in mosiac on the entrance hall floor. There was an electric lift; and the large dining room was furnished in walnut and upholstered in red plush. A tram can be seen approaching, one assumes slowly, as men in bowler hats and others in labourers' clothes stand nonchalantly in the centre of the St George's Street and Strand Street intersection! The sidewalks are thronged with people and there are no other vehicles apart from a single Cape cart.

106 LION'S HEAD AND THREE ANCHOR BAY. 23,5 x 28,5 cm (photograph); 23.5 x 28,5 cm (including mounting board). Small tear to top left corner of photograph. [1895]. R 300

This view of Lion's Head and Three Anchor Bay shows a pristine mountainside and a virtually undeveloped coastline. Two miscellaneous photographs are laid down on the verso of the mount.

107 MAIN ROAD, CLAREMONT. 15,5 x 20 cm (photograph); 24,5 x 36 cm (including mounting board). [1900]. R 400

The view is southwards towards the Arderne Gardens and shows the Ellerbreck & Co. photographers' building. Of interest are the figures riding bicycles, on carts, walking and the complete absence of cars. A tram can be seen in the background. A number of men stand near a wagon in the foreground. The semi-rural nature of Claremont is evident and trees dominate the landscape around St Saviour's Church. Only one of the Victorian buildings in this view is extant today, and that but a façade.

108 PARLIAMENT HOUSE, CAPE TOWN FROM N.E. 23,5 x 28,5 cm unmounted photograph. [1895]. R 350

The Parliamentary buildings are shown, with Lion's Head in the background and Parliament Street in the foreground. The buildings were completed in 1884, having been designed by Charles Freeman, but after a dispute, completed by H.S. Greaves. A bright and clean statue of Queen Victoria (in celebration of her Golden Jubilee in 1890) can be seen in the front of the entrance. The site is barren of vegetation and the trees in the Company's Garden are very small. Hence the magnificent building can be seen in its full glory, unobscured by the large trees which surround it today.

The Railway Station (completed in 1878) dominates the photograph, with a view of Customs House and the sea in the background. The booking hall canopy can be clearly seen. An additional level was later added to each corner (completed in 1899). The roads in the area are almost empty apart from two horse taxi cabs and a small hand cart. The hoarding aound the Post Office construction site is visible and bears an advertisement for R. Scott "Bookbinder and stationers of Long Street".

110 SATURDAY MARKET, PARADE, CAPE TOWN. 23,5 x 28,5 cm unmounted photograph. [ca 1899]. R 350

A view of the the Parade, looking towards Devil's Peak with the row of pine trees that used to line Darling Street in the background, as well as the Power Station. There is no sign of the City Hall (completed 1905) and the Parade looks uneven and ill-kempt, an indication that by this time it was a commercial node for the growing city. Residents cluster around tables and wagons on the Parade, perusing the objects laid out thereon. The buyers present an interesting cross-section. Well dressed younger men in boaters and caps mingle with older men wearing bowlers and top hats. By far the majority present appear to be white males, but women are present, as are well dressed black men. Older customers of Select Books often reminisce about buying books on the Parade on Saturday mornings, and the gems they turned down! Perhaps those gathered around a table are viewing a collection of old travel accounts!

111 STANDARD BANK OF SOUTH AFRICA. 23,5 x 28,5 cm, unmounted photograph. [ca 1890]. R 350

Also designed by Charles Freeman, and considered to be one of his best works, the Standard Bank building is in Adderley Street, Cape Town. A further two storeys were added later, creating the present day façade and the wrought iron fence remains to this day.The columned portico rose two storeys and contained carvings in the pediment. The banking hall was the most impressive in Cape Town. The original Cartwright's Building is in the background, and to the left there is hoarding to prevent pedestrians walking past the construction site of the new, larger, Post Office building (which was completed in 1896). The hoardings were erected by the contractors, Small and Morgan, and bear advertisements for Juta & Co.; Kuhn and Herald (watch and clock sellers of 39 Long Street); and Koch and Dixie (ironmongers).

112 TABLE BAY, CAPE TOWN. 23,5 x 28,5 cm unmounted photograph. [ca 1895]. R 300

This scene of Table Bay shows a row of skiffs or rowing boats at anchor and larger sailing boats further out in the bay. Some "hulks" are also visible.

113 WALE STREET AND ST GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL, CAPE TOWN. 15,5 x 20 cm (photograph); 24,5 x 36 cm (including mounting board). [ca 1895]. R 400

A view looking "down" Wale Street towards the Slave Lodge with the first St George's Cathedral built in 1834 (and replaced by the present in 1901). The Cape Town Police Station can be seen on the corner of Wale and Queen Victoria Streets, and in the foreground is a single decker tram [advertising

The view is of Church Square, Pretoria and Church Street, looking west. On the left is the photographer Robertson and H.F. Gros's premises. "F. Rudolph & Co. Goedkoop kontantwinkel" is on the ground floor of the building. On the other corner is the establishment of T.W. Beckett & Co. Three inspanned wagons can be seen in the foreground, with the traditional longhorned "trekosse" waiting patiently and a man clad in a loincloth and others better dressed tending the wagons.

115 Pretoria [photographs]. FOUR VIEWS: laid down on a leaf extracted from a photograph album. 23,5 x 28,5 cm (photographs); 26 x 35 cm (including mounting board). [ca 1891]. R 450

Photograph 1: The Fountains outside Pretoria. Photograph 2: Three men at The Fountains. Photograph 3: President Kruger's house in Pretoria. Photograph 4: Church Square, Pretoria, showing the Raadzaal and N.G. Kerk, with wagons drawn up around it (possibly there to celebrate Nagmaal). Seven men stand in front of the wagons and one holds the hand of a small girl wearing a large bonnet. Another appears to be looking at them and a ninth has moved and is merely a shadow. By their attire, the men represent a cross section of society at the time. The Raadzaal was the costliest building erected in southern Africa at the time and was the visible manifestation of the wealth gold and minerals had brought to the Z.A.R. Nevertheless, a fire with a traditional pot and a billy can can be seen in the foreground. Today this is one of the busiest circles in southern Africa!

116 [Independent Electoral Commission]. AN END TO WAITING: the story of South Africa's elections, 26 April to 6 May 1994; editors Paul Bell [and] Rian de Villiers; writers Paul Bell [and] Pat Schwartz; photographic editor, Paul Weinberg. Johannesburg: The Commission, 1995. 128 p.: ill. (chiefly ports.). 4to. Paperback. R 350

In April 1994 South Africa held its first fully democratic election. 19 726 610 citizens voted at 10 500 voting stations across the world. The process was overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission, headed by Judge Johann Kriegler. This book was published a year later and gives an overview of an event which must rank as one of the cornerstones of the new South Africa. It reminds the reader of the burden borne by the Commission and the pressure they experienced before the election could be declared "substantially free and fair". The title refers both to the years of waiting for a truly democratic country, and the patience of South Africans as they queued for hours to cast their votes. A marvellous account with photographs that

Anderson's father was the Durban Harbour Government Pilot and he grew up on and around the sea. He went on his first sea voyage in 1868. He writes descriptively of his travels in both hemispheres and provides interesting photographs of shipping in Natal waters. His account ends in 1895. Showing a keen eye for detail, he focuses on his travails at sea, injuries suffered and cargo carried and lost. A good maritime read!

Birkby then follows them northwards through Italy. The ill fitting dust wrapper is seldom seen- this one is "as new" and thus very unusual.

Long before WWII broke out, the rugby rivalry between New Zealand and South Africa had been cemented. Tours between the two rugby giants had begun in 1921 and to represent your country in a game against the All Blacks or the Springboks was considered the apogee of one’s Test career. During WWII this rivalry took the form of ribbing and verbal jousting, and on occasion, in the bars of Cairo, a more physical form of rivalry! There are also numerous tales told of servicemen from both nations going out of their way to assist or come to the rescue of their fellow rugby Allies on the battlefield. Throughout the Italian Campaign the 2nd New Zealand Division and 6th South African Division fought together and after the war ended it was suggested that a rugby “Test” match be arranged in Italy between representatives of the two Divisions. It was played at Rapallo on 10 November 1945, and whilst now forgotten and never included in official statistics was, in the minds of the men from both countries of that generation, considered the most important or symbolic game they had ever watched. Both sides fielded XVs filled with internationals or men who would go on to represent their countries at the highest level. The game was played in a great spirit and the referee was Capt. R.E. Prescott. Starting in the Western Desert, the rivalry referred to took the form of a suggestion, by both sides, that the other side should read “The Book” and thereby learn how to play rugby “properly”. Springbok soldiers would ask if their NZ counterparts had seen the book and digested it so that after the war they could offer better resistance to SA teams (the Springboks had become the first team to defeat the All Blacks in NZ in 1937) whilst the New Zealanders would suggest to the South Africans that their glaring lack of ability could easily be remedied by

the simple act of reading “The Book”. Thus the legend was born. Two South Africans, Lt. Keith Oxlee and Capt. J.G. Louden, are credited with the idea, before the game in Rapallo, of actually producing “The Book”, with the intent of handing it out to those present and the losing side being given a copy so that they could go away and study same! The idea was to make it like the Ashes, the twist being, that unlike the Ashes, the losing team would be given the “trophy”. In the event a small booklet was handed out at the game. They are extant, but the most sought after of rugby programmes and in great demand by collectors across the world. In 1949 Pat Swanepoel and others got together and recreated “The Book”, embellishing and expanding it and published it to celebrate the arrival of the 1949 All Blacks in South Africa on the first post-war Tour. Thus the publication now offered is not the original but has, in itself, become extremely scarce. It is a wonderful tribute to a sporting rivalry going back over 90 years and still growing stronger. Only those who possess a copy of “The Book” will know the score of that famous meeting in 1945 in Sports Stadium Rapallo!

Harris (1807-1848) joined the British East India Company in 1823 as a second-lieutenant. He arrived in Cape Town in June 1836 (now a Captain) to recover from fever. He arranged a hunting trip which lasted from 1836 to 1837 and saw him travel across what is now northern South Africa. Harris returned to India for three years before leading a diplomatic mission to Ethiopia (which led to two publications). He was knighted in 1844, and died of fever near Poona four years later.

awarded the MC and Bar. After the War, he applied for and received land in present-day Kenya, where he became a coffee farmer. As his land consisted of heavy forest, clearing it took most of his energy. Nevertheless, in his spare time he began climbing the high mountains of Central Africa, including Kilamanjaro, Ruwenzori and Mount Kenya. When he decided to leave Africa, he travelled westward alone via Stanleyville, Bangassu, Yaunde and finally to Duala in the Cameroons. He found his trip westward boring, the country neither rough nor diverse enough in its population. His descriptions make light of the mountaineering feats achieved (mostly with Eric Shipton), the ridges crossed with sheer falls on either side, rocks so cold they could not be touched and rock hard ice that had to be navigated- his account is impressive and enthralling. He went on to become the most celebrated adventurer of his era and even the titles of his later books give the measure of the man. In 1937 he also published THE ASCENT OF NANDA DEVI; and then EVEREST (1938); WHEN MEN AND MOUNTAINS MEET (1946); TWO MOUNTAINS AND A RIVER (1949) amongst others. In 1939 he again joined the British Army and saw action at Dunkirk and in North Africa. Parachuted behind the lines on several occasions to fight alongside Italian and Albanian partisans, he was awarded the DSO. Post war Tilman spent substantial time on expeditions in the most remote corners of the world: after a longitudinal crossing of the Southern Patagonian ice field, he lost his life, aged nearly eighty, somewhere in the South Atlantic south of Rio de Janerio when the tug he was on sank with all hands. He had been en route to climb on Smith Island, the most remote island in the South Shetland Islands of the Antarctic Peninsula. On leaving Duala he wrote of his time in Africa: " For fourteen years- a fifth of our allotted span- Africa had been my task-mistress, and now I was leaving her. If she had not given me the fortune I expected, she had given me something better- memories, mountains, friends. We dropped down the river whose muddy waters were soon to be lost in the clean blue immensity of the sea, while the Cameroon mountain, showing faintly astern, waved to me Africa's last farewell. (p. 265). Classic Africana!

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje (1876-1932) was born in Boshof in the Free State and grew up on a Lutheran Mission Station. He was largely self-educated, could speak eight languages, and was widely travelled. He became a political journalist and was a founder member of the African Native National Congress, becoming the organization’s first Secretary-General in 1912. MHUDI was the first novel written in English by a black African. The story concerns Mzilikazi's routing of the Baralong, during the ferment of the 1830s. Mhudi and her husband Ra-Thaga are present when the Baralong form an alliance with the Boer frontiersmen of the Great Trek, resulting in the Battle of Vegkop, under the tail of Hailey's Comet. Among his other works were NATIVE LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA (a plea against the Land Act of 1913, which he believed would cause great damage to race relations) and SeTswana translations of Shakespearean works. He was strongly opposed to tribalism and exemplified the spirit of national unity among African intellectuals. The Kimberley municipal district has been named the Sol Plaatje Municipality in his honour.

Sir Charles 'it is stated with good authority' was forbidden to lead the attack, but was nevertheless censured by Lord Roberts… he was given no long-range guns to reply to those of the Boers, and Thorneycroft gives this prominently as a reason for retiring, which he did without consulting his superiors in rank, and against the advice of those around him." 265 Prior, Melton. DEATH OF GENERAL COLLEY AT MAJUBA HILL. 25,5 x 34,5 cm (sketch) 42 x 51 cm (including frame and mounting board). Pencil sketch signed and annotated by Melton Prior, dated March 1881; white mounting board and gilded wooden frame. Annotations on sketch: "General about 5'10", broad shoulders"and "troops running away, officers trying to stop them" at top of sketch; "1 minute before General Colley was shot" and "General Colley at the battle of Majuba, Feb. 27. 1881" at the bottom. R 12000

Prior (1845-1910) became one of England's best known illustrators, working for the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. He had the ability to draw quickly and accurately and it became apparent to his employers that he did not shirk from joining troops on the frontline and often sketched whilst under fire. He covered the Ashanti, Russo-Turkish, Zulu and First Boer Wars. He also joined the expedition down the Nile under Kitchener. He returned to Southern Africa and covered the Jameson Raid, the Matabele Uprising and the South African War, 1899-1902, where he was besieged in Ladysmith. He went on the Somaliland Expedition of 1903 and finally covered the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. Although he was not on Majuba Hill, Prior had been close to the battle and relied on John Cameron of THE STANDARD to explain the battle to him and to describe how Colley had been shot. When the subsequent Peace was signed at the foot of Majuba in O'Neill's cottage, he was one of the first journalists to convey the news to his editor in London. Annotated in Prior's usual manner, the sketch captures the chaos of battle, and re-inforces the cherished image of a British officer: although some troops can be seen fleeing, Colley stands firm and erect, with his hand up in an attempt to halt them. To his right, a wounded Highlander runs to his side, rifle at the ready; and a fallen Highlander officer raises his sword in defiance. Others tumble over, shot. A significant moment is recorded for posterity by one of the Emipre's foremost illustrators. The sketch does not appear in Jane Carruthers' MELTON PRIOR: war artist in Southern Africa, 1895 to 1900. (Brenthurst 1987).

Schroder-Nielsen was a young Norwegian land-surveyor who lived among the Boers. Having been befriended by them, he was appalled by the destruction of their farms and the incarceration of civilians by British forces. His empathy for their plight led to his joining the Boer forces and he describes their military tactics, improvisations and onerous circumstances. He provides graphic detail of battles such as Vlakfontein and Moedwil. He was captured by the British and ended the war in a prisoner-of-war camp on Bermuda and returned to Norway in July 1902.
