No matter howstrong you think youare, you’re stronger. We’ll prove it.Our classes are small. So we’ll know you as more

than a number. We’ll know your favorite bands,

the writers who inspire you, the ideas that spark

your curiosity, and – most important – when

you’re ready for a bigger challenge. And because

we’ll know you, we’ll be able to help you choose

experiences that are based on your unique

strengths, interests, and goals.

We even have a name for our individualized

approach to your education: StrongPointsTM.

Through this distinctive program, you’ll identify

your strengths and then explore how those

strengths can help you shape your academic

goals, experiential involvement, financial plans,

and choice of career.

When you graduate, you’ll have a truly impressive

resume. One that will show employers and

graduate schools why you’re the strongest

candidate. Maybe that’s why so many of our

alumnae end up being leaders in business,

education, and science and math fields –

among others.

Here is Meredith’s promise to you: No matter

how strong you think you are, you’re stronger.

Come to Meredith and we’ll prove it.

Ninety-seven percent of our alumnae say they’d recommend Meredith to other students.

And 98% saw important benefits in attending a women’s college.

Strong enough to attract the best.Over the past century many colleges have come

and gone. So, making it to the ripe old age of 123

(and counting!) says a lot about an institution’s

strength. Longevity, however, is just one of

Meredith College’s assets.

Meredith gets strong reviews. U.S. News has

named us one of the nation’s 20 most popular

liberal arts colleges and a Best Value among

the South’s top regional institutions. Forbes

places Meredith in the top 20 percent of colleges

nationwide. And The Princeton Review calls

Meredith one of the Southeast’s best colleges.

We’re also one of only two women’s colleges in

the world whose School of Business is accredited

by AACSB International. We hold the highest

levels of program accreditation in education,

social work, nutrition, music, and interior design.

And we’re among the “Top 50 Alma Maters of

National Board Certified Teachers” – Meredith

was one of only two private institutions in the U.S.

to make the list.

But the ranking that means the most comes from

our own graduates. Ninety-three percent say

they’d choose Meredith all over again. That’s

strong praise, indeed.

Meredith faculty have the impressive accolades

you’d expect at a top-ranked college. They

publish articles in leading academic journals,

present at global conferences, and win national

and international awards.

But Meredith faculty are as passionate

about teaching as they are about scholarship.

Our professors will help you discern your

strengths, academic and personal, and then

develop ways to build on them. That approach

affects the kind of college experience you’ll have

and the kind of life you’ll lead.

It means that when you get back a paper you’ve

turned in, you won’t see a hastily-scratched

grade from a teaching assistant (in part because

there are none at Meredith). Instead, you’re likely

to find detailed feedback and an invitation to

talk about it in person. If you’re curious about

undergraduate research, you’ll discuss options

with your faculty adviser and then when it’s

done, you might be invited to co-author a paper

together and submit it for publication. It’s not at

all unusual for one of our students to have a one-

on-one discussion over an extended lunch with

a professor – or invite a faculty member to her

wedding, years after graduation.

And when you need a letter of recommendation

for a job or graduate school, you won’t have to

provide a resume with a photo to remind your

professors of who you are – they’ll know

how to describe what makes you strong in

glowing detail.

Of the 122 full-time faculty members, 91% have earned doctoral or terminal degrees.

Our professors know: You’re asstrong as you think.

Strong partnerships yield strong results. What part of your Meredith experience

helped you grow the most? When we ask

our students this question, they often talk about

a faculty mentor who both challenged and

encouraged them.

Lara Pantlin’s research with Professor of

Psychology Cynthia Edwards is a case in point.

After Lara approached Dr. Edwards about

working on a Summer Research Partnership

together, they spent the summer developing

their research plan. Data collection for Lara’s

research project – Meredith Emerging Adulthood

Longitudinal Studies (MEALS) – began in the fall.

Lara envisioned the project as one that might

offer other students a way to engage in

research, so she and Dr. Edwards built MEALS

to accommodate additional studies, both large

and small. With eleven students now a part of

the MEALS lab, the project also allowed Lara to

gain experience mentoring other students – ideal

preparation for her goal of becoming a professor.

And she credits Dr. Edwards’ empowering style

of advising with helping her develop her own

leadership qualities.

With the support of Dr. Edwards, Lara also

presented her research at local, regional, and

national conferences. The presentation skills and

confidence she gained added to her resume and

enhanced her application to graduate school.

The result? She was awarded a full academic

scholarship for a highly competitive cognitive

neuroscience Ph.D. program – a perfect next

step for this strong student, and a rewarding

outcome for a proud professor.

Watch a video to hear more of Lara and Dr. Edwards’ story at meredith.edu/research.

Strong women have a plan.Sure, college is a time to explore, learn, and

try new things. But more than that, college

should prepare you for a fulfilling career and a

satisfying life.

That’s why we created StrongPointsTM.

Exclusive to Meredith and a key element of every

student’s education, this comprehensive program

is designed to help you make the most of your

college experience.

Through StrongPoints, you’ll identify your

strengths, explore academic and experiential

activities to build on those strengths, enhance

your financial literacy, and examine potential

career paths. With the guidance of trained

advisers, you’ll create a plan to achieve your

goals in college – and after you graduate.

Your plan will outline the academic path you’ll

take to pursue your major and minor(s). Through

StrongPoints, you’ll also identify ways to expand

your knowledge through real-world experiences

such as professional internships, study abroad,

undergraduate research, and service-learning.

You might enroll in a leadership development

program. Volunteer for a local nonprofit.

Participate in networking events. Or shadow a

Meredith alumna who is a professional in your

field of interest.

And although you’ll direct the development of

your StrongPoints plan, you’ll be guided by

expert faculty and staff who will ensure that all of

the elements of your plan are working together

toward the strongest outcome possible.

Because at Meredith, we know how to make

the most of your strong potential.

Meredith’s ideal location means you’ll connect with

opportunities for research, internships, and career

development.

We’re 10 minutes from the State Capitol, the State

Legislative Building, and the State Archives. We’re

just minutes away from Research Triangle Park (RTP),

where our students intern, conduct research, and

accept permanent jobs. And we’re within 30 minutes

of some of the nation’s other leading universities

where our students collaborate in world-class

research programs.

But college isn’t just about what comes after you

graduate – it’s also a time to branch out and explore.

Our location in the top-ranked city of Raleigh is your

perfect launching pad. It’s easy to get around, people

are friendly, and there’s always something going on.

Head downtown to a food truck roundup. Attend

a concert – no matter what kind of music you like,

top artists come here. Take in a college football or

basketball game, watch the Stanley Cup-winning

Hurricanes, or cheer on the Avenging Angels at home.

Visit one of the local award-winning museums,

including our neighboring N.C. Museum of Art. If

you’re up for a road trip, the beach and mountains

are an easy drive, as are cities like Washington,

D.C., Atlanta, Ga., and Richmond, Va. The sky’s

in the Southeast). Direct service projects in

the community. Develop your leadership skills

through nationally-recognized programs like the

LeaderShape® Institute.

Meredith offers big opportunities to get involved.

Over 100 clubs and organizations include service

organizations, performing arts groups, and religious,

social, and academic clubs. Students also produce

a newspaper, a yearbook, and an award-winning art

and literature journal.

If you’re into the cultural arts, Meredith hosts

lectures, juried student exhibitions, an active concert

schedule, and exhibitions and performances

featuring professional artists. Students participate

in theatre and dance performance troupes and a

variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles. Some

are just for dance, music, and theatre majors, but

many are open to all students.

Who knows? You might be a budding thespian

or class president waiting to be unleashed. We’re

confident that here, you’ll have the guts to step up

and try out.

A strong woman plays to win.

For more than 100 years, the Avenging Angels

have been taking the field. (Meredith’s 1904

game against St. Mary’s is the earliest known

intercollegiate basketball match in Wake County.)

In the tradition of the NCAA’s Division III, Meredith

blends intercollegiate athletics with a strong

academic program. We field seven teams:

basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer,

softball, tennis, and volleyball. Our athletes

meet the same academic standards as other

students – in fact, Meredith athletes in season

typically average a higher GPA than when out of

season. They also frequently earn weekly and all-

conference recognition.

And when they come off the field or court, our

athletes take what they’ve learned about winning

and apply it to class work, internships, group

projects, and careers. They understand what

being a team player is all about, know how

to assert their point of view, and can manage

competing demands on their time. Employers

appreciate our student athletes because they are

well-balanced, confident women.

Even after graduation, our athletes continue to

reap the proven benefits that women gain by

playing sports: increased self-esteem, positive

body image, and great leadership skills.

In 2013, 54 Meredith College student-athletes were named to the USA South Athletic Conference’s

All-Academic Team – 8 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Find out more about Meredith athletics at

goavengingangels.com.

Page 23: Meredith College Viewbook 2014-15

A member of the USA South Athletic

Conference since 2007, we’ve claimed

tournament titles in lacrosse, soccer,

and tennis, a regular season soccer

championship, and a cross country

championship.

STRONGENOUGH TO

LAST ALIFETIME.Meredith women can spot the onyx ring

from across the room. They know the true

meaning of honor. They believe that

women have the power to change the

world – and can give you examples of how

it’s happening, every day. And, they know

that together they can accomplish far

more than they ever can on their own.

As a Meredith Angel, you’ll join a network

of nearly 19,000 graduates who offer

valuable friendship and connections that

remain long after you’ve graduated. That

means you have a powerful sisterhood of

women who will be there for you – for the

big life events, and for the little ones. On a

practical level, it means you’ll have instant

connections in every state in the country

and around the world.

Meredith women look out for each other

and advocate for one another profession-

ally. That’s because they know the kind of

women a Meredith education develops:

smart, confident, ethical leaders who

work hard and know how to make things

happen. And, every successful alumna

enhances the value of a Meredith

degree – making it an investment that

gets stronger with each passing year.

More than one hundred years ago, Meredith began

educating the South’s brightest and most promising

young women. Our first class graduated in 1902.

They are known as the Immortal Ten.

Today, we graduate nearly 500 women each year

who come from 26 states and 40 countries. And the

thousands of women who have graduated since that

first class have made an indelible impact on

our world. Among our alumnae you’ll find a N.C.

Supreme Court Chief Justice. The first woman and

first African-American officer to hold command roles

in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Navy. The first

woman to hold a leadership position in the N.C.

House and Senate. The first femal journalist to anchor

a national news broadcast. A Tony-Award winning

actress. Fulbright scholars. Professors, deans,

and presidents at some of the top colleges and

universities in the country.

The first female U.S. Attorney in North Carolina.

Vice Presidents at major corporations like

McDonalds, Bayer CropScience, and Toyota.

Teachers of the Year (so many we’ve lost count).

Founders of nonprofits. Entrepreneurs.

Did you know that an overwhelming majority of

women in leadership positions worldwide are

graduates of women’s colleges?

We’re not surprised. When we look at our students,

we see women who intend to make a difference in the

world. And they see Meredith as a way to make that

happen. That’s because Meredith has a long tradi-

tion of helping strong, bright women become even

brighter and stronger. And, in turn, Meredith women

go on to use their intelligence and strength in their

careers, in their communities, and in their families

to make the world a better place.
