One of the most rewarding parts of my job is reading the many comments that our audience send in by email, on feedback cards or in one of our regular online surveys.

The fact that so many people say that our shows are of a West End standard means a huge amount to all of us here at the Mercury - particularly when we’re working with a fraction of the budget of a big London production!

It won’t surprise you to know that a huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to create hit shows like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Butterfly Lion, Dial M for Murder and Betty Blue Eyes. In fact, every year our annual pantomime is a full twelve months in the making – and, this year, Cinderella is no exception! As I write, in July, the set and costumes for this year’s traditional family treat are already under construction, and let me tell you they look great. I can’t wait to start rehearsals!

Last year we presented an ambitious mix of home-grown drama, musicals and family shows together with some of the very best touring theatre, music, dance, comedy and variety available in the UK, and I’m delighted to say that we saw 4,000 more visits to the Mercury than in the previous twelve months.

We couldn’t have done that without your support. So I want to thank you, and also take this opportunity to invite you to become an ‘official’ Friend of the Mercury Theatre.

Did you know that the Mercury is a registered charity? Our Friends donate £26 per year (50p per week) to help us maintain the exceptional quality of our work. In return they receive priority booking, an invitation to an exclusive summer ‘thank you’ event, a drinks voucher and up to six free ticket exchanges per year. But really, being a Friend is about helping us to continue as the most active producing theatre in East Anglia - developing talent and delighting audiences.

If you’d like to become a Friend, do please go to our website and click Support Us, or give us a call on 01206 573948 and select option 2.

I hope you enjoy our Autumn/Winter season, and thanks again for your continued support.

WELCOME

THU 21 – SAT 23 AUGWe don’t need no education!

When Pink Floyd’s iconic double album burst onto the music scene in 1979, it caught the imagination of a generation with its epic rock score, including songs such as Another Brick In The Wall, and its heart-rending tale of the rise and fall of a rock star called Pink.

From its opening track, culminating in the sounds of a plane crashing and a baby crying, The Wall plunged its audience into a surreal journey through misunderstood childhood, troubled marriage, social isolation and, ultimately, to the brink of madness. It was and remains, without doubt, one of the most theatrical rock concept albums ever produced.

Now the Mercury Young Company returns to the stage, fresh from their 2013 sold-out stage adaptation of Quadrophenia, to bring Roger Waters’ extraordinary rock opera to life for a new generation.

FRI 29 AUG – SAT 13 SEPA thrilling tale of extraordinary friendship from master storyteller Michael Morpurgo, the prize-winning author of War Horse and The Butterfly Lion.

Evacuated from London at the height of the Second World War, David and Tucky can’t help feeling as though the fighting is a long way away from their new lives in the countryside. But then suddenly, one night, the skyline is lit up with gun flashes and the distant sound of bombing shatters their new found peace.

And when a German plane crashes on their farm the boys are plunged into a breathtaking adventure and faced with a life-and-death moral dilemma.

Our 2013 production of The Butterfly Lion was the Mercury’s biggest selling show, so book early to secure your seats for the latest Michael Morpurgo classic to hit the stage.

THU 2 – SAT 18 OCTShakespeare’s ultimate exploration of political ambition, and the extraordinary lengths to which one couple will go to secure their place in history, is brought chillingly to life at the Mercury this Autumn in a brand new production directed by Daniel Buckroyd.

Cut through the pageantry and sweep aside the supernatural and what you’re left with is a terrifying picture of a world in which the future of a nation, indeed the very humanity of the man and woman at the heart of the unfolding political storm, hang on the fate of a single child. Will no one step forward to protect the innocent? After all, what’s the point of winning power today only to lose it ... tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow?

Screw your courage to the sticking place and witness Shakespeare’s bloody masterpiece in this striking, new production created in a traditional style.
