Mercer Girls Chapter NSDAR NEWS

As I sit by my dining room table with the window open today, I can smell the lovely fragrance from the roses my husband grows. It is June and time to relax and enjoy the summer heat and the warm evenings. Father’s Day is fast approaching, and I have yet to do my shopping. I’ll get that done after I get things for the tea. This is the last meeting of the 2018-2019 DAR year. Please come to the meeting and enjoy mid-morning tea, friendships, and a program by Claudia Underhill on Dolls and Historic Women. She has over 400 dolls but promised to only bring only a few. This year, June 6 will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D Day, 1944. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. Please remember to fly your flag and take a moment to give thanks for the soldiers who gave their lives that day and for those who survived. June 14 is Flag Day—another opportunity to re- member to fly the Flag. Take a picture of yourself and the Flag and send it to Dana Lanaworthy so she can post it on the Chapter Facebook page. This year, Karen Stahl and I will be attending our first Continental Congress with HSR Carol Jean Gaffney and Katherine Gaffney. How exciting for us first-timers. Because Mercer Girls Chapter earned the Bronze Level in the American Spirit Subscription contest, we will get a special ribbon to wear to let others know how well the Chapter did. ldquoThe Horizon Course has cemented my dedication to DAR Prior to this course I did not realize the major role that service plays in DAR I assumed the major components were history and patriotism This has also been a commitment on my part I am pleased that the course was as involved as it was I do not feel this was time wasted I learned a great deal about the history of DAR and the inner workings of the current organization It also makes me dedicated to my local chapter in fulfilling the DAR mission in our local communityrdquo Lila Beasley Tennessee

Katie DouglasIt was such a delight for me to be inducted into the Mercer Girls DAR chapter on Saturday May 11th My mom and I spent a lot of time to get to that point which made it extra special to have her there and be inducted with me Also I want to give Linda Fogarty a special thank you for helping us It has been a lifetime goal for me to explore my ancestry to see if I could become a member of the DARNow about me I went to high school in Olympia college in Tacoma and moved to Seattle for good I spent my entire career working with people with developmental disabilities to help them reach their goals in life For the last 30 years of my career I helped people find jobs with minimum wages or above I retired from Seattle Community College as the director of Mainstay a program working to get people with disabilities employment For the last 29 years my husband and I have run a business doing excavation work and house raising in Seattle Since my retirement I have helped him in our business doing the infamous ldquoall other duties as assignedrdquo

So now nearer and dearer to my heart I met my husband Frank at work and we have been married 33 years We live in Ballard and have two sons a daughter from Frankrsquos previous marriage and one grandson We have raised our boys here They are all grown up and work in the Seattle area I feel lucky to have them all close by us I bought my house when I was 26 years old single knowing nothing about house repair plumbing yard work etc Thankfully Frank joined me five years later Wersquove had several remodels to expand our square footage and are still living in the same house I love to garden I have been spending my spare moments pulling weeds and poking little starts into the ground I still get excited every spring to plant seeds and watch them grow eat the harvest and then prepare the dirt for next spring

Today we honor dear old DadIn homes both near and farSo give a special thought to himWho wears the golden star

He too has suffered cruellySo Freedom might be wornHe too has given all he couldHis daughter or his son

Look deep into his heart today And read his secret painGive him your understanding loveSo he may smile again

2 Sign up for the New Horizon Course (free) This is for Daughters who would like to learn more about the leadership of DAR Here are some quotes from the Silver Arrow Newsletter

ldquoThe Horizon Course has cemented my dedication to DAR Prior to this course I did not realize the major role that service plays in DAR I assumed the major components were history and patriotism This has also been a commitment on my part I am pleased that the course was as involved as it was I do not feel this was time wasted I learned a great deal about the history of DAR and the inner workings of the current organization It also makes me dedicated to my local chapter in fulfilling the DAR mission in our local communityrdquo Lila Beasley Tennessee

I feel more qualified to serve as a chapter officer Having been a member only since 2014 I had a lot to learn I have a greater appreciation for the volunteer and service activities of DAR Carol Persons Floore Mississippi

There was a lot of work but I feel that it has better prepared me to step into the role of Regent for my chapter It forced me to look up different information on the DAR website and for that I learned where to look for information and forms As a result of this course I have submitted my first article to ldquoWith the Chapterrdquo and it was published in the MayJune 2018 issue Patricia Palmer Missouri
