Mercedes College Dear Parents, Staff and Students of the Mercedes College Community, Decisions, decisions, decisions Every day of our lives we make important decisions. Decisions that affect our lives and those of the people with which we share our lives. Some decisions are straight forward and seem of little importance while others seem to take on life changing proportions. In reality every time we make a decision we make a choice that has the potential to change the course of our lives. On the surface this could cause mind numbing indecision. I suppose it all comes down to how we see change. Our faith helps us here. If we plan, consider alternatives and listen to advice and wisdom of those we respect and leave ourselves open to the influence of the Holy Spirit we can face the act of making decisions with confidence. This is the time of year when a number of our students are making the important decision of what subjects they need to study next year. Our current Year 10 and 11 students are deciding upon whether they will study the IB Diploma or the SACE and then what subjects they will take in either. What a wonderful choice to make. Mercedes College students are fortunate that they have the choice. There are only seven other schools in this state which offer the choice between the IB Diploma and the SACE and Mercedes has been offering it for the longest period of time. Indeed our current students are in a unique position in that they have now had the opportunity to study the International Baccalaureate Programme from Reception through to Year 12. This is something to be celebrated. I am hopeful that the study of the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) that is part of the SACE and is studied by all our Year 10 students, has provided the opportunity for students to inform themselves of all the information required to make these important subject choices. I am confident that if each student takes the time to consider their own interests and needs, consults with their teachers and families and allows a little space for the Holy Spirit they will make the decision that is right for them. Decisions of Another Kind Unfortunately from time to time some students in our community make choices that are not in their best interest. Even with the extensive work we do at school and I am sure is done at home, there still seems to be some of our young people making dangerous decisions about the way they communicate in the cyber world. I am concerned that some students feel it is OK to disclose personal information on the net and continue to “speak’’ with people who they do not know. This is dangerous behaviour and despite all the information that our young people are given some still have the attitude that those “bad” things that happen will not happen to them. Unfortunately they can! Although we do include comprehensive discussions about appropriate net behaviour within the curriculum at the College I ask all families to take time to address this issue with their children. Dear Parents, Staff and Students of the Mercedes College Community,

Decisions, decisions, decisionsEvery day of our lives we make important decisions. A Friday Thought

Made in the Image of GodIn recent years the Catholic Education Office has revised the programme used to teach human sexuality within Catholic schools. It is called “Made in the Image of God” and has four strands within it. They are: “Being Human”, “Being Sexual”, “Being Connected” and “Being Moral”. As the names of the strands indicate, the programme wishes to place human sexual behaviour within the wider context of our human identity. At the heart of that identity is our source of being – God’s outpouring of creative love.

The College is using the documents from the programme to evaluate the way we currently undertake human sexuality education. As holistic educators formed in the Catholic tradition, we have

the ultimate aim of complementing family based education and aiding our students to “have life to the full”. To do this we seek to guide them about the difference between true freedom and false freedom. Unfortunately, many of the messages in our society emphasise immediate gratification, rather than deep happiness. “Made in the Image of God” is a programme that aims to explore these important matters in a more balanced way.

Further information is available via links at CESA online. The parent consultative body is the Faith and Spirituality Standing Committee of the College Council, Mr Andrew Kirkbride is the Chair of that Committee.

From the Junior School

The Junior School has been a hive of activity over the past two weeks. Students have experienced French Shadow Puppets and a highly entertaining French Assembly which showcased our students’ knowledge and skills with the French language. Mademoiselle Belinda Reed continues to inspire and engage our students and I thank her for her passion and creativity. The Petanque Competition has started in earnest with students to be congratulated on their positive sporting spirit.

A number of our Year 3 students received their Confirmation recently at The Monastery. Archbishop Phillip Wilson and Fr Brendan Connell led this lovely ceremony and it was wonderful to see so many families, relatives and friends present. I would like to especially thank Mrs Irena Hollis, Mrs Pauline Crocker and Fr Brendan Connell for their support of these students. Congratulations to the following students:

Various classes participated in the Startsmart Financial Literacy Workshops, our Year 1 students went to Warrawong Sanctuary and enjoyed a visit from the Zoo Mobile, and Year 4 students visited Hallet Cove to investigate the land formations. The Year 5 students are singing with gusto as they gear up for the IPSHA Music Festival in Week 7 while the Year 2 and 4 students continue to work enthusiastically practising songs, dances and their lines in preparation for the fast approaching Junior School Production.

A dedicated team approach by the Junior School Staff is certainly evident and I feel blessed to work with such a dynamic group. Our students are indeed fortunate to experience such a range of opportunities and experiences.

JS French Poetry Competition 2010On Tuesday 27 July, students from Reception to Year 5 were involved in the French Poetry Competition. The competition, run by the South Australian French Teachers Association, involves learning a French poem off by heart and reciting it with expression and correct pronunciation. The students were divided into 3 groups; R/1, Year 2/3 and Year 4/5. The College was asked to choose the best 3 students from each group. Their recital was recorded and sent in to be judged against other students from the state.

The competition was very popular and it was fantastique to see so many children being risk-takers! The Year 4/5 poem for this year was particularly difficult, so bravo to the students from those year levels who entered the competition. The judges were Mademoiselle Belinda Reed, Madame Dana Bosce, Mademoiselle Lara McEvoy, Madame Lesley Davies and Madame Melissa Buske. It was very difficult to decide on only 3 winners from each group because everyone was so magnifique! We gave some commendations to students who impressed the judges.

Learning ReviewsYear 6-10 Learning Reviews will be held on Thursday 19 August in Gleeson Hall. These reviews are aimed at assisting students who are experiencing some difficulties in their studies. Teachers will soon be making contact with parents directly, if they feel there is a need to discuss your child’s progress in their subject. This is also an opportunity for parents to make contact with subject teachers if there are any concerns you wish to discuss about the progress of your child(ren) and arrange a time to meet with them on this night - again this can be done by making direct contact with the teacher involved or via the diary.

Induction Day for students R-8 2011The induction for all students R-8 2011 will take place on Friday 12 November 2010 (Week 5, Term 4). The Induction Evening for parents new to the Middle School will follow this on Tuesday 16 November. More information on these two events will be provided as they approach.

As part of this process of preparing for next term’s 2011 Induction Day, Middle School teachers and Year Level Coordinators have begun the complex task of constructing classes for next year. Current students have been offered an opportunity to have some input into who they would like to be in classes with next year but it is important that students and parents are aware that classes will not be based on friendship groups alone.

Teaching staff have the benefit of seeing students interacting in class on a daily basis and consequently are able to make informed judgements on where students should be placed for best educational outcomes. Other considerations that need to be taken into account include class size, gender balance and numbers of new verses current students. It is important that students and parents are aware that once classes are set for Induction Day no changes will be possible.

Year 6 World Travel ExpoThe Year 6 students are currently working on this interdisciplinary unit that requires them to work collaboratively within a group to research a world travel destination. The students develop a corporate identity (a Tourist Agency) and create appropriate brochures, posters, power point presentations and the like to help promote their chosen destination.

The project culminates in an evening where parents and families are able to peruse the various tourist destinations on offer, collect relevant information and ask specific questions of the “Travel Agents”. The Year 6 World Travel Expo will take place on Monday 20 September (Week 10, Term 3). Please put this new date into your diaries as there is a very hectic end to this term, and we would not want anybody to miss the opportunity of attending this event. We wish the students well as they progress with their work on this topic.

Year 8 ImmunisationsThe next set of Immunisations for our Year 8 students are set to take place on Tuesday 14 September (Week 9). The nurses will administer the second dose of Hepatitis B Vaccination to the Year 8 cohort and the Year 8 girls will also receive the third HPV dose. Please remember that it is parental responsibility to advise the vaccinator on the day of immunisation of any change in the information on the consent form, in particular, your child’s medical condition. If vaccination is not to be given, please provide a written note in your child’s diary.

State Legislation on Child Safety Restraint in Vehicles

under. Copies of this information is available at Strathspey Reception.

Australian Government Assistance for National Capital Excursion

Students from our school have recently undertaken an educational tour of the National Capital. While on the tour they participated in a variety of educational programmes focussed on Australian history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship Education. To assist in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this programme.

Year 12 NewsTerm 3 has begun with a bang - when do terms begin in any other way? We have had our Trial Exam Week and the results have been reported to the students. A summary of these results will be available to parents very soon which identify the percentage score for each examination set. Teachers have been working with their students to review this process and there has been (in general) a feeling that most students prepared well for these exams and took them seriously as a trial run for their final exams in November. Tertiary Entrance is the next aspect to be at the forefront of the Year 12s minds. We have had the relevant guides delivered to assist in making these decisions and I encourage you to discuss this regularly with your children. Be involved in assisting them in wading through the information on courses, prerequisites, assumed knowledge and bonus points. There is much to be absorbed and I know that the students will appreciate your involvement. Finally we are also beginning to turn our attention to the Graduation ceremonies to be held in October and November. Dates for your Calendars are October 22 (Graduation Assembly and Mass) and November 19 (Graduation Ball). These events will be special occasions for you to celebrate as families so I encourage you all to be involved in these too. More details about these events will be distributed to you shortly via a personal letter, so stay watching your letter box! I thank you all for your support for the students as they embark on what proves to be a very busy and rewarding term. Hang in there - only about 3 months to go!

Year 11 IB Life DrawingEarlier this year the Year 11 IB Visual Art students attended a one day workshop to explore and develop insights into the practice of life drawing. This day was an opportunity for students to enhance their observation and drawing skills with artist Chelsea Lehmann. This experience was also a terrific opportunity for students to enhance and extend their drawing skills and art portfolios in relation to their studio practice.

Mercedes College NewsletterPage 6

Following this day all participants involved took part in exhibiting their life drawing as a part of the 2010 SALA Festival at Carclew Youth Arts Centre. The exhibition was opened by artist Trevor Newman who gave an inspiring talk about his life as an artist. The night was a complete success and was a great opportunity for students to celebrate their talents.

MYP Craft GroupDuring Semester 1 this year, students from the Middle Years Programme were selected to take part in an after school extra-curricular Art and Craft Workshop. The aim of this workshop was to introduce additional skills to the current Art and Design curriculum at Years 6-10. This also provided students with alternative ways to express their creative ideas and talents. Students learnt how to make their own felt, soft toys and other craft items, such as Christmas decorations. All students involved in this group took an active role in selling their work on Caritas Day raising approximately $150 and at the end of Semester 1, we donated over 40 soft toys to Coolock House. Coolock House is a Mercy Charity that supports homeless young mothers in our local community. Year 11 IB students were also involved in the running of this group and were on hand to assist younger students with their work as part of their creativity, action and service commitments. This workshop was a great success and the Art Department is looking forward to its ongoing commitment to helping Mercy charities in years to follow.

Family Matters

Building Better Relationships The following “Fact sheet” has been provided by the Commonwealth Government’s “The Line” website.

We all have busy lives and taking small amounts of time to really be with and listen to children, can create stronger relationships. Each family is unique, so find a way that works for you. Create an open environment where they feel safe to say what they feel. Be honest with them and make sure no topic is out of bounds. Young people need to talk about relationships, drugs, death and everything else, with the people they trust. If they ask the question, they are ready for some information. Use everyday opportunities to talk, initiate conversations, communicate your values and be open to their views.

Talking With Teenagers Communication with teenagers can be challenging. Teens want privacy and independence and may find it embarrassing to talk to their parents. With teens you have to take the initiative. Six ways to build trust with teens are:

• Spend time with your teenager whatever way you can • Respect their privacy • Take an interest in their interests and share yours • Have faith in them • Even if they don’t seem to need it, be there for them • Take care of yourself – you are a great role model • Even if you don’t see eye to eye, let them know you care for them.

10 Things Your Child Needs To Know About You:1. You love them, no matter what. Let your children know you love them unconditionally. Emphasise that they do not always need to be good, successful, or smart for you to love them. Love their successes and failures.

2. You respect them. Children deserve respect too! You will teach your children a lot about respecting other people’s values and boundaries, when you show them respect.

3. You support them. Be supportive in their decisions, as long as it is not something that will cause them harm. Help them towards their dreams and goals.

4. You listen to them. Listen without judgement or criticism or talking about yourself. You don’t need to understand, relate or like what they are saying. Just listen.

5. You are happy they are in your life. Let your child know how much joy they bring. Show them that you value them as they are.

6. You like them. Tell them what unique qualities you admire. Encourage them to share their skills and talents with you.

7. You are interested in them. Be inquisitive in a good way. Show enthusiasm when they are speaking. Be curious about what they are saying, but don’t interrupt.

8. You want to understand them. Let your child know when you do not understand what they are going through. Ask them to share, but don’t push. Let them come to you of their own free will.

9. You are thankful for what they do. Show gratitude for the little things, even if it is their responsibility. Thank them when they do something without you asking.

10. You want to help them. If your child needs help, be there.

News From the Sports Desk

Boys Sport ReportIn a little over a weeks time, we meet St Ignatius College at Mercedes, for the 6th Intercollegiate. This is when 40 teams compete against each other in Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Chess, Cross Country, Soccer, Football, Debating and Table Tennis between Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 August. No doubt we will be anticipating more of a competition than in 2009, the first clash won by SIC. The overall score is 3/1 to Mercedes with a draw in the inaugural year, in 2005. In the 2010 programme, one more shield - in Open C Netball- is available to provide more opportunities for girls. Designated the Penny Wannop-Danielle Grant Shield, it acknowledges Old Scholar, Penny Wannop who was the first from Mercedes to represent Australia in Netball. Penny attended the AIS in 2000 and in that year was selected in the 21 and Under Australian Team that competed in Wales in the World Youth Cup. Australia won the title and Penny returned to spend three seasons with the Sydney Sandpipers before retiring in Sydney where she married. Penny is enjoying time off from working as an investment banker whilst she cares for her son, Jackson James. The Open “A” Netball Best Player Medal is named

after Old Scholar, Natalie Medhurst (1996-2001) who is in the Australian team currently preparing for the Commonwealth Games in a test series against Jamaica and New Zealand.

Last week, Old Scholar Keegan Brooksby made his SANFL debut for South Adelaide against Norwood playing in the ruck. Whilst Norwood won comfortably, Keegan played well in his first game. He played 1st XV111 Football and Open Basketball in his time at Mercedes. His greatest love was Basketball - he represented SA in many State Basketball teams from U/12 upwards. A SASI scholarship holder, he persevered for many years with knee injuries, finally succumbing to an operation for patella tendonitis early in the 2010 season. At 6’7’’ and 100kgs, Keegan follows his father Phillip who played over 200 games for South Adelaide. His recovery has been excellent and after 20 or so games at League Reserves level from 2009 to 2010, he joins two other old scholars, Peter Hoban and Sebastian Guilhaus who also debuted in 2010 for Woodville West Torrens as ruckmen. was a superb basketballer at school, whilst Sebastian was known as an outstanding athlete, especially in Triple and Long Jump. He started playing Football in Year 12. Sebastian won the Mail Medal in 2009 in the Southern League whilst playing for Morphettville Football Club.

Recently we learned of the sudden death of Gary Colmer, father of old scholars Daniel and David. Gary coached our 1st XV111 Football team in the local zone competition on Wednesday afternoons for many years and also spent at least 15 years coaching Sturt Juniors. He was a Club stalwart at Kenilworth Football Club and also at the Unley Cricket Club where he pursued his other passion, Cricket. Gary was instrumental in our 1st and 2nd XV111 move to Kenilworth Football Club, where he ensured our co-tenancy was smooth. Our sincere condolences are extended to his wife Teresa and to Daniel and David. My thanks to Alex Mead and Patrick Blenkinsop, 1st XV111 players and also members of the Kenilworth FC juniors who also attended a very large funeral at Centennial Park last Wednesday, testimony to the many people that knew and respected Garry. He will be sadly missed.

This week’s Basketball match against St Paul’s College produced some good results in most matches. New overseas recruit Arrigo Osti has settled in well and will return to the line up this week. The Open As under the leadership of Andrew Cameron and Lewis Einarson played well to win very comfortably.

Last Thursday’s Open A Soccer match against Brighton High produced a surprising loss for Mercedes, 4/3. Regardless of the loss, the team has qualified for the KO semi finals. The four serious injuries sustained during the match, however, ravaged the line up for the crucial match against St Peter’s College on Saturday in the SAAS Competition. A win would have meant finishing top of the league ladder. Great pressure was felt by the cohort who trudged to Saints on Saturday morning, which featured no Year 12 players in the line up at all. The first half saw some St Peter’s brilliance with 2 goals before a resurgent Mercedes run all over the struggling SPSC team in the 2nd half. Unfortunately only one of many opportunities could be put away and when the siren sounded it was a very relieved SPSC that congratulated our boys on a great game of Soccer. The previous week, many suggested that the first half against Sacred Heart College was the most brilliant 40 minutes of Soccer seen by Mercedes players, which resulted in a fine 3/1 win. Nicholas Davis’ captaincy is a key reason for this team’s great performances this season. This week they meet Blackfriars in a non Premiership points game before the long awaited Intercollegiate match against St Ignatius College at Waite Oval.

We invite all parents to contribute generously to the Intercol and look forward to players planning for punctuality and ensuring uniform to, during and after matches, are consistently immaculate.

8-12 Girls Sport ReportOn Thursday 22 July the 10A Netball team travelled to St Peter’s Girls to compete in the Knockout Netball Competition. The girls were feeling quietly confident as they boarded the bus.

Saints began the first quarter very strongly which caught the Mercedes girls by surprise. This enabled Saints to gain a considerable lead early on and they won the first quarter 15-5. After some reshuffling of positions and some defensive tactics from Miss Carol Guirguis, the team took the court for the second quarter with renewed confidence. Throughout this quarter the girls showed much improvement in the timing of leads in attack and the intercepts they were getting in defence and ended up losing the quarter 9-7. Unfortunately from this point on Saints began to dominate the game and despite glimpses of great teamwork when moving the ball down the court there were many turnovers as the team tired. This, coupled with a few missed goals, restricted the final score from being much closer. Saints ran out victors in the end with a score of 52-22. The girls were wonderful, respectful sportswomen and delightful to watch. The team consisted of the following girls: Alex Barker, Maddy Favilla, Tahlia Harvey, Georgia Hughes, Tiffany Jansons, Georgina Kokkotos, Mariah Kokkotos, Jessica Langford and Alice Martin.

On Monday 26 July the Open Girls Knockout Soccer team competed in their second round matches at Immanuel College. The first game that took place was against Marryatville High

School. The girls began strongly passing the ball between themselves and penetrating numerous times into attack. Unfortunately, a couple of lapses in defence saw Marryatville pounce upon the opportunity given to them and they managed to convert on both occasions. This did not put the girls off and they fought back determinedly but just could not find the back of the net. The final score was 2-0 Marryatville’s way.

The girls took a well earned break at this stage and began to focus on their next game which was against Immanuel College. It was an extremely physical game with both teams determined to triumph. Immanuel scored the first

goal with Mercedes replying quickly with an equaliser from Katherine Ebbs, unfortunately just before half time Immanuel scored a second goal. Despite several good saves from Miki McFayden in goals and some quick leads by Elisabeth Romeo up front Mercedes could not level the score before half time.

In the second half Immanuel came out determined to win and scored their third goal after about ten minutes. This was followed up by another goal a couple of minutes later to take the score to 4-1. Despite our girls fighting on valiantly they could not manage to get the ball in the back of the net again and the final score for the match was 6-1 to Immanuel College.

Congratulations go to the following girls on their magnificent performance: Tierney Barron, Gemma Burns, Simone Cameron,

Georgia Davey, Sarah DeGennaro, Katherine Ebbs, Margaret Kyprianou, Ruby Lambert, Melissa Lorenzetti, Miki McFayden, Ella Moloney, Eliza Moloney, Maddy Price, Jennifer Quirk, Elisabeth Romeo and Eliza Van Den Brink.

Whilst winter sport is fast coming to an end we are already busy organising teams, coaches and umpires for the Term 4 summer season. Training for the Senior Softball team and trials for the Junior teams will commence on Wednesday 25 August so that girls can be placed in appropriate teams and we shall also pick the 8/9 Knockout Softball Team at this stage. In addition to this coaches and umpires are being finalised for Basketball, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Water Polo. If there are any budding coaches or umpires for

these sports out there I would really appreciate hearing from you and subsequently including you as one of our wonderful team.

On a final note I would just like to congratulate Ellen Watson who has been selected in the SASI Training Squad for Basketball. In the second week of the June holidays Ellen attended a talent identification camp run by SASI. At the conclusion of the camp Ellen was awarded a position in All Star 5 team as well as making the SASI Training Squad.

Congratulations also to Jessica Stratfold and Jordan Samson who have been selected in the Open State Catholic Girls Netball Team. They will be competing in the Australasian Catholic Netball Championships to be held in Brisbane, Queensland, from Thursday 23 September to Friday 1 October.

Finally, I would like to congratulate Eleanor Wardleworth. Eleanor has been chosen as a Youth Sports Award 2010 Monthly Achiever in the category Eastern Girl. This monthly award puts her in the running for the Youth Sports Award with the Overall Winner to be determined later in the year. In recognition of her achievements she will receive a winner’s certificate at the Youth Sports Awards Presentation Evening on Wednesday 18 August at Next Generation Memorial Drive.

Cross Country Report Mercedes Cross Country runners created history in the Secondary School Sport SA 100km Schools’ Relay winning both the Junior and Senior Relays in the same year by a record margin. In the long history of this event only one other school, Aberfoyle Park High (1994) has matched the feat of winning both relays in the same year, but the combined winning margin of over 43 minutes was nearly 3 times the margin more than Aberfoyle Park’s excellent performance. The results were:Junior: 1st Mercedes College (Record), 2nd St Ignatius College, 3rd Pembroke College. This record breaking team included Damien Quick, Georgia Hughes, Charlotte Venn, Fergal Banks, Alexander Praschifka with pacers Lachlan Merrigan and Maddy Favilla. Congratulations to all team members on your record time and record winning margin of 28 minutes. Not to be outdone by the Juniors, the Seniors also did their part creating this history by winning their division by 15 minutes, again amazingly beating the same teams into 2nd and 3rd positions. This winning team included Luke Crocker, Harrison Hughes, Ruby Hume, Benjamin Tripodi, Eleanor Wardleworth with pacers Nicholas Davis and James Venn. Official results will be reported when received. Next week seven Mercedes College Cross Country runners will travel to Brisbane with the South Australian Schools’ Team to compete in the Australian Championships. Our representatives are Eleanor Wardleworth (Girls Captain), Harrison Hughes,

Alexander Praschifka, Charlotte Venn, Georgia Hughes, Alexandra Mason and Jack Favilla. All have been performing very well in leadup competitions and will be looking forward to strong performances in Brisbane.

On Wednesday 17 August sees Mercedes hold the ISSA Relay Championships which incorporate our Intercollegiate Challenge (versus St Ignatius College) at Waite commencing at 4:30pm. Aged divisions are Primary, Junior Secondary (Years 8 - 10) and Senior Secondary. It is in the Senior Division that the Intercollegiate Challenge will take place. While Mercedes are favoured to take out the Girls challenge the Boys race promised to be an extremely close tussle.

Junior Cross Country ReportThirty two students from Years 4 -7 represented Mercedes College with distinction at the Catholic Primary Schools Cross Country Championships on Thursday 5 August. This team was smaller than expected succumbing to various winter ailments. Led by state representatives Jack Favills (1st U13 Boys) and Alexandra Mason (2nd U13 Girls) our team performed very well. Intercollegiate SportsThe 6th annual Intercollegiate Competition between Mercedes and St Ignatius College will be held from Wednesday 18 August to Saturday 21 August 2010. The ongoing aim of this competition is to forge friendships and camaraderie between the two Colleges.

The following sports will be featured throughout the week across nine disciplines: Cross Country running, Table Tennis, Debating, Soccer, Chess, Football, Netball, Hockey and Basketball. The competition will begin with the Cross Country on Wednesday 18 August at Waite Oval, (cnr Fullarton Rd & Claremont Ave) commencing at 4:15pm. Hockey, Table Tennis and Debating will take place on Friday 20 August with the remaining events being conducted on Saturday 21 August.

The winning team at each Open grade fixture will be awarded a perpetual shield, with there being 20 shields in total. Additionally, each Mercedes player adjudged best on field in their respective Open level match will be presented with a medal at the conclusion of the match. The overall “Ignatius-Mercedes” Shield is presented at the conclusion of the 1st XVIII Football match which is played at Kingswood Oval, adjacent to Mitcham Girls High School.

While Middle School students do not compete for a shield, they do compete throughout the week in their respective sports, therefore involving all year levels within both Colleges, making the competition as inclusive as possible.

This is an exciting date in the College’s calendar and all students and parents are encouraged to attend and support those taking part throughout the week. The competition itself has been running since 2005 with the inaugural shield being a tie between the two Colleges. Mercedes then went on to win the shield in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with St Ignatius winning it outright for the first time last year.

2010 promises to be another very competitive year with all the players training hard and working towards their goal of winning the shield for their sport. Whilst this is an important event with students from both Colleges competing with an air of friendly rivalry, similarly they are expected to be a paragon of sportsmanship, humble in victory and gracious in defeat. These are seen as very important sporting values in our College and we encourage all to contribute and to provide generous support over the four days.
