1 Quality paint repair
a Preparation
Beside qualified and trained people, you need as well the right equipment and products to execute ahigh quality repair. Cleaning steps and the painting itself are equally important as tools, well-equippedworking places and the right paint system.
The basis of a high quality repair is a well-organized and clean working place. They can vary frombodyshop to bodyshop, but they should follow the same concept.
The right process will influence the end result. Therefore you shouldlook for short ways, that the tools are near by the object which has
to be repaired. A well-organized working place improves the efficiency of the working flow and the quality of the repair.
First rule: cleanness is most important.This applies to the working place, the working floor, the bodyshop, people and objects.Quality improvement systems will support to reach the optimum process.
All objects which are being repaired have to be cleaned before preparation and application of theapproved paint system and products. Use only high quality cleaning cloths and always use 2 cloths. Onecloth for the wet cleaning and the second cloth to wipe the surface dry again.
Substrates made of metal are “clean” when no colored contaminations are left on the cleaning cloth.Always use the correct PPE:
1. Because of health & safety along with personal protection.2. To avoid contamination and paint defect caused by contact by hand etc.
Work only with the approved paint systems which are recommended for each repair type.Don’t change any scripted process or product system; this will lead to a poor quality result.
b Tools
Tools and equipment play an important role beside the optimized working place and paint systems.Tools should be maintained and serviced at regular intervals as per the manufacturers’recommendations.
Sanding tools and dust extraction
It is necessary to use the right sanding tools in combination with an operational dust extraction system toreach a high quality result.Cars are manufactured using different types of substrates like plastics, aluminum, carbon fibre anddifferent strength metals. Make sure that you use the recommended systems according to the substrate.
Aluminum
A separate working place is needed for the repair and preparation of aluminum. Preparation of aluminumand steel substrates with the same tools will cause contact corrosion.Also take care that your working place is equipped with separate sanding tools and dust extraction.
Carbon (CFK)
Also use for these substrates different air-driven sanding tools and dust extraction.
All used sanding tools must be connected to the dust extraction at all time to enhance dust control. Byfollowing the recommended paint systems a high quality paint repair will be achieved.Ensure to follow the recommendation of the sanding tools manufacturer.
c Dry sanding
All sanding steps are recommended by dry sanding; therefore use the right tool and sanding paperaccording to the recommendation of the paint and abrasive manufacturer.
You will find all sanding grit recommendation written in the paint system.
Both parties (paint and abrasive manufacturer) are eager to optimize the process inside the bodyshop toachieve a constant high quality repair.
Choosing the right tool and sanding paper in proper coordination with each other, and also related to thesubstrate, will bring you to a high quality repair.
Dry sanding ensures an ecological and economical process.
d EP Filler
To reach an optimum corrosion protection special products based on different resins are needed.Products based on Epoxy resins for example.
Especially primers, surfacer and fillers are made of Epoxy when very good adhesion and resistanceagainst humidity, oil and solvent is required as per manufacturer guidelines.
Note:Use only the EP Filler based paint system, when seam sealing, windscreen bonding and underbodyprotection will be carried out.
EP resin based products such as primers are mainly used for restoring “Classic Cars”.

Color check
Check the color before by making spray-outs. Spray-outs have to be sprayed vertical. Youneed at least 5 spray cards. Apply non sanding filler according TDS.
Color sample
Mask the bottom of the spray cards withmasking tape. So that afterwards the filler coloris visible.
Apply the foundation color according TDS. Usesame spray gun, set-up and activators you willuse for the repair.
Apply again masking tape after drying. Seepicture.
Color sample
Mask all cards accept one. Apply 1 layer of theeffect color.
Remove the paper after flash-off, so that 2 cardsare visible. Apply again 1 layer of the effectcolor.(See picture above)
Remove again the paper, so that now 3 samplesare visible. Apply again 1 layer of the effectcolor.

After flash-off remove the paper. 4 samples arenow visible, apply again 1 layer.
Finally remove the complete masking paper (seepicture), apply the final layer of effect color. Aftercompletely dry and matt, apply the clearcoataccording TDS.
After complete drying of the clearcoat removethe masking tape and write on the back sidealways the numbers of layers which is on eachsample.
Color check
Check now the sample to your object andchoose the one which match best.

b Matt finishes, cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning andmaintenance
whenWhen a vehicle is freshly painted the paint film is at its most sensitive with respect to attack by chemical cleanerand the cleaning process. It is recommended that freshly painted vehicles be allowed a minimum of 7 daysbefore being subjected to any form of chemical cleaning process, ideally extended to 21 days.

Never use a car wash or any type of brush to wash/clean Matt Finishes!
Thoroughly rinse the vehicle with clean cold water preferably using a hose or a pressure washer to remove anyloose road traffic film and dust particles. The use of a high pressure steam washer is not recommended.
The vehicle can then be washed by using a PH neutral based soap and soft sponge to minimize the risk of anytype of abrasions. At all times avoid excessive rubbing of the paint surface as this could lead to the surface becoming glossier inappearance than other areas.
Rinse thoroughly with clean cold water preferably using a hose or a pressure washer. Allow the vehicle to drynaturally until only a few water drops are present on the surface. To remove the remaining water drops and toprevent any water marking dry gently using a soft chamois avoiding excessive rubbing of the paint surface.
Avoid washing the vehicle in direct sunlight and or when the vehicle surface temperature is excessive i.e. above25°C.
Any contamination found on the paint surface should be removed immediately i.e. bird lime or insects etc.Thoroughly soak the affected area with clean water preferably with a hose or high pressure washer to soften thecontaminated area and remove gently using a soft sponge an PH neutral soap. For difficult to removecontamination it may be necessary to use a solution designed specifically to remove insects etc found in car careshops. Care should be taken not to allow any type of solution to dry on the paint surface as this could damagethe surface even further. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on use.
maintanance
It is not possible to carry out any type of polishing or waxing to the Matt Finish. Polishing or waxing of the mattfinish will only lead to areas being left glossy due to the rubbing technique and abrasive compounds found inpolishing materials.
Regular washing is the only way possible to maintain the paint surface as describe above. Removecontamination as soon as it becomes visible using the method detailed above to prevent damage.
Particular care should also be taken when opening and closing doors, bonnet and boot lid as excessive rubbingaround handle areas will also lead to the area becoming glossy.
Please note that once an area becomes more glossy the only remedy is to repaint the affected area(s)

After flash-off remove the paper. 4 samples arenow visible, apply again 1 layer.
Finally remove the complete masking paper (seepicture), apply the final layer of effect color. Aftercompletely dry and matt, apply the clearcoataccording TDS.
After complete drying of the clearcoat removethe masking tape and write on the back sidealways the numbers of layers which is on eachsample.

Check the color before by making spray-outs. Spray-outs have to be sprayed vertical. Youneed at least 5 spray cards. Apply non sanding filler according TDS.
