00.04-36 Maintenance Fuel filter, replacing FUEL FILTER SERVICE Fuel filter, replacing The fuel filter is located underneath the vehicle, approximately under the right rear seat. Loosen fuel filler cap to release pressure in fuel tank. Raise vehicle and support safely. Working just ahead of right rear axle: • Insert 10 mm socket up through fuel filter assembly plastic splash shield access holes (arrows). • Remove 3 plastic nuts and lower splash shield. Place drip pan underneath fuel filter. Wear eye and hand protection and protective clothing in case of fuel spray. Models with 104 or 111 engine: • Pinch fuel lines shut using fuel line pinch clamps (MB special tool 000 589 40 37 00 or equivalent) to prevent fuel line drip. • Wrap a shop towel around each line before disconnecting from filter. Disconnect fuel hoses from filter. Be sure to counterhold filter using thin wrench. Discard copper sealing rings. • Loosen and remove fuel filter mounting screw. • Remove and drain filter thoroughly. Discard in environmentally responsible manner. WARNING • The fuel system retains pressure even when the ignition is OFF. • Before disconnecting a fuel hose, wrap a shop cloth around the hose to absorb any leaking fuel. Loosen fuel lines slowly to allow residual fuel pressure to dissipate. Avoid spraying fuel. • Place a drain pan underneath the work area to collect spilling fuel. • Before beginning work on the fuel system, place a fire extinguisher in the vicinity of the work area. • Fuel is highly flammable. When working around fuel, do not disconnect wires that could cause electrical sparks. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. • Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid injuries from contact with fuel. Unscrew the fuel tank cap to release pressure in the tank before working on fuel lines. • Do not use a work light with an incandescent bulb near fuel. Fuel may spray on the hot bulb, causing a fire. • Make sure the work area is properly ventilated. WARNING • Make sure the vehicle is stable and well supported at all times. Use a professional automotive lift or jack stands. CAUTION• Clean thoroughly around the filter connections before removing.

FUEL FILTER SERVICE

Fuel filter, replacing

The fuel filter is located underneath the vehicle, approximately under the right rear seat.

– Loosen fuel filler cap to release pressure in fuel tank.

– Raise vehicle and support safely.

Working just ahead of right rear axle:

• Insert 10 mm socket up through fuel filter assembly plastic splash shield access holes (arrows).

Models with 104 or 111 engine:

Models with 112 engine:

Models with 112 engine:

• Use fuel line pinch clamps (MB special tool 000 589 40 37 00 or equivalent) to prevent fuel line drip.

• Cut or loosen fuel line clamps (A).

• Wrap a shop towel around each line before detaching from filter.

• Loosen and remove fuel filter mounting screw (B).

• Remove and drain filter thoroughly. Discard in environmentally responsible manner.

– When installing new filter:

• Where applicable, make sure plastic protective sleeve is between fuel filter body and support bracket.

• Do not mix up fuel lines.

• 104 or 111 engine: Attach fuel lines using new copper sealing rings. Counterhold filter using thin wrenches.

• 112 engine: Use new fuel line clamps.

– After assembly but prior to reinstalling splash shield:

• Remove fuel line pinch clamp(s).

• Wipe spilled fuel off underbody protection.

• Start and run engine briefly and check filter connections carefully for leaks.

CAUTION—• Clean thoroughly around the filter connections before removing

them.
