Exclusive Interviews

Miss Salwa, an English tutor here at PTEM who is also the founder of Silhouette, was interviewed by the Student Magazine. According to Miss Salwa, Silhouette originally came about from the themes that were present in each of the songs and poems which had something to do with you being in the shadow, feeling lonely or rejected. It is everything to do with feeling the downside of life or in the shadows of someone else or even of your own ego.

A piece of advice from her to those who are insecure about their talents; always believe that the talent is yours and everything that we have comes from Allah, it doesn’t matter which level you are; amateur or professional. What is important is that you are sharing something good with people out there. Don’t be afraid and just go for it, you don’t know until you try. Discipline and sincerity are also very important.

When asked about performing in front of a live audience, the cast all agreed that it was nerve-wrecking but at the same time very exciting because they were all together. One of the performers, Wafiy Norhalim, commented that they were ecstatic to show their talents and they did it superbly!

Some of the Student Magazine Committee interviewed the cast of Silhouette.

Q. Who came up with the Malay songs? A. Miss Salwa: Initially it was a Kampong Ayer song, I reminded them of the notion `jangan lupa asal usul ketani’ (don’t forget our tradition) and then Naqib came up with the idea to go and visit Kampong Ayer to get inspiration and we actually booked one day to go but we didn’t. Then that one day, I remembered Sri, Bella and Eqah were just singing random Malay children songs like `Oh, kanak-kanak’ and such. By then, I found out these would be good to add in the performance.

Q. When asked if they were planning to do something like this in the future? A.Miss Salwa: Yeah we are, because two years ago when I did it with the musicians and ‘The Forbidden’ another interpretive performance before Silhouette, we were just testing the water, trying to give a new breath to stage performances and presenting poetry on stage with music and dances as well but, then we realised that the response from the public was quite good and they wanted more. I actually decided, sat down and said “Okay, we should do a much better and bigger one that really focuses on poetry and music alone. So with the silhouette we got rid of the dance and just focuses on those 2 genres and it did work with these superb people.

Q.Between the two performances in Orchid Garden Hotel and the Multi Purpose Hall, which one is preferable/better? A. Wafiy: For me, I would actually pick Orchid Garden Hotel because my parents were there. I never did this kind of thing before and seeing my mother tear up was something. On that night it was amazing to sing for her.

24 JANUARY 2013, Thursday. A total of 21 students and 5 tutors from PTEM’s Art & Design crew departed Brunei for an art trip to

Singapore. This trip, which lasted three days, was filled with a

whole lot of different activities for the students to experience art outside of Brunei; helping them prepare for their ‘A’ Level Art &

Design exam. These activities included a workshop with Australian artist: Astrid Dahl, sketching and drawing sessions at ‘Gardens by

the Bay’, visiting the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), observing Singapore’s architectural

landmarks, tour to bookstore ‘Kinokuya’ and

‘Artfriend’ for art materials and stationery, attending Lego & photography exhibitions at

Art Science Museum and the main reason for the trip, the Art Stage Singapore Exhibition.

This annual art fair exhibits a variety of art-

works by artists from all over the world, fo-cusing on the Southeast Asian art with the

theme ‘We Are Asia.’ for year 2013. Every-one had a great time and arrived back in Brunei on 27th January

2013, inspired to wow.

There has been a PTEM student magazine

since the school first opened at the Berakas campus back in 2006. The magazine is

written, designed and printed by students,

for students. A lot of effort goes in to each publication and this issue is no exception.

Renamed Meraxcellence, the magazine also has a new crew of writers and editors.. We

would like to take this chance to thank Shazana Hamiroldzam (magazine name) and

Aiman Bin Rosli (logo) for their winning

entries to rebrand our magazine. While each issue will eventually become available online,

we strongly encourage everyone to spend a few cents and purchase a paper copy of the

magazine. Share it with your family and

friends; an excellent record of our experiences here at PTEM.
