Dear Friends,

I am delighted that you are able to join me to celebrate Australia Day 2011 in the presence of a group of individuals who have distinguished themselves by their active community service.

It was to honour the contributions of such people that I inaugurated the awards in 1995.

The privileges of belonging to this wonderful country should evoke both our gratitude and pride in what we are achieving as a nation. Similarly, these privileges should stir our sense of responsibility for less fortunate fellow citizens; to protect our fragile environment and to support the values that have helped to shape us as a fortunate nation.

Both internationally and domestically, we live in difficult times; therefore it is important we demonstrate our strong unity and mutual respect for one another by standing up for our nation’s independence.

Yours sincerely,

The Hon Kevin Andrews MPFederal Member for Menzies
