MENZA e-news 14 Sept 2012 Tena Koutou Katoa I have been enjoying going back into the latest Sound Arts magazine, a great read. Thank you to Stephanie Lees for picking up the editorship role while our usually indefatigable leader Celia Stewart completes post grad work. Most important in these notes is your Annual General Meeting on Friday October 5 th , 5pm at the Comfort Hotel, Wellington. The meeting has been strategically placed to encourage the conference delegates to attend, and we hope other members will get there. We promise you a ‘short-ish’ AGM! In 2013 Millie Locke, Maria Winder (Secretary) and Stephanie Lees (Treasurer) are stepping down. In straight terms, these are incredibly serious leadership losses to your MENZA community, even though we know these people will be supportive from outside the board as best they can. In short, we need you to help locate able replacements (See Page 11: Thought of Being a board member?). Celia Stewart and I are putting our names forward for a further 3 year term, and the remaining members are mid-point of the three year elected cycle. Your board has been very active. In this E-news there is a strategic plan discussion document for MENZA, in draft form of course. This has come as a result of many hours of deliberation by board members. What are our roots and how do we build stronger connections with all who teach music in some way in any context? There has also been much board member activity and leadership in assisting the TRCC mount Keeping up with the Play, October 3-5. Mary Horner has done a great job! Millie Locke has been working hard for the success of the Tuituia conference coming up in January. Finally, the board has already begun planning the 2013 Hook Line and Singalong and the MENZA National Professional Learning and Development Day in New Zealand Music Month (10 May). To close, I took the opportunity this week to talk to the review panel of the College of Education at Otago. I had gather comments from local principals and was heartened by their recognition that recent changes to teacher education mean that students are less able to cope and be independent across the curriculum, outside mathematics and English. Be heartened, I think that there is great deal of support out there for Colleges of Education to reconsider the place of curriculum in pre-service training. Join the fray! I have been enjoying going back into the latest Sound Arts magazine, a great read. Thank you to Stephanie Lees for picking up the editorship role while our usually indefatigable leader Celia Stewart completes post grad work. Most important in these notes is your Annual General Meeting on Friday October 5th, 5pm at the Comfort Hotel, Wellington. MENZA –

Future Strategy Discussion Document

MENZA is a national body.

Its core role is for the benefits of ECE, primary, secondary and tertiary teachers with an interest in music education. It is also the national professional organisation and therefore open to all with an interest in music education.

As a professional body MENZA needs to project professionalism and quality befitting of a professional organisation.

MENZA delivers value and support to teachers through:

• Opportunities to connect as music education professionals • The distribution and support of innovation in practise and

research • The fostering of opportunities for on-going professional

development • The delivery of a small number of national scale, high value

initiatives.

MENZA encourages regional partners and related professional organisations to contribute to the professional development of music educators.

Strategy continued …

Key Initiatives

Annual programme and new subscriptions to be in place and advertised by November .

1. Build the Conference • the conference as annual (or bi-annual). • Explore relationships with universities – they take the financial risk • Partner with regions and share the risk • Establish mutually beneficial relationship with the music trade – package of sponsorship, advertising and

trade display that is linked to the magazine & website + possible presentation

2. National Music PDL Day (11 May this year , 10 MAY 2013) • Plan, schedule, liaison with regional providers and share risks with clear guidelines for roles and

responsibilities • Explore early childhood + primary + secondary elements

3. Magazine

• Increase circulation

by:

o Increasing proportion/regularity of e-news type publication o Distilled versions (say 2 pages of snippets) distributed on line to all schools o Build interest by having writers consider further development of content as resource packages in

tune me in where appropriate • Link to advertising and sponsorship package for conference

4. Re-work subscription / membership package • Focus on institutional membership – esp. secondary schools • Possible subscription for Primary School covers all teachers & one person to attend the national PD

Day • Possible subscription for Secondary School that covers all music teachers & itinerants working in the

school • Explore development of subscription packages and test them with groups of members. It needs to raise

enough revenue and to be attractive to schools and maximise the circulation of the magazine and opportunities for advertising

• To spread membership base, consider financial implications of the table on the next page… • The board favours more regional representation.

5. Annual Programme and new subscriptions need to be in the market by AGM or at least by November

SOUND ARTS – JUNE 2012 EDITION was MENZA’s first ever e-journal.

As acting editor it was a challenge to make sure all the e-links worked. After 8 proofs I was very happy that this is a good format to have in the mix. The main advantage being the e- links as well as the increased length possible at the same time as reduced cost.

It became apparent in July that access wasn’t quite as easy as we’d hoped – a great number of people who were not MENZA members had subscribed to the Tune ME In website as users (twice as many as actual members!) and their names had to be cross checked against the current membership list so the free riders didn’t get access… Unfortunately I was on holiday much of July so this didn’t happen ‘til later.

A larger number of members still need to become “registered users” on the website – hope what follows will make it easier …

[Street Addres [City], [State][Po

How to access “SOUND ARTS” MAG – for MENZA members only on TUNE ME IN

STEP 1: Open a web browser like Explorer, Safari or Firefox …enter www.tunemein.co.nz and the home page should appear – to the right hand side you will see this box as below . If this is your first time trying to gain access t“member only pages” – that is SOUND ARTS mag you must click the REGISTER button here !

7 MENZA SEPTEMBER 2012 e-NEWS

STEP 2: Clicking REGISTER will take you through to this page below:

Fill this page in. Then click the REGISTER button…

(you don’t need to upload a photo –the boxes with asterix * will do)

STEP 3:

There will be a delay at this point because the MENZA admin need to go into the site to make you a ‘subscriber user’ with access to the member pages… email [email protected] &/or [email protected] at this point to ensure this happens promptly. And they’ll let you know you are ready to go.

You can then go back and use the LOG IN function on the front page – and SOUND ARTS will appear on the menu bar and away you go …

11 MENZA SEPTEMBER 2012 e-NEWS

Being a Board Member - Have you thought of joining the MENZA board? We want you consider the idea too! Some things you ought to know before allowing your name to be put forward (with a seconder)…

We hope you are a network type person and have a positive approach for establishing and working toward agreed goals. Everybody on the board needs to focus their expertise for the benefit of members and agreed plans of action. They are diverse.

On average, the board commands several hours a week of your energy and skills. We meet face-to-face twice or three times for a Saturday during the year, sometimes Friday night (dependent on conference activity). We stay in touch through group emails, often through focus working groups. We meet on Skype in those months that there is no live meeting, except January (usually…!). When there are face-to-face meetings you will be funded for flights, (but we do our own accommodation and expenses if we want to stay on in Wellington). We encourage a of split flight costs with your local region group, and in return, we hope that you will maintain, or increase, your regional networking.

Some anticipated “will”s.

• Your nomination means you will endeavour to enjoy the possibilities and new directions of music education; taking a holistic stance.

• You will work to appreciate the needs of every sector, ECE, primary, secondary and tertiary. Once on the board, your particular skills will be welcomed. We don’t have resources for much on the job training but there is a mass of encouragement.

• As a member, you will have an area of responsibility. This might involve a sector, technology and website, writing for publication and coordination of others’ writing, publicity and advocacy writing, conference experience, financial understanding and expertise, an interest in links with ISME or our research partner MERC, and networking with professional music/education groups around New Zealand.

• You will be a key person in promoting Hook Line and Sing-along as well as the National PD day in your region.

But wait there is more!

• You will help create a wonderful team feeling. The activity of the MENZA seems to bring out amazing qualities in people, and the voluntary commitment of individuals is extraordinary. Your return is greater pleasure in that red wine on a Sunday night, or your work with a Year 1 or 9 class takes on hugely greater meaning. Why? Because you are constantly being challenged to think about what is real, possible and the future of learners’ musical growth in Aotearoa New Zealand. What a privilege to be part of this group!

If not you, then who? (Nomination forms are on the webstie under “news”/ email [email protected] )
