Coburn, Vice President for Student Affairs March 2015 Mental Health & Emergency Services The Division of Student Affairs provides a variety of mental health and crisis services to assist students in need. Unfortunately, in recent years the frequency of student crises and emergencies has been on the rise. University Counseling Center e University Counseling Center’s (UCC) primary mission is to address the psychological needs and personal concerns that may impact students’ academic progress, social development, and emotional well-being. In December 2014, the UCC implemented a new aſter-hours hotline to provide students immediate access to a counselor in an emergency. Academic ImpedimentsUniversity Health Services collaborates with the Florida Center for Prevention Research to administer the National Collegiate Health Assessment. A section of the findings reveals factors that negatively affected students’ academic progress.

Newest Strategies to Promote Health & Address Needs In response to students’ increasing mental health needs, the Divisions of Student Affairs has implemented a number of strategies to provide more effective and efficient services. These include:

• Creation of a 1st 50 Days Program to connect new students with opportunities for involvement and campus support resources.

• Implementation of MDLIVE, a telephone triage service to connect students with a medical professional after regular business hours.

• Launch of ProtoCall, an after-hours service to provide students immediate access to a mental health counselor.

• New walk-in system where students can come to the UCC and be seen without a long delay.

Student Crises The number of student crises has risen in recent years. The Florida Mental Health Act (Baker Act) provides emergency services and places sudents in temporary custody for mental health evaluation and treatment. The Florida Substance Abuse Impairment Act (Marchman Act) provides emergency services for substance abuse assesment and stabilization.
