Mental/Emotional Health-
- the ability to accept yourself and others
- adapt to and cope with emotions - deal with the problems and challenges
you meet in life.
Indicators of positive Mental/Emotional Health:
Do not copy
Do you see yourself and life (in general)in positive ways?
Do you face life challenges with confidence? Do you accept that things will not always go your way? Do you motivate yourself to achieve goals? Do you understand and cope with feelings? Do you focus on your strengths? Do you accept constructive criticism and learn from
your mistakes? Do you have a healthy sense of humor? Do you bounce back from disappointment?
Self Concept –
-the way you see yourself.
Self-Esteem-
the way you feel about yourself.
Types of Mental Health Problems
Mental Illness-
A disorder that affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety Disorder –
A condition in which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally.
Types of anxiety disorders:
General Anxiety worries about a lot of things
Obsessive Compulsive Disorderbad thoughts followed by a ritual/routine to relieve the anxiety
Phobias strong irrational fear reactions
Social Phobias Extreme shyness & self consciousness
Panic AttacksSpontaneous panic attacks
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderHigh stress and symptoms develop after a traumatic event
Personality Disorder – A variety of psychological conditions that affect a person’s ability to get along with others.
Personality Disorders
Schizophrenia – an illness that harms how your brain works and how you think.
People who have schizophrenia
Hear and sometimes see things that are not there (hallucinations)
Believe some things that are not true (delusions)
Think that some people are trying to harm them (paranoia).

Impulse Control Disorder- A disorder characterized by a failure to resist an impulse,
drive, or temptation to perform an act that is harmful to the person or to others.
Examples: Compulsive gambling
Compulsive shopping
Pyromania
Mood Disorder – A disorder in which a person has extreme uncontrollable mood changes.

Mood Disorders
Bipolar Disorder(Manic-Depressive)-
A condition that causes extreme shifts in mood. People may spend weeks feeling like they're on top of the world before plunging into depression.
Clinical Depression –A mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything.
Every year 5% of teens experience clinical depression. This can lead to alcohol and drug use and the desire to harm themselves.
Eating Disorder -
An extreme, harmful eating behavior that can cause serious illness or even death
Types of eating disorders
Anorexia Nervosa:
The irrational fear of becoming obese results in severe weight loss from self-imposed starvation.
Bulimia Nervosa:Purging or clearing of the digestive tract
follows cycles of overeating.
