2017 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY WOLFPACK MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

This should be the “coming of age” year for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball program. After transitioning following the graduation of Brad Gunter and having head coach Pat Hennelly on a one year sabbatical, the core of the WolfPack have moved into the ‘mature’ status as most players go into their third or fourth years.

Hennelly is back and has bolstered his line up with two veterans. German native Tim Dobbert joins the program after spending the last two seasons with NCAA Division I powerhouse Brigham Young University. Former University of Regina Cougar setter Alex Cassels (East St. Paul, MB) has decided to finish his university eligibility out at TRU after attending the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, BC (PACWEST) the last two years. He will be reunited with former club and Team Manitoba teammate Randy Grundmann (Winnipeg, MB).

Cassels, Grundmann and middle Jordan Foot (Prince George, BC) are the ‘Pack’s fifth year players this year.

USPORTS Academic All Canadians Cole Keddie (4th year, Edmonton, AB) , Kyle Behiels (3rd year,Edmonton, AB) and

Tim Edge (4th year, Langley, BC) have returned. Keddie has been an Academic All Canadian every year he has been at TRU.

Joining them are middle Sam Taylor Parks (3rd year, Kelowna, BC) and outside Charlie Bringloe (3rd year, Waterloo, ON) who are the other core members of the WolfPack.

One player who came into his own in the second half of the season was Australian import Anton Napolitano (2nd year, Victoria, AUS). Joshua Mullaney (3rd year, Calgary, AB), Cole Hanson (2nd year, Kelowna, BC) Isaac Smit (4th year, Kelowna, BC) and Keel Haldane (2nd year, Terrace,BC) provide insurance off the bench.

The WolfPack’s key high school recruit was libero Landon Currie of Vernon, BC.

Men’s volleyball kicked off their regular season on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday, October 20th. A highlight of the season will be an exhibition tour in Hawaii in February, 2018.

PAT HENNELLY HEAD COACH Under Hennelly’s direction, the men’s volleyball team has been to the CIS Nationals three times, winning a Bronze medal in 2008 and three Canada West bronzes in 2008, 2009, and 2014. The team has also been in the CIS Top Ten coaches’ poll for eight of the last nine seasons, reaching as high as fourth place in 2013-14.

Known as a shrewd judge of talent, Hennelly has recruited some of the top players from not only Canada, but Denmark, the United States, Egypt, Monaco, Turkey, and France. He has an extensive coaching background, having coached in Northern Arizona (NCAA Division 1) and as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs at UBC.

Hennelly is very involved in the Volleyball BC program. He holds two Bachelor Degrees from UBC, one in human kinetics and the other in education. He also holds a NCCP Level III coaching certificate.

He is married to Heidi and they have a daughter Tosca and twins Mika and Kaija.

To help relax from the rigors of coaching CIS volleyball, Pat is an avid gardener and makes a mean chili dish.

CAMERON SECRET ASSISTANT COACHCameronis into his first year as an assistant. He is a teacher by trade. He has coached varsity boys and youth programs in Kenya, China and in Belgium.  As a player, Cameron played pro for three years for VBC Guibertin in Belgium. He also was a member of the UBC Thunderbirds from 1998-2001 and the Douglas College Royals from 1994-97.  Cameron enjoys reading, traveling, writing, photography, tennis and camping.  Cameron’s coaching philosophy is pretty simple - hard work leads to improvement. All players have the ability to improve all facets of their game, but they need to be willing to put in the time and effort. Having said that, coaches need to know their players as individuals, figure out what makes them tick, and then use that understanding to maximize a player’s ability. “I can be a tough coach when required, and can be more of a mentor (if that is what’s needed). This year’s WolfPack squad is big and physical, and I am looking forward to competing in a very tough league. “

KEN LAVEN ASSISTANT COACHKen is into his second year as an assistant coach. He played CIAU volleyball for the UBC Thunderbirds in the early 1980’s and was a member of the 1986 National Senior Men’s Club championship team. He has completed the NCCP Level I and II coaching certification programs. He coached high school “AAA” senior boys and “AAA” senior girls’ volleyball in Surrey for five years a piece. He also coached two years of U16 and U17 girls’ club volleyball and led his senior boys’ high school team to the 2009 Provincial “AAA” championship. He is a lumber exporter/broker by trade. Ken and his wife Lisa have three children. Ken sees the team with tremendous potential this season and feels they will surprise a lot of people. Ken played university volleyball at UBC.

ROBIN SCHOEBEL ASSISTANT COACHRobin is one of the greatest players to have ever worn a WolfPack volleyball uniform (2006-2010). This is his first year as an assistant coach. As a player, he was a member of the CIS and Canada West all-rookie team. Robin was a member of the National Training center and played for Cannes in France. He is engaged to former WolfPack soccer player Carrie Sutcliffe. He enjoys walking their dogs and weight lifting. He looks at this season as a big one with a lot of key returning players who all have the potential and to take the team far in the Canada West. Robin works at New Gold, a multinational mining company.

Jakob spent the summer traveling throughout Europe. He played for Team Alberta U17 in 2015. Jakob played competitive basketball for the Cochrane Kodiaks from age 8-12. His greatest sports moment was winning against Mount Royal last year and getting the ‘Leader of the Pack” player of the match. His fondest sports moment came when he was playing club volleyball (U16) and after losing in the national final, his parents came to hug him. What his teammates don’t know about Jakob is that he had a huge head as a baby and was 12 pounds when he was born. Jeremy Wilcox (starting setter on Canada’s national team for a decade before retiring in 2012) is his biggest influence because in his words, “He achieved great things in the sport that he loved and always worked hard for it. Also, he has always been a great role model in my life due to his tremendous amount of adversity. He continued to persevere until he reached his goals. He helped me with my setting the last three years.” Jakob played club volleyball with Parker Siroiska (Calgary), Kyle Hall (Calgary) and Maddux Greves (Trinity) and was on the provincial team with Kyle Hinchey (UBCO). Jakob’s favorite movie is “Across the Universe” with George Clooney being his favorite actor. He likes being a WolfPack athlete because they participate a lot in the community, get lots of support from the public and it’s a great atmosphere for student athletes. In his spare time, Jakob likes to hike.

Coach Hennelly says:” I am looking forward to coaching Jakob this year, his second in the program. Jakob has a great touch on the ball and an excellent release for a setter. We are looking for Jakob to continue where he left off last year, running the offense for the WolfPack.”

His hobbies include hiking, listening to music and podcasts. “The Prestige” is his favorite movie with Jim Carrey being his favorite actor. His dream job would be as a helicopter pilot. Keel enjoys the music of Odeza. What Keel likes most about being a WolfPack athlete is representing the university while getting an education. He also loves being with his teammates. Keel’s favorite community event is “Raise a Reader” because he likes waking up early and helping his team ask for money for literacy programs. His words of advice for incoming athletes is, “ Have fun your next four or five years here and enjoy working hard.”

Coach Hennelly says:” Keel has come back for his 3rd year in excellent shape. Keel brings defensive intensity and a solid serve to the program. We are looking for Keel to continue to develop his passing and attacking skills“.

13 JOSHUA MULLANEYCalgary, AB (Centennial High School)6’7” Outside Hitter3rd year (Business)20 years old Parent’s names: Jessica Ireland & Dave Mullaney

Josh appeared in three matches and nine sets last year, with six kills. His rookie campaign he appeared in 13 matches and 21 sets with five kills, seven digs and three block assists. For the second year in a row, he joined the Pursuit volley club team and medaled at a club tournament in Florida. Teammate Charlie Bringloe was on that club as well. When asked what his favorite movie is, Josh states: “This is a tricky one because I’d have to go with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but obviously that isn’t a singular movie. And I couldn’t say only one of them is my favorite, maybe if I could choose the entire trilogy, obviously referring to the extended edition. I mean if you don’t watch the extended edition you’re just wasting 10 hours of your life instead of really enjoying a 15-hour saga of glory and honoring the vision that Peter Jackson worked to create. I also can’t state more clearly that the The Hobbit was NOT Peter Jacksons vision, I would hardly consider The Hobbit an extension to the GREATEST trilogy ever to be conceived. So in short I would either say Good Will Hunting, or the Notebook (I mean Ryan Gosling am I right?)”. Josh’s hobbies include cooking, hiking, napping, youga, meditation, reading, napping and singing (yes he likes to nap). If you see him at karaoke he will be singing a duet with either teammate Kyle Taylor or Charlie Bringloe and they would be doing “A Whole New World” or “Wannabe” by the Spice girls.

Coach Hennelly says:” Josh has been a pleasant surprise last spring and so far this year. Josh is starting to put it all together and become a well-rounded outside hitter. Josh is another athlete who has changed positions (opposite in high school) and the hard work over the past two years is starting to show. Josh worked out very hard this summer and it showed immediately improving in all aspects of the fitness testing. Josh adds depth to this great group of outside hitters and we expect he is another player who will be hard to keep off the floor.”

12 KYLE TAYLORCalgary, Alberta (Centennial High)5’11” Libero1st year (Science)19 years old Parents’ names: Susan & Jason

Kyle red shirted last season. He was his high schools MVP (2010-12) and won the Al Taylor Student Athlete award in 2012. Kyle played hockey until grade 11. He played school and club volleyball with WolfPack teammate Josh Mullaney and Mount Royal’s Mathew Sally. Kyle lists his hobbies as hiking, spending time with his dog Bentley and gaming. He loves country music and Tim McGraw is his favorite singer. His coach Meghan Mann at Centennial High is his biggest influence for believing in him and brought out the best of his game. Kyle’s dream job would be an NHL Player. “Miracle” is his favorite movie, with Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis being his favorite actor/actress. His favorite team moment as a member of the WolfPack was the team’s white water rafting trip last fall.

Coach Hennelly says:”KT is another athlete who paid the price this summer and came into the start of the season in excellent shape. Kyle is looking to establish himself as a libero and compete for court time.”

Coach Hennelly says:”Sam is coming off two solid years of playing time and has developed into a leader in this program. Sam is another athlete who worked out hard this summer and it has shown in the fitness testing and increased velocity in his attacking. Sam is one of the top middles in the league and will be a force at the net for the WolfPack.”

20 LANDON CURRIEVernon, BC ( Clarence Fulton Secondary)5’9” Libero1st year (Business)18 years old Parent’s names: Jamie & Dan

Landon committed to the WolfPack in November, 2016. He played three years for Team BC and was an all-star at high school tournaments hosted by TRU and UBC. If Landon could play for another WolfPack varsity team it would be baseball because he played growing up and still loves it. He played ten years of hockey, basketball for five years and rugby for two. His greatest sports moment came when he helped his team beat Team USA at the Latin America Baseball Classic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2016. His fondest sports moment came in grade nine when he played alongside his brother Kristian at volleyball provincials with his father coaching. Landon can speak Spanish fairly well. “Step Brothers” is his favorite movie with Will Ferrell being his favorite actor. If Landon had a super power it would be the ability to teleport and he would be known as the “Asian Invasion”. If you see him out at Karaoke, Landon would likely be singing “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The three items he would take to a desert island would be: coffee, court shoes and a memory foam pillow.

Coach Hennelly says: “Our only high school recruit this year, Landon has shown he can compete with the older athletes. Landon is coming off a summer spent with Team BC at the Canada Games and has been impressive. Landon is an intense and passionate player and already plays excellent defense. We are looking for Landon to improve technically and learn the ins and outs of being a USPORTS athlete.”

17 TIM EDGELangley, BC (Pacific Academy)6’5” Outside Hitter4th year (Science)21 years old Parent’s names: Tracy & Eric

After two injury plagued seasons, Tim got into the lineup on a regular basis as he played in 61 sets in 19 matches he dressed for. His hobbies are playing the guitar, cooking and computers. He wears his favorite number and blue is his favorite colour. Tim spent this summer working with youngsters at the Eureka Science Camp. He says the best part of being a WolfPack athlete is the community involvement and the family environment. His favorite visiting gym is Trinity Western because it’s in his hometown. The teams “Adopt a School” program is his favorite community initiative because he really gets to know the children.

Coach Hennelly says:”Tim is coming into his 4th year after getting some serious court time last year. Tim brings a heavy arm into serving and attacking and has developed into a great leader in our program. Last year Tim also improved in the class room becoming an Academic All Canadian. “
