• Why Use Visuals?− Jesus, the greatest teacher of all time, used visual
aids. • When questioned about paying tribute to Caesar, He
asked for a coin. Mark 12:13-17Mark 12:13-17• He used the widow's mites to teach a lesson on
giving. Mark 12:41-44Mark 12:41-44• When a discussion arose among His disciples as to
who was the greatest in the kingdom, He set a little child in their mist to teach them a lesson. Matt. Matt. 18:1-618:1-6
• The cursing of the fig tree provided an impressive visual for Jesus to teach His lesson on the importance of being fruitful. Matt. 21:17-22Matt. 21:17-22
• To teach humility Jesus used the visual of washing His disciples' feet. John 13:1-17John 13:1-17
• It helps listeners from becoming forgetful hearers – James 1:25James 1:25
− If Jesus used visual aids, surely we should use them to be more effective teachers.

• With the modern technology we as Bible class teachers and Gospel Preachers have today, we have a wider array of means and methods of teaching God’s Word in a clearer, more lasting way than in times past.−BUT,
• It is essential to note that with all this modern technology we may become some enthralled with the presentation that we lose sight of the message that is being taught.
• It can also become over-kill.• It can be distracting – thus the good use of
visual aids is required by the speaker.

• DEVELOPMENT OF VISUAL AIDS THROUGH THE YEARS.− The Chalkboard.
• Advantages. −One can write down (thus enabling his
audience to see) his points as he teaches.−Excellent for writing down answers from
students (thus, class participation).• Disadvantages.
−It is very difficult to speak and write (spell correctly, write neatly) all at the same time.
−Chalkboards are usually far to small. Thus, one is very limited in his visual.
−Too much time writing, will cause one to loose the attention of his audience.

• DEVELOPMENT OF VISUAL AIDS THROUGH THE YEARS.− The Use of Sheet Charts.
• Advantages.− They have the advantage of having everything
already written out.− With a proper stand, several charts can be
used.• Disadvantages.
− It always gives every point as soon as it is display (not like an overhead where portions can be uncovered or unit turned off).
− It takes endless hours to prepare them; i.e., at least a full day (whereas preparing a transparency by computer may take only a few minutes).
− Some artistic ability is necessary.

• DEVELOPMENT OF VISUAL AIDS THROUGH THE YEARS.− Utilizing Slides and Slide-projectors.
• Advantages.− Slides can be prepared ahead of time.− The entire N.T. can be purchased on slides.
• Disadvantages.− It takes good camera knowledge to be effective.− Again, it is very time consuming and also
expensive.− Utilizing Flannel board.
• Advantages.− This has the advantage of having words and
phrases already prepared.− It works well in small classrooms where pupils
can easy see small charts, maps, pictures, etc.• Disadvantages.
− The flannel board equipment is elaborate and hard to transport.
− Like sheet charts, it takes much time-consuming work to prepare the displays

• DEVELOPMENT OF VISUAL AIDS THROUGH THE YEARS.− Overhead projectors.
• Advantages. They have all the advantages of those mentioned above and more.− A great variety of things can be used, i.e.,
charts, maps, pictures.− They can be projected at just the right size for
the viewing audience.− Any portion or all of chart can be injected at the
right moment in the lesson.− Charts can be copied from a book and made into
a transparency in a matter of minutes.− Charts can be made by a computer in a matter
of minutes.• Disadvantages.
− They can be over used and one's lesson can become more like watching a movie than hearing a sermon.

• Principles of Chart Usage!−Never use a chart that you have to tell
people what it says.• Type to small.• Color schemes set to wrong colors and
backgrounds.
−Never use a chart that is so complex that you need Albert Einstein to explain it.• Make the points clear and easily recognizable.
−Vary the make-up of your charts and slides.• It is easy to fall prey to simple charts that
become boring.

• Principles of Chart Usage!−Use color for attention and impact.
• Different colors set different moods:−RED – speaks of danger−Blue – reflects calm and peace ect.
• Even if you don’t use a presentation program you can still use colors:
−Color printers to print maps ect.−Color Transparencies−Color photos and Whiteboards – color pens.
−Use of Free clipart and Images.• www.google.com and www.yahoo.com both have
image search bars – but be sure to set the filters on strict.

• Principles of Chart Usage!− Do your very best.
• Never present a chart that you have to apologize for.
• Never present a chart that you feel ashamed of.− This means:
• Nothing sloppy – could it be perceived that a first grader could have done it.
• Never give anything other than your best effort.
• Remember the most important aspect of your visual aid is to make your message of God’s Word more memorable, clear and understandable.− Charts are to be used to highlight your lesson – not
your lesson to showcase your charts.− People need to go away remembering what you have
preached or taught.
